Specific heat(Cp)and effective thermal conductivity(λ)of native maize starch(NS)were measured by DSC and transient heat transfer method,respectively,at different moisture contents and *** dependency of temperature(T)and moisture content(W)on the two parameters were *** thermophysical properties of treated starch(TS)by four hydrothermal processes(RP-HMT,IV-HMT,DV-HMT and FV-HMT)were measured and compared to native *** treatments were performed at 3 bars(133°C)for 10 *** Cp andλmeasurements,moisture content varied for NS from 5 to 21.5%*** from 8.8 to 25%d.b.,respectively,and was fixed at 6%*** *** models were developed to specific heat and effective thermal conductivity,using a multiple regression algorithm with subsequent statistical *** proposed models for NS based on T and W predict Cp andλwith a mean absolute error of 3.5%and 1.3%,*** differences in specific heat were observed between TS and *** a temperature range of 40 to 160°C,Cp values varied from 1.964 to 2.699 for NS and 1.380 to 2.085(J.g-1.°C-1)for *** contrast,the conductivity of NS was almost identical to that of treated starch by FV-HMT,followed in an increasing order by those treated by DV-HMT,RP-HMT,and IV-HM processes.

The invasive multicolored Asian ladybeetle, Harmonia axyridis （Pallas）（Coleoptera： Coceinellidae）, aggregates inside dwellings during winter to avoid cold weather. This adaptive behavior disturbs homeowners, because of the large numbers of individuals that aggregate, which induces allergic reactions. The migratory flight patterns of this species have been well documented, with individuals preferentially moving toward prominent and high color contrast elements. However, the factors involved in the selection of aggregation sites by this species have yet to be elucidated. Here, we evaluated the influ- ence of （i） the density of individuals and （ii） the type of available shelters on decisions by H. axyridis to settle and aggregate under shelters. A dual choice bioassay conducted in the laboratory demonstrated the presence of mutual attraction to conspecifics. We also found that individuals preferentially settled under red covered shelters compared to transparent shelters, and that the type of shelter outweighed the effect of social interactions among conspecifics. Moreover, this experiment was performed under non-wintering conditions, providing the first evidence that aggregative behavior in this species can also occur under those specific conditions.

Improved photoconductive properties of composite nanofibers based on aligned conjugated polymer and single-walled carbon nanotubes

We successfully address the challenge of aligning single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and conjugated polymer chains in composite nanofibers for enhancing their opto-electrical properties. A pore-filling template strategy has been developed to prepare such nanocomposites from SWNTs and poly(para-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) chains, with both species well-oriented aligned along the pore axis. Addition of the SWNTs leads to a remarkable increase in photocurrent of four orders of magnitude as compared to equivalent pristine PPV nanofibers. Further analysis indicates that the strong photocurrent enhancement is not simply an effect of alignment, but additionally benefits from alignment-enhanced interaction of polymer chains with SWNTs, as supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.
