Morpho-Structural Mapping Constraints from Geophysical and Test Pit Investigations: Case Study of the Bomkoul Locality in Douala Sedimentary Basin, Cameroon, Central Africa

A survey using the electrical resistivity and test pit methods is carried out in the Douala subbasin in order to investigate the sub-surface layering and evaluate the thickness of each layer through the variation of the resistivity with the depth. Applying the Schumberger array, a total of 48 vertical electrical sounding is conducted along 8 profiles directed W-E and using traditional method, 25 test pits with depth between 15 and 19 meters are done. Qualitative interpretation is carried out through the resistivity and test pit maps. The test pit maps reveal the presence of the following layers: The first layer of thickness varies from 0.2 to 2.0 m (average of 1.9 m). The thickness of the second layer varies between 0.2 and 4.0 m with an average of 2.8 m. The thickness of the third layer is between 2.0 and 4.0 m with an average of 3.8 m. That of the fourth and fifth layers ranges respectively between 4.0 and 6.0 m (average of 5.4 m) and between 2.0 and 6.0 m with an average of 4.4 m. Isoresistivities maps from resistivities computed for different AB/2 values (1.5;4.4;13.5;19;27.5;58 m) are generally characterized by the apparent resistivities which define many domains in function of the AB/2 values. The superficial layer is characterized by electric resistivity values ranging from 720 to 2073 Ωm for AB/2 = 1.5 m and probably represents pedologic materials. For other values of AB/2, resistivity varies from 253 to 32,381 Ωm (AB/2 = 4.4 m), 0.1 to 1838 (AB/2 = 13.2 m) with an average of 341 Ωm, 0.3 to 1608 Ωm (AB/2 = 19 m) with an average of 279 Ωm, 6.4 to 1427 Ωm (AB/2 = 27.5 m) with an average 291 Ωm, and 19.7 to 3555 Ωm (AB/2 = 58 m) with an average of 850 Ωm. These different values of resistivity represent the sedimentary materials.

Natural history, treatment and prevention of hepatitis C recurrence after liver transplantation: Past, present and future

Hepatitis C virus(HCV)-related liver disease, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma is the main indication for liver transplantation(LT) worldwide. Posttransplant HCV re-infection is almost universal and results in accelerated progression from acute hepatitis to chronic hepatitis, and liver cirrhosis. Comprehension and treatment of recurrent HCV infection after LT have been major issues for all transplant hepatologists and transplant surgeons for the last decades. The aim of this paper is to review the evolution of our knowledge on the natural history of HCV recurrence after LT, including risk factors for disease progression, and antiviral therapy. We will focus our attention on possible ways(present and future) to improve the final longterm results of LT for HCV-related liver disease.

Laparoscopic total colectomy: Does the indication influence the outcome?

AIM: To assess and compare outcomes of laparoscopic total colectomy performed for a variety of indications. METHODS: Sixty six patients underwent laparoscopic total colectomy for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (13) and other diseases (53). Data on demographics, pre and post-operative outcomes were collected ***: Mean operative time was 4.5 h. Conversion rate was 13.6%. Total colectomy performed for IBD was associated with a signifi cantly higher anastomotic leak rate (23.1% vs 1.9%, P < 0.05). On univariate analysis, hand sewn anastomosis and treatment with more than 20 mg of prednisolone for at least 3 mo was associated with a higher anastomotic leak rate (P < 0.05). No signifi cant difference was found in return of gut function and overall morbidity between disease groups. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic total colectomy is feasible and outcomes are equivalent whatever the indica- tion, except for anastomotic leak rate which is higher for patients with IBD.

Diurnal Variability of the Radiative Impact of Atmospheric Aerosols in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso: A Seasonal Approach

The objective of this work is to study the diurnal evolution of the radiative impact of atmospheric aerosols in an urban city located in the West African Sahel and the correlations with the main influencing factors of local climate dynamics. The simulation was performed using a treatment chain including the GAME code. In the methodology, the atmosphere is modeled by 33 plane parallel layers and the effects of absorption, multiple scattering by particles and gas are taken account. An hour-by-hour calculation of radiative forcing at the top of the atmosphere, in the atmospheric layer and at the earth’s surface was performed. The data used as input are the monthly averages of optical properties, radiosonde measurements, daily synoptic measurements and surface albedo. The results show a parabolic diurnal course of a negative radiative impact at the top of the atmosphere with an extremum at 12 o'clock. Maximum cooling is observed shortly after sunrise and shortly after sunset. The largest annual deviations are noted between the months of March and December with respective maximum cooling values of -34 W/m2 and -15.60 W/m2. On the earth’s surface, a cooling impact is observed with two diurnal peaks at sunrise and sunset, the greatest difference between the diurnal maximums is noted between March (-104.45 W/m2) and August (-54 W/m2). In the atmospheric layer, there is almost constant diurnal warming between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The maximum difference between the diurnal extremes is also noted between March (about 85 W/m2) and August (35 W/m2). Likewise, the study of the diurnal warming of the first atmospheric layer showed the extreme values in March (5.6°C) and August (2.4°C), these maximum values being always observed at around 12 o’clock. In contrast to mammals and birds,fish display an amazing diversity of genetic sex determination systems,with frequent changes during evolution possibly associated with the emergence of new sex chromosomes and sex-determining *** better understand the molecular and evolutionary mechanisms driving this diversity,several fish models are studied in *** the medaka(Oryzias latipes Temminck and Schlegel,1846)for which the master sex-determination gene has been identified,one of the most advanced models for studying sex determination is the Southern platyfish(Xiphophorus maculatus,Günther 1966).Xiphophorus maculatus belongs to the Poeciliids,a family of live-bearing freshwater fish,including platyfish,swordtails and guppies that perfectly illustrates the diversity of genetic sex-determination mechanisms observed in *** ***,bacterial artificial chro-mosome contigs covering the sex-determination region of the X and Y sex chromosomes have been *** molecular analysis demonstrated that the sex-determination region is very unstable and frequently undergoes duplications,deletions,inversions and other *** gene candidates linked to the master sex-determining gene have been identified,some of them corresponding to *** putative genes are present on both the X and the Y chromosomes,suggesting a poor degree of differentiation and a young evolutionary age for platyfish sex *** compared with other fish and tetrapod genomes,syntenies were detected only with *** observation supports an independent origin of sex chromosomes,not only in different vertebrate lineages but also between different fish species.

Lifestyle Changes for Abdominal Obesity Prevention and Encouraging Fruit Consumption May Be Beneficial in Preventing Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in Sub-Saharan African and Maghreb

There is a growing body of evidence showing a close correlation between left ventricular mass with cardiovascular morbidity and overall mortality. Therefore, identifying the determinants of left ventricular hypertrophy can be of great importance for cardiovascular prevention, for prognosis and therapeutic intervention. Objective: To assess the prevalence and identify the independent determinants of echocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy in The MA-Ghreb and Sub-Saharan Africa Left-Ventricul ArGEometry Study (MAG-SALVAGES) participants. Methods: The MAG-SALVAGES is a community based study in which 100 asymptomatic Black Sub-Saharan African (BSSA) and 189 white skin Maghreb within the age of 18 to 55 years underwent a resting echocardiography. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was utilized to identify the independent determinants of LVH left ventricular hypertrophy. Results: Men represented the majority of the enrolled participants: 173 (59.9%). Echocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy was seen in 10 (3.5%) participants. Age ≥40 years, female gender, overall obesity, abdominal obesity, hypertension status and less fruit consumption were significantly associated with echocardiography left ventricular hypertrophy. After adjusting for confounding factors, age ≥40 years, female gender, abdominal obesity and less fruit consumption were independently and significantly associated with echocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy, as illustrated in the following equation: Y = 0.36 + 0.162 age >40 years + 2.69 female gender + 2.52 abdominal obesity + 1.31 less fruit consumption. Conclusion: Lifestyle changes for the prevention of abdominal obesity and encouraging fruit consumption may be beneficial in preventing left ventricular hypertrophy.

Facial expressions are linked to movements of muscles, which can be altered by pathological diseases. Assessment of facial muscle deficits is subjective (palpation) and operator-dependent, and these deficits are currently estimated with clinical scales. Thus, the quantification of facial muscle elastic properties is a key for the clinical adaption and evaluation of treatments for facial paralysis. We herein present a novel application of shear wave elastography (SWE) based on an ultrasound protocol to assess the morphological (thickness and texture) and elastic (Young’s modulus) properties of the zygomaticus major (ZM) muscle. Fifteen healthy volunteers underwent SWE tests, and the ultrasound acquisitions were obtained using a new linear transducer (SLH20-6, spatial resolution: 38 μm) and compared to those obtained using an SL10-2 probe (spatial resolution: 50 μm). The probe position was placed along the muscle fiber orientation. A semi-automatic method was developed to quantify the ZM muscle elasticity, and the repeatability was analyzed at one-week intervals. The mean elasticity for the two probes was about 15 kPa. The SLH20-6 probe yielded a higher mean elasticity (approximately 6 kPa) and less homogeneous echogenicity than the SL10-2 probe. Two distinct groups of texture profiles as a function of the transducer were obtained. This study will provide some guidance for clinical practices and will allow the construction of a reference database that could be used to evaluate treatments and develop numerical models of facial expression.

Clinical Factors Influencing the Neurological Recovery of Patients Operated for a Cervical Myelopathy at the Teaching Hospital of Bouake

Introduction: Cervical myelopathy is the most common myelopathy among people over 50 of age. Cervicosteoarthritis is the main etiology. The purpose of this work was to identify clinical factors that may influence neurological recovery in patients undergoing surgery for cervical myelopathy in our work setting. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective analytical study on patients operated on for cervical myelopathy at the teaching hospital of Bouake. The logistic regression model was used to identify the factors influencing post-operative neurological recovery. Results: 50 patients’ records have been enrolled in this study. The mean age of our patients was 53 years with extremes ranging from 25 to 78 years and 39 of our patients (62%) were male. The mean modified pre-operative JOA score was 11.62 versus 12.94 after the surgery. Age, sex, the number of levels operated on and the duration of the evolution of the signs showed no significant link with neurological recovery. Preoperative mild myelopathy (P = 0.0491) and post-operative functional rehabilitation (P = 0.0459) were identified as factors favouring neurological recovery after cervical myelopathy surgery. Conclusion: The good conducts of functional rehabilitation sessions as well as a mild myelopathy were the factors favouring neurological recovery.
