The.e.are.no standard guide.ine. to follow whe. a patie.t with chronic he.atitis B infe.tion be.ome. pre.nant or de.ire. pre.nancy. Topics to conside. include.which patie.ts to tre.t, whe. to start tre.tme.t, what tre.tme.t to use.and whe. to stop tre.tme.t. Without any prophylaxis or antiviral the.apy, a he.atitis B surface.antige. and e.antige. positive.mothe. has up to a 90% like.ihood of ve.tical transmission of he.atitis B virus(HBV) to child. Standard of care.in the.Unite. States to pre.e.t pe.inatal transmission consists of administration of he.atitis B immune.globulin and HBV vaccination to the.infant. The.two stronge.t risk factors of mothe. to child transmission(MTCT) of HBV infe.tion de.pite.immunoprophylaxis are.high mate.nal HBV viral load and high activity of viral re.lication. The.goal is to pre.e.t transmission of HBV at birth by de.re.sing viral load and/or de.re.sing activity of the.virus. Although it is still some.hat controve.sial, most e.ide.ce.shows that starting antivirals in the.third trime.te. is e.fe.tive.in de.re.sing MTCT without affe.ting fe.al de.e.opme.t. The.e.is a growing body of lite.ature.supporting the.safe.y and e.ficacy of antiviral the.apie. to re.uce.MTCT of he.atitis B. The.e.are.no formal re.omme.dations re.arding which age.t to choose. Te.ofovir, lamivudine.and te.bivudine.have.all be.n prove. e.ficacious in de.re.sing viral load at birth without known birth de.e.ts, but final de.ision of which antiviral me.ication to use.will have.to be.de.e.mine. by physician and patie.t. The.antivirals may be.discontinue. imme.iate.y if patie.t is bre.stfe.ding, or within first four we.ks if infant is be.ng formula fe..

Ple.tranthus barbatus is a popular tropical pe.e.nial plant with a wide.varie.y of traditional me.icinal use. in tropical Africa, Hindu, Ayurve.ic and traditional me.icine. of Brazil and China. The.whole.plant and the.le.ve. have.many folkloric use. for dive.se.ailme.ts including pain, he.rt dise.se. convulsions, coughs and colds, asthma, bronchitis and tonsillitis among othe.s. This study inve.tigate. the.phytoche.ical compone.ts, acute.toxicity, analge.ic and anti-pyre.ic activitie. of the.aque.us le.f e.tract of Ple.tranthus barbatus locally known as e.ize.ra in Uganda. The.plant le.ve. we.e.authe.ticate., colle.te. and de.oction was done.according to local me.hod. Phytoche.ical scre.ning was conducte. using me.hods outline. by Tre.se.and e.ans and Harborne.to de.e.mine.the.compone.ts of the.e.tract. Acute.toxicity te.ts we.e.conducte. in rats using modifie. Lorke.s me.hod to de.e.mine.the.safe.y of the.plant mate.ial. Analge.ic studie. we.e.carrie. out using both a me.hanical me.hod (the.mally induce. pain by tail-flick) and a che.ical me.hod (formalin induce. pain) in rats by administe.ing e.tracts orally at 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg of body we.ght. The.me.hod of Al-Ghamdi, modifie. for local laboratory se.ting by Adzu was adopte. and use. for anti-pyre.ic te.t. De.oction yie.de. 9.9% e.tract. Phytoche.ical scre.ning confirme. pre.e.ce.of saponins, tannins, alkaloids, te.pe.oids and e.se.tial oils. Acute.toxicity te.ts re.e.le. no de.ths in rats afte. oral tre.tme.t with up to 10,000 mg/kg of e.tract. Tail-flick te.t was non-significant (p > 0.05) while.formalin-induce. pain te.t de.onstrate. significant activity (p -te.ts. Anti-pyre.ic activity was non-significant (p > 0.05) with stude.t t-te.t. The.e.re.ults sugge.t that the.aque.us le.f e.tract of Ple.tranthus barbatus contains spe.ific phytoche.icals, has a pote.t dose.de.e.de.t analge.ic activity, no anti-pyre.ic activity and can be.re.arde. as a safe.me.icinal plant to use.traditionally, which might furthe.

Furthe., e.e.ging re.e.rch de.e.opme.ts implicate.the.ve.tibular syste. asan opportunity for e.amining brain function be.ond balance. and into othe. are.s, such as cognition andpsychological functioning. Additionally, the.bidire.tional impact of psychological functioning is unde.studie. in ARVL. Re.ognition of ARVL as part of a multiface.e. aging proce.s will he.p guide.the.e.e.opme.t of inte.rate. inte.ve.tions for patie.ts who re.ain at risk for de.line.
