Trade-off between microbial carbon use efficiency and specific nutrient-acquiring extracellular enzyme activities under reduced oxygen

Mangroves are one of the most ecologically sensitive ecosystems to global climate change,which have cascading impacts on soil carbon(C),nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)***,mangroves are experiencing increasing N and P loadings and reduced oxygen availability due to intensified climate change and human ***,both direct and interactive effects of these perturbations on microbially mediated soil C,N and P cycling are poorly ***,we simultaneously investigated the effects of N and P loadings and reduced oxygen on microbial biomass,microbial respiration,and extracellular enzyme activities(EEAs)in mangrove *** calculated the microbial metabolic quotient(qCO_(2)),which is regarded as a useful inverse metric of microbial C use efficiency(CUE).Our results show that reduced oxygen significantly increases both qCO_(2) and microbial specific EEAs(enzyme activity per unit of microbial biomass)for C-,N-and P-acquisition regardless of N or P ***,we found that qCO_(2) positively correlated with microbial specific EEAs under reduced oxygen,whereas no clear relationship was detected under ambient *** results suggest that reduced oxygen increases microbial specific EEAs at the expense of increasing microbial respiration per unit biomass,indicating higher energy cost per unit enzyme production.

Speleothem carbonates are precipitated continuously from inorganic carbon dissolved in seepage water infiltrating from the land surface,that reflects a mixture of atmospheric CO_2,respired soil carbon,and epikarst sources,each with distinct δ^(13)C *** aid in deconvolving these signatures,soil samples were collected above the Blue Spring cave system in Sparta,Tennessee,USA and subjected to a series of incubation experiments,in order to constrain the correlation between CO_2respiration rates and soil *** relationship is used to parameterize a simple mixing model which predicts the relationship between δ^(13)C and soil moisture in fluids infiltrating into the underlying cave system.

Synthesis and crystal structure of a neodymium coordination polymer with 2,6-anthraquinonedisulfonate

The coordination polymer, （Nd（H2O）5）2（2,6-AQDS）3.2H2O where 2,6-AQDS = 2,6- anthraquinonedisulfonate, has been synthesised via a hydrothermal route. Structurally, it consists of layers of monomeric Nd polyhedra which are linked by 2,6-AQDS anions forming a polymeric, three-dimensional network. Each Nd atom is nine coordinate, bonding to five water molecules and to four oxygen atoms from four 2,6-AODS anions which in turn pillar the layers by bridging two Nd atoms in one layer, and coordinating to a single Nd in the other.

Modeling regional landslide susceptibility using dynamic soil moisture profiles

A landslide susceptibility mapping study was performed using dynamic hillslope hydrology. The modified infinite slope stability model that directly includes vadose zone soil moisture(SM) was applied at Cleveland Corral, California, US and Krishnabhir, Dhading, Nepal. The variable infiltration capacity(VIC-3l) model simulated vadose zone soil moisture and the wetness index hydrologic model simulated groundwater(GW). The GW model predictions had a 75% NASH-Sutcliffe efficiency when compared to California's in-situ GW measurements. The model performed best during the wet season. Using predicted GW and VIC-3l vadose zone SM, the developed landslide susceptibility maps showed very good agreement with mapped landslides at each study region. Previous quasi-dynamic model predictions of Nepal's hazardous areas during extreme rainfall events were enhanced to improve the spatial characterization and provide the timing of hazardous conditions.

Optimizing outcomes for patients with gastric cancer peritoneal carcinomatosis

Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) from gastric cancer has traditionally been considered a terminal progression of the disease and is associated with poor survival out-comes. Positive peritoneal cytology similarly worsens the survival of patients with gastric cancer and treatment options for these patients have been limited. Recent ad-vances in multimodality treatment regimens have led to innovative ways to care for and treat patients with this disease burden. One of these advances has been to use neoadjuvant therapy to try and convert patients with positivecytologyorlow-volume PC to negative cytolo-gy with no evidence of active peritoneal *** strategies include the use of neoadjuvant systemic chemotherapy alone,using neoadjuvant laparoscopic heated intraper itoneal chemotherapy(NlHIPEC)after systemic chemotherapy,or using neoadjuvant intra-peritoneal and systemic chemother apy(NIPS)in a bi-dir ectional manner. For patients with higher volume PC,cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intrape-ritoneal chemotherapy(HIPEC)have been mainstays of treatment. When used together, CRS and HIPEC can improve overall outcomes in properly selected patients,but overall survival outcomes remain unacceptably *** extent of peritoneal disease, commonly measured by the peritoneal carcinomatosis index (PCI), and the com-pleteness of cytor eduction,has been shown to greatly impact outcomes in patients undergoing CRS and *** uses of NlHIPEC and NlHIPEC plus NIPS have both been shown to decrease the PCI and thus increase the opportunity for complete cytoreduction. Effects of music and video on perceived exertion during high-intensity exercise

Background: Dissociative attentional stimuli(e.g., music, video) are effective in decreasing ratings of perceived exertion(RPE) during low-tomoderate intensity exercise, but have inconsistent results during exercise at higher intensity. The purpose of this study was to assess attentional focus and RPE during high-intensity exercise as a function of being exposed to music, video, both(music and video), or a no-treatment control ***: During the first session, healthy men(n = 15) completed a maximal fitness test to determine the workload necessary for high-intensity exercise(operationalized as 125% ventilatory threshold) to be performed during subsequent sessions. On 4 subsequent days, they completed 20 min of high-intensity exercise in a no-treatment control condition or while listening to music, watching a video, or both. Attentional focus, RPE,heart rate, and distance covered were measured every 4 min during the ***: Music and video in combination resulted in significantly lower RPE across time(partial η~2= 0.36) and the size of the effect increased over time(partial η~2= 0.14). Additionally, music and video in combination resulted in a significantly more dissociative focus than the other conditions(partial η~2= 0.29).Conclusion: Music and video in combination may result in lower perceived exertion during high-intensity exercise when compared to music or video in isolation. Future research will be necessary to test if reductions in perceived exertion in response to dissociative attentional stimuli have implications for exercise adherence.

This brief overview highlights the global crisis of perinatal psychiatric illness(PPI).PPI is a major contributor to many adverse pregnancy,childbirth,and childhood development *** contributes to billions of dollars in spending worldwide each year and has a significant impact on the individual,their family,and their *** is also highly *** recommendations for intervention and management of PPI are limited and vary considerably from country to ***,there are several significant challenges associated with implementation of these *** challenges are magnified in number and consequence among women of color and/or minority populations,who experience persistent and negative health disparities during pregnancy and the postpartum *** paper aims to provide a broad overview of the current state of recommendations and implementation challenges for PPI and layout a framework for overcoming these *** equityinformed model of care that provides universal intervention for pregnant women may be one solution to address the preventable consequences of PPI on child and maternal ***,this model emphasizes the importance of managing and eliminating known barriers to traditional health care *** and contextually specific challenges must be overcome to fully realize the impact of improved management of PPI.

Determination of the cellulase activity distribution in Clostridium thermocellum and Caldicellulosiruptor obsidiansis cultures using a fluorescent substrate

This study took advantage of resorufin cellobioside as a fluorescent substrate to determine the distribution of cellulase activity in cellulosic biomass fermentation systems. Cellulolytic biofilms were found to express nearly four orders greater cellulase activity compared to planktonic cultures of Clostridium thermocellum and Caldicellulosiruptor obsidiansis, which can be primarily attributed to the high cell concentration and surface attachment. The formation of biofilms results in cellulases being secreted close to their substrates, which appears to be an energetically favorable stategy for insoluble substrate utilization. For the same reason,cellulases should be closely associated with the surfaces of suspended cell in soluble substrate-fed culture, which has been verified with cellobiose-fed cultures of C. thermocellum and C. obsidiansis. This study addressed the importance of cellulase activity distribution in cellulosic biomass fermentation, and provided theoretical foundation for the leading role of biofilm in cellulose degradation. System optimization and reactor designs that promote biofilm formation in cellulosic biomass hydrolysis may promise an improved cellulosic biofuel process.

Association between axial length and toric intraocular lens rotation according to an online toric back-calculator

Dysphagia,defined as difficulty swallowing,is a common symptom negatively impacting millions of adults *** prevalence ranges from 14 to 33 percent in those over age 65 to over 70 percent in a nursing home *** elderly,those with neurodegenerative diseases,head and neck cancer patients,and those with autoimmune conditions such as Sjögren's syndrome are disproportionately *** dysphagia refers specifically to difficulty in initiating a swallow due to dysfunction at or above the upper esophageal sphincter,and represents a large proportion of dysphagia *** treatments are limited and are often *** cell therapy is a new and novel advancement that may fill a much-needed role in our treatment ***,we review the current literature regarding stem cell treatments for oropharyngeal *** discussed include tissue regeneration advancements as a whole and translation of these principles into research surrounding tongue dysfunction,xerostomia,cricopharyngeal dysfunction,and finally an overview of the challenges and future directions for *** this field of study remains in its early stages,initial promising results show potential for the use of stem cell-based therapies to treat oropharyngeal dysphagia and warrant further research.
