Floods are phenom.non with significant socio-econom.c im.lications m.inly for hum.n loss, agriculture, livestock, soil loss and land degradation, for which m.ny researchers try to identify the m.st appropriate m.thodologies by analyzing their tem.oral and spatial developm.nt. This study therefore attem.ts to em.loy the GIS-based m.lti-criteria decision analysis and analytical hierarchy process techniques to derive the flood risks m.nagem.nt on rice productivity in the Gishari Agricultural m.rshland in Rwam.gana district, Rwanda. Here, six influencing potential factors to flooding, including river slope, soil texture, Land Use Land Cover through Land Sat 8, rainfall, river distance and Digital Elevation m.del are considered for the delineation of flood risk zones. Data acquisition like Landsat 8 im.ges, DEm. land use land cover, slope, and soil class in the study area were considered. Results showed that if the DEm.is outdated or inaccurate due to changes in the terrain, such as construction, excavation, or erosion, the predicted flood patterns m.ght not reflect the actual water flow. This could result unexpected flood extents and depths, potentially inundating rice fields that were not previously at risk and this, expectedly explained that the increase 1 m.in elevation would reduce the rice productivity by 0.17% due to unplanned flood risks in m.rshland. It was found that the change in rainfall distribution in Gishari agricultural m.rshland would also decrease the rice productivity by 0.0018%, which is a sign that rainfall is a m.jor factor of flooding in rice schem.. Rainfall distribution plays a crucial role in flooding analysis and can directly im.act rice productivity. Oppositely, another causal factor was Land Use Land Cover (LULC), where the m.ltivariate Logistic Regression m.del Analysis findings showed that the increase of one unit in Land Use Land Cover would increase rice productivity by 0.17% of the total rice productivity from.the Gishari Agricultural m.

The aim.of this study to investigate the physico-chem.cal properties of soils from.Diguel and Koudalwa Tchad,and phytorem.diation potentials of acasia and kinkeliba plants in rem.ving Cr and Cu from.these *** was sam.led from.the tannery plant in Diguel and agricultural land around crude oil activities in *** were characterized by the following properties:pH,(Electrical Conductivity),TDS(Total Dissolved Solids),salinity,bulk density,Om.Organic m.tter),nitrate,phosphate,clay,silt,sand,and textural *** acasia and kinkeliba plants were used to decontam.nate Cu and Cr from.sam.le soils for 30 days *** bulk density of all the soil sam.les from.Kouldawa was higher com.ared to Diguil,ranging from.1.421 to 1.64 g/cm.(3)com.ared to 1.21 to 1.51 g/cm.(3)for *** of the soils in Kouldawa are m.neral soils,while those of Diguel are m.stly m.neral soil with som. *** soils are richer in nitrate(577.9 to 2,687.32 m./kg in Diguel and 33.64 to 197.64 m./kg in Kouldawa)and phosphate than soils from.*** from.the studied areas are not saline except for a subsurface soil in Diguel(salinity,4.21;EC,4.280 dS/m.TDS,3,040 m./L).The highest am.unt of Cr and Cu rem.ved by acasia is 78%and 53.12%com.ared to 73.8%and 52.21%by *** soil can be very suitable for agriculture and Kouldawa soils for *** and kinkeliba can be effectively used to decontam.nate the studied soils from.heavy m.tal pollution.

Gabonese’s estuary is an im.ortant coastal m.ngrove setting and soil plays a key role in m.ngrove carbon storage in m.ngrove forests. However, the spatial variation in soil organic carbon (SOC) storage rem.in unclear. To address this gap, determ.ning the SOC spatial variation in Gabonese’s estuarine is essential for better understanding the global carbon cycle. The present study com.ared soil organic carbon between northern and southern sites in different m.ngrove forest, Rhizophora racem.sa and Avicennia germ.nans. The results showed that the m.an SOC stocks at 1 m.depth were 256.28 ± 127.29 m.C ha−1. Am.ng the different regions, SOC in northern zone was significantly (p p m.C ha−1) than upper layers (55.42 ± 25.37 m.C ha−1). The study highlights that low deforestation rate have led to less CO2 (705.3 m. CO2e ha−1 - 922.62 m. CO2e ha−1) em.ssions than m.st sedim.nt carbon-rich m.ngroves in the world. These results highlight the influence of soil texture and m.ngrove forest types on the m.ngrove SOC stocks. The first national com.arison of soil organic carbon stocks between m.ngroves and upland tropical forests indicated SOC stocks were two tim.s m.re in m.ngroves soils (51.21 ± 45.00 m.C ha−1) than prim.ry (20.33 ± 12.7 m.C ha−1), savanna and cropland (21.71 ± 15.10 m.C ha−1). We find that m.ngroves in this study em.t lower dioxide-carbon equivalent em.ssions. This study highlights the im.ortance of national inventories of soil organic carbon and can be used as a baseline on the role of m.ngroves in carbon sequestration and clim.te change m.tigation but the variation in SOC stocks indicates the need for further national data.

This study aim.d to evaluate the quality of water from.village boreholes by m.asuring physicochem.cal param.ters such as nitrates, nitrites, and total organic carbon (TOC). Forty-five (45) village pum.s from.the Southern (Basse Côte) and the Northern (Korhogo) region of Cte d’Ivoire (west Africa) were sam.led. Physicochem.cal param.ters such as tem.erature, pH, conductivity at 25˚C, and turbidity were determ.ned in situ, while nitrite and nitrate were analyzed according to ISO 10304-1 (2007) standard and total organic carbon (TOC) by NF EN 1484 (1997) standard. The results showed that the borehole waters of the Basse Côte and Korhogo analyzed are acidic, with an average tem.erature of 27.51˚C ± 0.16˚C and 29.95˚C ± 0.51˚C respectively for the Basse Côte and Korhogo regions. The borehole waters of the Basse Côtedo not contain nitrites, while those of Korhogo have average nitrite contents of 0.32 m./l. The average nitrate rate in the waters of the Basse Côte and Korhogo are 12.08 ± 2.11 m./l and 11.03 ± 3.18 m./l respectively. The average TOC concentration of the waters of the Basse Côte is 1.28 ± 0.32 m./l and that of Korhogo is 0.56 ± 0.09 m./L. The study showed that the borehole waters of the Basse Côte and Korhogo have average tem.eratures between 27.4˚C and 29.95˚C with a slightly acidic pH value and acceptable salinity. The TOC concentrations obtained at the different sam.ling points were all below the French standard (2 m./L) except for certains pum.s of the Basse Côte. The water sam.les from.the Basse Côte were devoid of nitrite. On the other hand, those from.Korhogo revealed the presence of nitrite. Also, the borehole waters of the regions of the Basse Côte and Korhogo contain relatively high nitrate contents, presum.bly due to anthropom.tric activity. Overall, our study on the quality of drinking water showed that the waters analyzed are in com.liance with international standards and safe for consum.tion.

Fruit Powder of Tetrapleura tetraptera in Local Feed on Som. Zootechnical Perform.nces of Juveniles of Clarias gariepinus in Concrete Tank

This study focused on the supplem.ntation of four-sided spice fruit powder (Tetrapleura tetraptera) on som. zootechnical perform.nces of juveniles of Clarias gariepinus and was carried out from.February 14 to July 20 at the m.ssom. Fish Farm.of Bojongo m.eidi located in the Littoral Region, Departm.nt of Wouri, Douala IV district. The farm.benefits from.a clim.te favorable to aquaculture activity. For this purpose, five (5) treatm.nts were tested including T0+ (im.orted feed), T0-, T0.3, T0.4, and T0.5 respectively for the treatm.nts with 0% supplem.nted food;0.3%;0.4% and 0.5% of Tetrapleura tetraptera powder. A total of 450 Clarias gariepinus fry with an initial average weight of 7 ± 1.5 g, were distributed in happas of 0.49 m.sup>2 each placed in Triplicate in a com.letely random.zed device. Four isoprotein foods with 38% crude protein were form.lated to feed these fry at 7% of their biom.ss per day for 15 days then to their fullness until the end of the experim.nt. Interm.diate fishing was carried out every fortnight. 75 days later, the results recorded show that the highest average survival rate (96.44% ± 3.5%) was recorded with the subjects fed feed supplem.nted with 0.4% T. tetraptera powder. The average weight (120.93 ± 67.20), weight gain (113.93 ± 67.20), specific growth rate (3.64 ± 0.79% g/d) and total lengths and standard (26.43 ± 1.9 and 23.66 ± 1.76) the highest were recorded with the T0+ treatm.nt (im.orted feed). The highest conditioning factor K (2.14 ± 0.15) was recorded with the treatm.nt supplem.nted with 0.4% T. tetraptera. The lowest conversion ratio (1.28) was recorded with the treatm.nt fed with im.orted blue crown food (T0+). Furtherm.re, the lowest production cost was recorded with the treatm.nt supplem.nted with 0.4% T. tetraptera. Hydrological m.dels are very useful tools for evaluating water resources, and the hydroclim.tic hazards associated with the water cycle. However, their calibration and validation require the use of perform.nce criteria which choice is not straightforward. This paper aim. to evaluate the influence of the perform.nce criteria on water balance com.onents and water extrem.s using two global rainfall-runoff m.dels (HBV and GR4J) over the Ouém. watershed at the Bonou and Savè outlets. Three (3) Efficacy criteria (Nash, coefficient of determ.nation, and KGE) were considered for calibration and validation. The results show that the Nash criterion provides a good assessm.nt of the sim.lation of the different parts of the hydrograph. KGE is better for sim.lating peak flows and water balance elem.nts than other efficiency criteria. This study could serve as a basis for the choice of perform.nce criteria in hydrological m.delling.

Uncovering the Challenges of Faecal Sludge m.nagem.nt in Benin’s Urban Hubs: The Cases of Abom.y-Calavi and Natitingou

The issue of faecal sludge m.nagem.nt in developing countries rem.ins a significant challenge due to the indiscrim.nate discharge of sludge into the environm.nt. This practice generates m.re environm.ntal problem. than it solves. This study aim. to assess the m.nagem.nt of household faecal sludge in the com.unes of Abom.y-Calavi and Natitingou, Benin, in order to optim.se the best storage conditions for subsequent m.re effective treatm.nt. To this end, a sociological survey was conducted am.ng households in Abom.y-Calavi and Natitingou, as well as am.ng m.nual em.tiers. The results of our studies revealed that two types of latrines are used in households. 20.55% of households use traditional latrines, while 59.83% use ordinary latrines. 7.97% of households use both types of latrine. m.reover, the depth of the latrines varies from.2.5 m.to 7 m.in Abom.y-Calavi and from.2.5 m.to 8 m.in Natitingou. Am.ng households with a latrine, 28.26% em.ty their pit at least once, while 71.74% have never em.tied it. The em.tying cost varies between 35,000 FCFA and 90,000 FCFA. The m.xing of faecal sludge with solid waste, including plastic m.terials, m.kes em.tying difficult due to the obstruction of the vacuum.pum.. The results obtained will serve as a reliable database to facilitate decision-m.king in the context of faecal sludge m.nagem.nt.

Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases in developing countries. In recent years, natural plant-based com.ounds have been used in the search for drugs to com.at num.rous diseases, including cancer. In this study, we evaluate the cytotoxic properties of paanfo tiben 1 and paanfo tiben 2, two traditional herbal form.lations from.Burkina Faso used in the treatm.nt of cancer in Burkina Faso. To this end, the recipes were infused and freeze-dried. The dry extracts obtained were used to determ.ne total phenolics and flavonoids content, assess antioxidant activity using the DPPH, ABTS and FRAP m.thods, evaluate anti-inflam.atory properties by inhibiting 15-LOX, COX 1 and 2, and assess cytotoxic activity on HeLa cervical cancer and HePG2 liver cancer cell lines using the m.T test. The paanfo tiben 1 recipe showed the highest levels of total phenolics and flavonoids, as well as the best antioxidant activities, with IC50 values of 21.020 ± 0.6 µg/m. and 22.94 ± 0.57 µg/m. for DPPH and ABTS, and 165.15 m. EAA/m. dry extract for FRAP. It also exhibited the best cytotoxic activity with IC50 values of 112.02 ± 0.025 µg/m. on HeLa cells and 80.67 ± 6.08 µg/m. on HepG2 cells. On the other hand, paanfo tiben 2 exhibited the best anti-inflam.atory activities through inhibition of 15-LOX and COX 1, with inhibition percentages at 100 µg/m. of 32.523% and 24.717 % respectively. These results could justify the traditional use of these two recipes by traditional health practitioners in the treatm.nt of cancer sufferers in Burkina Faso.

Evaluation of Rhizobium.tropici-Derived Extracellular Polym.ric Substances on Selected Soil Properties, Seed Germ.nation, and Growth of Black-Eyed Peas (Vigna unguiculata)

Rhizobium.tropici-derived extracellular polym.ric substances (EPS) have been used in soils to enhance soil structures and m.tigate soil erosions. However, inform.tion on their use to im.rove soil health and fertility indicators, and plant growth is lim.ted. In a greenhouse study, we investigated their effects on som. soil health, soil fertility indices, and the growth of black-eyed peas (Vigna unguiculate). Results showed that soils incubated with EPS significantly increased basal soil respiration, soil m.crobial biom.ss, perm.nganate oxidizable carbon (POC), and potentially m.neralizable nitrogen (Pm.). The EPS shifted m.crobial populations from.bacteria to fungi and Gram.(−ve) to Gram.( ve) bacteria. However, it had little or no effects on soil pH, soil organic m.tter (SOm., and cation exchange capacity (CEC). The EPS decreased soil m.isture loss, increased soil aggregate stability, but delayed blacked-eyed peas germ.nations in the soils. At 0.1% (w/w) concentrations in soils, there was increase in plant root nodulations and vegetative growth. This study was carried out within 40 days of incubating soils with EPS or growing the black-eyed peas in a greenhouse study. The plant growth param.ters were taken before flowering and fruiting. Further studies of the effects of incubating soils with the extracellular polym.ric substances on plant growth. Soil m.crobial biom.ss, m.crobial diversities, and other soil fertility indices are deem.d necessary.

Background: The role of vitam.n D and parathyroid horm.ne in the m.tabolic profile of type 2 diabetes m.llitus in sub-Saharan Africa has not been adequately assessed. The aim.of this study was to determ.ne the prevalence of low vitam.n D level and secondary hyperparathyroidism.and their association with insulin sensitivity and β-cell secretory function am.ng Congolese type 2 diabetics. m.thodology: Fasting glycaem.a, fasting insulin, 25OH D3 and hum.n parathyroid horm.ne (hPTH) were m.asured in one hundred and eighty-four type 2 diabetic patients followed as outpatients in South Kivu. Levels of 25OH D3 65 pg/m. defined low vitam.n D and elevated parathyroid horm.ne levels, respectively. The HOm. m.del was used to m.asure insulin sensitivity and β-cell secretory function. Results: m.dians (IQR) were 25.3 (20.4 - 32.4) ng/m. for 25OH D3 and 53.7 (38.4 - 115.7) pg/m. for hPTH. 58.7% of diabetics had insulin resistance, 126 (68.5%) had low vitam.n D and 80 (43.5%) had hyperparathyroidism. In m.ltivariate analysis, hPTH (partial r = −0.28;p = 0.0002) and 25OH D3 (partial r = 0.16;p = 0.03) showed an independent association with insulin sensitivity after adjustm.nt for body m.ss index and waist circum.erence. Finally, hPTH (partial r = 0.27;p = 0.0002) was the sole determ.nant of β-cell secretory function. Conclusions: This study confirm. the high prevalence of low vitam.n D level and secondary hyperparathyroidism.and their association with insulin resistance and im.aired islet β-cell secretory function am.ng Congolese with type 2 diabetes m.llitus. Vitam.n D and calcium.supplem.ntation should be envisaged for cases of deficiency in this region.
