nfluence of paradoxical sleep deprivation and sleep recovery on testosterone level in rats of different ages

This study was performed to assess serum testosterone alterations induced by paradoxical sleep deprivation （PSD） and to verify their attenuation during sleep recovery （SR） based on different durations and ages. Wistar male rats aged 12 weeks for the younger group and 20 weeks for the elder group were randomly distributed into one of the following groups： a control group （cage and platform）, 3-day SD, 5-day SD, 7-day SD, 1-day SR, 3-day SR and 5-day SR groups. For PSD, the modified multiple platform method was used to specifically limit rapid eye movement （REM） sleep. Differences in the testosterone and luteinizing hormone levels between the younger group and the elder group according to duration of PSD and SR recovery were analysed. Testosterone continued to fall during the sleep deprivation period in a time-dependent manner in both the younger （P=-0.001, correlation coefficient r=-0.651） and elder groups （P=0.001, correlation coefficient r=-0.840）. The elder group showed a significantly lower level of testosterone compared with the younger group after PSD. Upon SR after 3 days of PSD, the testosterone level continued to rise for 5 days after sleep recovery in the younger group （P=0.013）, whereas testosterone concentrations failed to recover until day 5 in the elder group. PSD caused a more detrimental effect on serum testosterone in the elder group compared to the younger group with respect to decreases in luteinizing hormone （LH） levels. The replenishment of serum testosterone level was prohibited in the elder group suggesting that the effects of SD/SR may be age-dependent. The mechanism by which SD affects serum testosterone and how age may modify the process are still unclear.

The tensile elongation behavior and deformation mechanisms of superplastic Mg alloys and Mg composites were examined by extensively reviewing the literature published from the time of the first report on the superplasticity of Mg alloys to the present *** on the superplasticity of Mg alloys have been conducted mainly on Mg-Al-Zn(AZ)series alloys,Mg-Zn-Zr(ZK),Mg-Li and Mg-RE(rare earth)alloys,and in recent years,Mg-RE alloys have attracted the greatest *** effect of grain size and the type and amount of secondary phase particles on the superplasticity of Mg alloys was systematically examined and *** alloys processed by severe plastic deformation(SPD)and powder-metallurgy methods have smaller grain sizes and exhibit superior superplasticity compared to conventionally processed(by extrusion and rolling)Mg *** the AZ alloys,as the volume fraction of the Mg17Al12phase increases,smaller grains are obtained,and the low-temperature superplasticity(LTS)and high-strain-rate superplasticity(HSRS)characteristics become *** ZK60 alloy with finely dispersed Mg Zn2particles exhibits excellent LTS,while the Mg-RE alloys with a high fraction of thermally stable particles exhibit excellent ***-Li alloys can exhibit LTS even at room temperature due to the presence of a high-volume fraction of the body centered cubic(BCC)phase where atomic diffusivity is *** boundary diffusion-and lattice diffusion-controlled grain boundary sliding are found to operate as the dominant deformation mechanisms below~473 K and above~673 K,respectively,at small grain *** mechanism maps were constructed based on the analysis of the deformation behavior of superplastic Mg alloys,and from the maps,the critical conditions for achieving LTS,HSRS and simultaneous achievement of LTS and HRSR were calculated and proposed,and their importance was discussed.

Samples of Mg-8.2Gd-3.8Y-1.1Zn-0.4Zr alloy with and without an intragranular lamellae-shaped long period stacking ordered(LPSO)phase were prepared through heat treatment and a series of hot compression tests on these materials were conducted to examine and evaluate the influence of LPSO on the hot compressive deformation behavior and deformation mechanisms at a given alloy *** values of activation energy for plastic flow(Qc)of the solution treated(without LPSO phase)and annealed alloys(with intragranular LPSO phase)were larger than that for pure Mg,indicating that the presence of a high amount of rare earth(RE)elements and LPSO in the Mg matrix significantly increases *** Qcvalue of the annealed alloy was larger than that of the solution treated alloy at all the strain levels(223.3 vs.195.5 k J/mol in average)and the largest difference in Qcbetween the two alloys was recorded at the smallest strain of 0.1 where precipitation of LPSO during deformation was limited in the solution treated *** observations imply that the formation of LPSO phase out of the RE-rich solid solution matrix during deformation increases Qc,but the increment is not so *** of the hot compressive data of the alloys with LPSO phase and the alloys with RE-rich solid solution matrix in literatures indicates the similarity of the effect of the LPSO and RE-rich solid solution matrix phases on Qcand high-temperature strength.

Comparison of excyclotorsion following graded inferior oblique recession for primary versus secondary inferior oblique overaction

AIM:To compare the changes in excyclotorsion after inferior oblique(IO)recession in patients with primary and secondary inferior oblique overaction(IOOA).METHODS:We retrospectively analyzed the data obtained from patients with IOOA who underwent graded IO *** patients were followed up for at least 3 mo after *** photographs were taken preand postoperatively,and the sum of the angles of torsion in both eyes was used to analyze changes in *** were divided into two groups:those diagnosed with primary IOOA were enrolled in the 1’IOOA group,and those diagnosed with secondary IOOA caused by superior oblique palsy(SOP)were enrolled in the 2’IOOA *** before and after surgery were compared between the two ***:A total of 78 patients were enrolled in this study:34 eyes in the 1’IOOA group and 44 eyes in the 2’IOOA *** the 78 patients,torsional angle significantly decreased from 15.31°±7.40°to 12.11°±6.53°after IO recession(P<0.001).Mean preoperative torsional angle was larger in the 2’IOOA group than in the 1’IOOA group(P=0.03).In both groups,excyclotorsion significantly decreased after IO recession(P=0.001 and P<0.001,respectively);however,there was no significant difference in the amounts of changes in excyclotorsion between the two ***:Excyclotorsion is significantly larger in secondary IOOA than in primary IOOA,and a significant decrease in the torsional angle occurs after IO recession in both types of IOOA.

Hemorrhagic hemangioma in the liver:A case report

Hemangioma is the most common type of benign tumor that arises in the liver. Although rupture and hemorrhage of hepatic hemangioma are rare complications, they can be the cause of mortality. The authors report a case of hemorrhagic hepatic hemangioma: in a 54-yearold woman who was admitted with epigastric *** had taken oral contraceptives several weeks *** results of a blood examination were normal. An abdominal computed tomography scan revealed a tumor in hepatic segment 4, and a hemorrhage inside the cystic mass was suspected. The mass was removed laparoscopically to confirm the tumor properties and control the hemorrhage. The pathologic findings of the resected mass were consistent with hepatic hemangioma with intratumoral hemorrhage. The patient was discharged 8 d after the surgery, without further complications or complaints, and the patient's condition was found to have improved during follow-up.

Efficacy of early treatment with infliximab in pediatric Crohn’s disease

AIM: To investigate the effectiveness of early infliximab use for induction and maintenance therapy in pediatric Crohn’s disease. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of 36 patients with Crohn’s disease. Ten patients (group A) were treated with mesalamine after induction therapy with oral prednisolone, and 13 patients (group B) were treated with azathioprine after induction therapy with oral prednisolone. Thirteen patients (group C) received infliximab and azathioprine for induction and maintenance therapy for the first year, and were treated with azathioprine after 1 year. All patients were followed for at least 24 mo. Efficacy was determined by the relapse rate using the pediatric Crohn’s disease activity index score in each group at 12 and 24 mo. RESULTS: At the 1 year follow-up, the relapse ratee, mi Jin kim, Hae jeong Lee, Yon Ho Choe (23.1%, 3 of 13 patients) in group C was lower than that (61.5%, 8 of 13 patients) in group B (P = 0.047). At the 2 years follow-up, the relapse rate (38.5%, 5 of 13 patients) in group C was lower than that (76.9%, 10 of 13 patients) in group B (P = 0.047). Adverse events in group C were fewer than in groups A and B. CONCLUSION: Early induction with infliximab at diagnosis, known as "top-down" therapy, was effective for reducing the relapse rate compared to conventional therapies for at least 2 years.

The hepatic endoplasmic reticulum(ER)-anchored cytochromes P450(P450s)are mixedfunction oxidases engaged in the biotransformation of physiologically relevant endobiotics as well as of myriad xenobiotics of therapeutic and environmental relevance.P450 ER-content and hence function is regulated by their coordinated hemoprotein syntheses and proteolytic *** P450 proteolytic turnover occurs through a process known as ER-associated degradation(ERAD)that involves ubiquitindependent proteasomal degradation(UPD)and/or autophagic-lysosomal degradation(ALD).Herein,on the basis of available literature reports and our own recent findings of in vitro as well as in vivo experimental studies,we discuss the therapeutic and pathophysiological implications of altered P450 ERAD and its plausible clinical *** specifically(i)describe the P450 ERAD-machinery and how it may be repurposed for the generation of antigenic P450 peptides involved in P450 autoantibodypathogenesis in drug-induced acute hypersensitivity reactions and liver injury,or viral hepatitis;(ⅱ)discuss the relevance of accelerated or disrupted P450-ERAD to the pharmacological and/or toxicological effects of clinically relevant P450 drug substrates;and(ⅲ)detail the pathophysiological consequences of disrupted P450 ERAD,contributing to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)/non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)under certain synergistic cellular conditions.
