The pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum hosts different facultative symbionts(FS)which provide it with various benefits,such as tolerance to heat or protection against natural enemies(e.g.,fungi,parasitoid wasps).Here,we investigated whether and how the presence of certain FS could affect phenoloxidase(PO)activity,a key component of insect innate immunity,under normal and stressed conditions.For this,we used clones of A.pisum of difTerent genetic backgrounds(LLOl,YR2 and T3-8V1)lacking FS or harboring one or two(Regiella insecticola,Hamiltonella defensa,Serratia symbiotica Rickettsiella viridis).Gene expression and proteomics analyses of the aphid hemolymph indicated that the two A.pisum POs,PPOl and PP02,are expressed and translated into proteins.The level of PPO genes expression as well as the amount of PPO proteins and phenoloxidase activity in the hemolymph depended on both the aphid genotype and FS species.In particular,H.defensa and R.insecticola,but not S.symbiotica-h R.viridis,caused a sharp decrease in PO activity by interfering with both transcription and translation.The microinjection of different types of stressors(yeast,Escherichia coli,latex beads)in the YR2 lines hosting different symbionts affected the survival rate of aphids and,in most cases,also decreased the expression of PPO genes after 24 h.The amount and activity of PPO proteins varied according to the type of FS and stressor,without clear corresponding changes in gene expression.These data demonstrate that the presence of certain FS influences an important component of pea aphid immunity.

Measurement of vibration frequencies of ties in masonry arches by means of a robotic total station

Measurement of the vibration frequencies of eight ties set in masonry arches of a church by means of a robotic total station is described.The instrument made continuous recordings(up to ten per second)of the three-dimensional positions of a reflector situated at 1/2 or 1/4 of the length of the tie during vertical oscillation induced by an impulsive load.The recording slips,vibration amplitudes(and their accuracy),hourly diagram and experimental spectra of vibrations,and the corresponding frequencies were calculated.The results were verified by comparing them with the vibration frequencies and indirectly the tension and fixed support constraint calculated from accelerometric measurements.The study provides interesting information on the accuracies of the reflector′s three-dimensional coordinates,but highlighted certain limits in the application of robotized total stations for measuring vibration frequencies of ties in masonry arches.

Laser control strategies in full-dimensional funneling dynamics:the case of pyrazine[Invited]

Motivated by the major role funneling dynamics plays in light-harvesting processes,we built some laser control strategies inspired from basic mechanisms such as interference and kicks,and applied them to the case of pyrazine.We are studying the internal conversion between the two excited states,the highest and directly reachable from the initial ground state being considered as a donor and the lowest as an acceptor.The ultimate control objective is the maximum population deposit in the otherwise dark acceptor from a two-step process:radiative excitation of the donor,followed by a conical-intersection-mediated funneling towards the acceptor.The overall idea is to first obtain the control field parameters(individual pulses leading frequency and intensity,duration,and inter-pulse time delay)for tractable reduced dimensional models basically describing the conical intersection branching space.Once these parameters are optimized,they are fixed and used in full-dimensional dynamics describing the electronic population transfer.In the case of pyrazine,the reduced model is four-dimensional,whereas the full dynamics involves 24 vibrational modes.Within experimentally achievable electromagnetic field requirements,we obtain a robust control with about 60%of the ground state population deposited in the acceptor state,while about 16%remains in the donor.Moreover,we anticipate a possible transposition to the control of even larger molecular systems,for which only a small number of normal modes are active,among all the others acting as spectators in the dynamics.

The success of Density Functional Theory(DFT)is partly due to that of simple approximations,such as the Local Density Approximation(LDA),which uses results of a model,the homogeneous electron gas,to simulate exchange-correlation effects in real materials.We turn this intuitive approximation into a general and in principle exact theory by introducing the concept of a connector:a prescription how to use results of a model system in order to simulate a given quantity in a real system.In this framework,the LDA can be understood as one particular approximation for a connector that is designed to link the exchange-correlation potentials in the real material to that of the model.Formulating the in principle exact connector equations allows us to go beyond the LDA in a systematic way.Moreover,connector theory is not bound to DFT,and it suggests approximations also for other functionals and other observables.We explain why this very general approach is indeed a convenient starting point for approximations.We illustrate our purposes with simple but pertinent examples.

Elastic period of vibration calculated experimentally in buildings hosting permanent GPS stations

During the earthquake in Emilia（Italy） of 2012,ca.30 permanent GPS stations were in operation within a radius of about 100 km from the epicenter,each equipped with an antenna rigidly fixed to the host building and sampling the GPS signal at a high rate（〉 1 Hz）.From the recording of the GPS measurements,the instantaneous displacements s（t） in the NorthSouth and East-West directions of the phase centers of the single GPS antennas at each permanent station during the most important seismic sequences were calculated in kinematic mode.Subsequently,for each of the two displacements considered as two distinct external forces,the elastic response spectra of the building were determined and from them the two periods of vibration T along two orthogonal directions coinciding with the walls of the building were extracted.The experimentally obtained periods of vibration were compared with those inferable from the technical literature.In this way,a sufficiently large sample was obtained per building type,geometry（square,rectangular,regular or irregular planimetry）,height（from a minimum of 4 to a maximum of 20 m） and materials（masonry,reinforced concrete,etc.）.From the computational point of view,the study confirmed that GPS is an emerging tool for monitoring dynamic displacements and the experimentally estimated value of T is always lower than the one estimated with the formulae reported in the literature.The limitations of the study lie in the impossibility to choose a priori the geometry and/or structural type of the building hosting the GPS station.

Since hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)represents an important cause of mortality and morbidity all over the world.Currently,it is fundamental not only to achieve a curative treatment but also to manage in the best way any possible recurrence.Even if the latest update of the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer guidelines for HCC treatment has introduced new locoregional techniques and confirmed others as well-established clinical practices,there is still no consensus about the treatment of recurrent HCC(RHCC).Locoregional treatments and medical therapy represent two of the most widely accepted approaches for disease control,especially in the advanced stage of liver disease.Different medical treatments are now approved,and others are under investigation.On this basis,radiology plays a central role in the diagnosis of RHCC and the assessment of response to locoregional treatments and medical therapy for RHCC.This review summarized the actual clinical practice by underlining the importance of the radiological approach both in the diagnosis and treatment of RHCC.

MicroRNAs:new players in the DNA damage response

The DNA damage response(DDR)is a signal transduction pathway that decides the cell’s fate either to repair DNA damage or to undergo apoptosis if there is too much damage.Post-translational modifications modulate the assembly and activity of protein complexes during the DDR pathways.MicroRNAs(miRNAs)are emerging as a class of endogenous gene modulators that control protein levels,thereby adding a new layer of regulation to the DDR.In this review,we describe a new role for miRNAs in regulating the cellular response to DNA damage with a focus on DNA double-strand break damage.We also discuss the implications of miRNA’s role in the DDR to stem cells,including embryonic stem cells and cancer stem cells,stressing the potential applications for miRNAs to be used as sensitizers for cancer radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Liver lesions are common findings in radiologists’daily routine.They are a complex category of pathology that range from solitary benign lesions to primary liver cancer and liver metastases.Benign focal liver lesions can arise from different liver cell types:Epithelial(hepatocytes and biliary cells)and nonepithelial(mesenchymal cells).Liver magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)is a fundamental radiological method in these patients as it allows with its multiparametric approach optimal non-invasive tissue characterization.Furthermore,advanced liver MRI techniques such as diffusion-weighted imaging and hepatobiliary contrast agents have improved the detection of focal liver lesions and can be highly effective in differentiating pseudotumor from tumors,as well as benign from malignant lesions,and can also be used for differential diagnosis.Although histological examination can be useful in making a definitive diagnosis,MRI is an important modality in the diagnosis of liver lesions with a significant impact on patient care.This aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of benign liver lesions on MRI.

During the first wave of the pandemic,coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)infection has been considered mainly as a pulmonary infection.However,different clinical and radiological manifestations were observed over time,including involvement of abdominal organs.Nowadays,the liver is considered one of the main affected abdominal organs.Hepatic involvement may be caused by either a direct damage by the virus or an indirect damage related to COVID-19 induced thrombosis or to the use of different drugs.After clinical assessment,radiology plays a key role in the evaluation of liver involvement.Ultrasonography(US),computed tomography(CT)and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)may be used to evaluate liver involvement.US is widely available and it is considered the first-line technique to assess liver involvement in COVID-19 infection,in particular liver steatosis and portal-vein thrombosis.CT and MRI are used as second-and third-line techniques,respectively,considering their higher sensitivity and specificity compared to US for assessment of both parenchyma and vascularization.This review aims to the spectrum of COVID-19 liver involvement and the most common imaging features of COVID-19 liver damage.

Locoregional treatments,as alternatives to surgery,play a key role in the management of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).Liver magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)enables a multiparametric assessment,going beyond the traditional dynamic computed tomography approach.Moreover,the use of hepatobiliary agents can improve diagnostic accuracy and are becoming important in the diagnosis and follow-up of HCC.However,the main challenge is to quickly identify classical responses to loco-regional treatments in order to determine the most suitable management strategy for each patient.The aim of this review is to provide a summary of the most common and uncommon liver MRI findings in patients who underwent loco-regional treatments for HCC,with a special focus on ablative therapies(radiofrequency,microwaves and cryoablation),transarterial chemoembolization,trans-arterial radio-embolization and stereotactic ablative radiotherapy techniques,considering the usefulness of gadoxetate disodium(Gd-EOB-DTPA)contrast agent.
