Objective::Prenatal infection with the Zika virus (ZIKV) can lead to congenital Zika syndrome (CZS), characterized by microcephaly and brain injury. However, there are questions regarding the prevalence of microcephaly/CZS after the ZIKV outbreak in defined geographic areas. This study aimed to identify adverse outcomes in live births of fetuses exposed in utero to the ZIKV, compared to unexposed births, as well as maternal sociodemographic, delivery, and birth ***::Here, we conducted a cross-sectional observational study to investigate the characteristics of all live births in the city of Tangará da Serra, mato Grosso, Brazil, in 2016, after the outbreak of ZIKV infection in late 2015. All live births of children to women residing in the municipality of Tangará da Serra between January 1 and December 31, 2016, were evaluated, and head circumference was measured at birth and after 24 hours. Children born with microcephaly or a maternal history of confirmed or suspected prenatal ZIKV infection were evaluated by a multidisciplinary team. The outcomes of the exposed and non-exposed children were compared. Prevalence ratios and their respective 95% confidence intervals were calculated for sociodemographic, delivery, and live birth ***::Of 1,441 live births, 106 (7.3%) were from mothers with confirmed or highly probable exposure to ZIKV. The prevalence of severe congenital microcephaly (41.7/10,000) in Tangará da Serra in 2016 was ten-fold higher than that in Latin America before ***::This study may serve as a model to investigate possible outbreaks of infections in a defined geographical space in the future.

Polynomial Generalizations and Combinatorial Interpretations for Sequences Including the Fibonacci and Pell Numbers

In this paper we present combinatorial interpretations and polynomials generalizations for sequences including the Fibonacci numbers, the Pell numbers and the Jacobsthal numbers in terms of partitions. It is important to mention that results of this nature were given by Santos and Ivkovic in two papers published on the Fibonacci Quarterly, Polynomial generalizations of the Pell sequence and the Fibonacci sequence [1] and Fibonacci Numbers and Partitions [2] , and one, by Santos, on Discrete mathematics, On the Combinatorics of Polynomial generalizations of Rogers-Ramanujan Type Identities [3]. By these results one can see that from the q-series identities important combinatorial information can be obtained by a careful study of the two variable function introduced by Andrews in Combinatorics and Ramanujan's lost notebook [4].

<i>In Vitro</i>Priming of Sugarcane Varieties (RB966928 and RB867515)

Sugarcane, as a glycophyte, shows sensitivity to saline soils at various stages of its growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro priming response in two sugarcane varieties (RB966928 and RB867515). Micropropagated plants, from meristems, received priming treatments by adding the salts (NaCl and KCl) in different concentrations (0.0;12.5;25.0 and 50.0 mM), in the MS medium. Subsequently, the plants were cultivated in rooting medium without addition of salts, acclimatized and submitted to gradient ex vitro saline stress with 20 → 40 and 60 mM, of each salt, for 30 days. The analyzed variables were dry matter of shoot and root, number of tillers and estimation of chlorophyll content. The experiment was carried out in a 2 × 2 × 4 factorial arrangement, in a completely randomized experimental design. Twenty replicates were used throughout the experiment. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and regression and the means were compared by Tukey’s test, at a 5% probability level. The priming treatments presented a significant effect, with triple interaction, in the chlorophyll index. In the treatment with NaCl, the variety RB966928 showed an increase in the chlorophyll index with the increase of treatment levels, up to an optimal limit of 31.47 mM. On the other hand, the variety RB867515 showed decreasing in chlorophyll index. In contrast, in KCl treatment, the variety RB867515 presented the increase at the chlorophyll index with the maximum point of 25 mM. For the variables, shoot dry matter (SDM) and root dry matter (RDM) there was a significant difference (p 0.05 and p 0.01, respectively) only between the varieties. The variety RB966928 presented higher SDM and RDM in relation to the variety RB867515. Studies are recommended with increasing the duration of the priming treatments and more detailed study of the culture throughout its productive cycle.

An empiric equation for the latent heat of vaporization of moisture in bananas during its isothermal drying

In order to determine the energy needed to artificially dry a product, the latent heat of vaporization of moisture in the product, hfg, must be known. Generally, the expressions for hfg reported in the literature are of the form hfg = h(T)f(M), where h(T) is the latent heat of vaporization of free water, and f(M) is a function of the equilibrium moisture content, M. But expressions of this type contain a simplification because, in this case, the ratio hfg/h would only depend to the moisture content. In this article a more general expression for the latent heat of vaporization, namely hfg = g(M,T), is used to determine hfg for banana. To this end, a computer program was developed which fits automatically about 500 functions, with one or two independent variables, imbedded in its library to experimental data. The program uses nonlinear regression, and classifies the best functions according to the least reduced chi-square. A set of executed statistical tests shows that the generalized expression used in this work given by hfg = g(M,T) produces better results of hfg for bananas than other equations found in the literature.

Parkin protein expression and its impact on survival of patients with advanced colorectal cancer

Objective:Features of colorectal cancer such as natural history,molecular,chromosomal,and epigenetic alterations have been well ***,there is still a lack of accurate prognostic markers,which is evident by the lower overall survival rates of patients with advanced *** alterations in parkin protein expression have been described in colorectal cancer,the functional significance of this protein remains *** present study aimed to investigate the involvement of parkin expression in colorectal adenocarcinoma development and progression by evaluating the association between its expression,clinicopathological parameters,and expression of known proteins involved in colorectal ***:Tissue microarrays consisting of 73 tumor and 64 normal tissue samples were generated to examine parkin expression and localization by ***:A positive correlation of parkin and APC expression was observed in the superficial,intermediate,and profound regions of all cases(ρ=0.37;P=0.001).Parkin expression was also significantly associated with tumors in men(P=0.049),those of the mucinous subtype(P=0.028),and of advanced stage(III+IV,P=0.041).In addition,increased parkin expression was observed in the invasive front tumor region(P=0.013).More importantly,a positive correlation was found between parkin expression and the overall survival of patients with advanced colorectal cancer(P=0.019).Multivariate analysis showed that parkin expression was independent of any of the clinicopathological parameters evaluated in relation to patient ***:These results suggest that parkin expression status can be used as a potential independent prognostic marker of survival in advanced colorectal cancer.
