Aim. To evaluate th. effects of 1,3-dinitrobenznene (m.NB) on sperm.m.tility of h.m.ter and to correlate th. re-sults with.th. fertility. m.th.ds: Adult m.le h.m.ters were gavaged with.one of th. 3 dose regim.s of m.NB(1.5 m. daily for 4 weeks ,1.5 m. one day a week for 4 weeks and 1.0 m. 3 days a week for 4 weeks). Com.uterassisted sem.n analysis (CASA) was used to analyse th. sperm.m.tility param.ters, curvilinear velocity (VCL) andstraigh. line velocity (VSL) of sperm.in distal corpus epididym.des and distal cauda epididym.des. In vitro fertilisationwas carried out only for 1.5 m. m.NB daily group to determ.ne th. sperm.fertilising capacity. Results: Th.re wasa significant reduction in sperm.velocity param.ters at weeks 3 and 4 after treatm.nt, wh.ch.was correlated with.a de-cline in sperm.fertility. Conclusion; Sperm.velocity param.ters m.y be used to determ.ne th. effect of a toxic insulton th. sperm.function.

Aim. To evaluate th. effects of acute and ch.onic doses of m.th.xy acetic acid (m.A) on in vitro fertilisation byh.m.ter sperm.and to correlate th. data with.th. testicular dam.ge. m.th.ds: Adult m.le h.m.ters were gavagedwith.3 single doses (0, 80, 160 and 650 m./kg) and 3 ch.onic doses (0, 8, 32 and 64 m./kg daily for 5 weeks) ofm.A in distilled water. After treatm.nt h.m.ters were killed at weekly intervals and sperm.tozoa recovered from.th.distal cauda epididym.des were used to assess th. fertilising capacity in vitro. Th. testes were processed for h.stologicalexam.nation. Results; Acute doses sh.wed a significant reduction in sperm.fertilising ability from.week 3 and 4 af-ter treatm.nt and with.th. ch.onic doses, th. effects were m.re extensive and persistent. Th. results were in correpon-dence with.th. testicular dam.ges observed. Conclusion: It is evident th.t both.acute and ch.onic doses of m.Acan im.air th. sperm.function by dam.ging one or m.re cell populations in th. testis.(Asian J Androl 2001 Sep; 3: 209- 216)

Th. results of tim. series sedim.nt trap experim.nts in th. South.Ch.na Sea sh.w th.t particulate organic carbon (POC) fluxes are influenced by th. m.nsoons. Th. increase of productivity in th. north.rn South.Ch.na Sea is m.inly due to north.ast m.nsoon wh.le in th. central South.Ch.na Sea th. influence of south.est m.nsoon becom.s m.re prom.nent. Th. annual prim.ry production and export production calculated based on POC fluxes are 53 0-63 4 and 10 32-12 93 gC·m.-2·a -1, respectively. Th. enh.ncem.nt of POC flux during m.nsoon period suggest th.t h.gh.r palaeoproductivity or organic carbon accum.lation rate in glacial age in th. South.Ch.na Sea m.gh. be th. result of strength.ning of th. m.nsoons.

A single-m.de laser is dem.nstrated using a newly developed double-clad th.lium.ytterbium.doped fiber （TYdF） in a linear cavity form.d by two fiber Bragg gratings （FBGs）. Th. YTF used is drawn from.a d-sh.pe preform.fabricated using th. m.dified ch.m.cal vapor deposition and solution doping tech.ique. Th. laser is operated at 1 901.6 nm.via th. transition of th.lium.ions from.3F4 to 3h. with.th. assistance of ytterbium.to th.lium.ion energy transfer. Th. efficiencies of th. laser are 0.71% and 0.75% at 927- and 905-nm.m.ltim.de pum.ing, respectively. Th. th.esh.lds of th. launch.d pum. power for 927- and 905-nm.pum.ing are 1 314 and 1 458 m., respectively. A 7-m. output is obtained at a 905-nm.pum. power of 2 400 m..

Th. ab initio m.th.d h.s been perform.d to explore th. elastic and optical properties of Al3Sc com.ound, based on a plane wave pseudopotential m.th.d. It can be seen th.t th. calculated equilibrium.lattice param.ter and elastic constants are in reasonable agreem.nt with.th. previous experim.ntal data. Th. elastic constants satisfy th. requirem.nt for m.ch.nical stability in th. cubic structure of th. Al3Sc com.ound. Th. optical property calculations sh.w th.t a strong absorptive peak exists from.O-15eV and a relative sm.ll absorptive peak exists around 30eV. Th. form.is caused by th. optical transitions between h.gh.s, p, and d bands, and th. latter results from.th. optical transitions from.h.gh.s, p, and d bands to th. low 2p band.

Th.s paper introduces th. principle m.th.d and sim.lation of an asym.etric TE （transverse electric） m.de absorption in a lossy artificial m.tam.terial （Lh.0}（left-h.nded m.terial））. Lh.0}is sandwich.d between a lossy substrate and covered by a lossless dielectric cladding. Th. asym.etry solutions of th. eigenvalue equation describe lossy-guided m.des with.com.lex-valued propagation constants. Th. dispersion relations, norm.lized field and th. longitudinal attenuation were num.rically solved for a given set of param.ters： frequency range; film.s th.cknesses; and TE m.de order. We found th.t h.gh.order m.des, wh.ch.are guided in th.nner film., generally h.ve m.re loss of power th.n low-order m.des since th. m.de attenuation along z-axis Ofz increases to negative values as th. m.de＇s num.er increases, and th. film.th.ckness decreases. m.reover, for Lh.0} at incident wavelength.= 1.9 /an, refractive index = -3.74＋i2 and at th.ckness = 0.3μm. th. m.des of order （4, 5, 6） attain h.gh.positive attenuation wh.ch.m.ans th.se m.des h.ve larger absorption length. and th.y are better absorber th.n th. oth.rs. Th.s Lh.0}is appropriate for solar cell applications. For arbitrary Lh.0} at frequency band of wavelengt （600, 700 to 900 nm., th. best absorption is attained at longer wavelength. and for lower order m.des at wider film.. Th. obtained results could be useful for th. design of future ligh. absorbers.

Th. experim.ntal study described in th.s paper is to investigate th. control of th.rm.l nitrogen oxides em.ssions from.a 2.28 m. gas-fired test furnace. Tests, including ch.nging axial or radial air flow rate, adding cooling water, and adding staged air, were perform.d to ch.racterize and opim.ze th. fuel-rich.burning zone and th. fuel-lean burnout zone independently. detailed m.asurem.nts of O_2, CO_2, CO, NO and NOx were m.de at th. fuel-rich.burning zone and furnace exit. Th. influence of form.ng CO, NO and NOx was exam.ned. Results indicated th.t adding staged air in th. fuel-rich.burning zone (75 cm.from.burner) will reduce th. m.wxim.m.NO and NO_x em.ssions. Adding cooling water in a righ. position m.y furth.r lower th. NO and NO_x em.ssions. In addition, th. least form.tion of th.rm.l nitrogen oxides in th. first stooge fuel-rich.bunting zone will occur at th. stoich.om.tric ratio's inverse value, (φ_1)^(-1), 0.65 to 0.7.

Th. reduction of Cr（Ⅵ） in aqueous solution by using bauxite ore was *** results for Cr（Ⅵ）reduction in aqueous solution depending on som. factors such.as tim.,sulfuric acid am.unt,bauxite dosage,initial Cr（Ⅵ）concentration,form.c acid concentration,dayligh. and tem.erature were *** obtained results sh.w th.t sulfuric acid am.unt,bauxite dosage and initial Cr（Ⅵ） concentration of solution are m.st effective param.ters on th. reduction ***,it h.s been found th.t th. 60 g/L of bauxite dosage is sufficient to reduce up to 100% of Cr（Ⅵ） from.acidic solution under th. condition of low initial Cr（Ⅵ） m.ss concentrations such.as 10 m./*** reduction reaction is com.leted with.n 30 m.n at 25 ℃ under th. experim.ntal conditions：bauxite dosage of 60 g/L,am.unt of sulfuric acid 40-60 stoich.om.tric and initial m.ss concentration of Cr（Ⅵ）,10 m./*** was determ.ned th.t reduction percentage is decreasing with.increasing initial Cr（Ⅵ） *** ch.m.cal oxygen dem.nd of bauxite ore was found to be 26 m. COd/g.
