Runoff and losses of nutrients and herbicides under long-term conservation practices (no-till and crop rotation) in the U.S. Midwest:A variable intensity simulated rainfall approach

The U.S. Farm Bill includes conservation practices that benefit both the environment and the farmer. The USDA Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) is a multi-agency effort to assess the efficiency of conservation practices to minimize non-point source pollution. This is follow-up study of a 28-year experiment design to assess the influence of the conservation practices of no-till and crop rotation systems (corn [Zea mays]-soybean [Glycine max]), compared to chisel tillage and monocropping systems (continuous corn) on soil health and water quality. In this study, changes on soil C and N, soil water content, runoff, and losses of ammonium-N, nitrate-N, soluble reactive P (SRP), atrazine, metolachlor, and glyphosate were compared to determine the influence of no-till and corn-soybean rotation systems, relative to chisel tillage and continuous corn, on plots planted with corn using variable intensity rainfall simulations. The long-term no-till systems had a positive impact on soil C and N, soil water, runoff, and losses of ammonium-N and nitrate-N;however, no effect was observed on losses of SRP, atrazine, metolachlor, and glyphosate. The corn-soybean rotation negatively influenced, compared to the continuous corn, soil C and N, soil water content, and increased runoff and the losses of all nutrients and herbicides measured in this study. These results suggest that additional conservation practices, in conjunction with no-till and corn-soybean rotations are needed to reduce surface losses of nutrients and pesticides while improving soil health.

Polygynous males can change their mating tactics across their lifetime, but information is scarce on the flexibility of this trait within a given season and the relative costs and benefits of using different tactics. Here, we monitored individually marked male reindeer Rangifer tarandus and classified their mating tactics as harem-defense, sneaking, or mixed. The costs of the male reproductive effort were assessed using both direct （i.e. percentage of body mass lost） and indirect measures （i.e. activity patterns such as feeding, standing, and walking）, while mating group size and reproductive success were recorded as mating ef- fort benefits. Our results show that reindeer males may switch between the harem-defense and sneaking tactics throughout the same breeding season, providing further support to the notion that reproductive tactics are flexible in ungulates. The costs and benefits of male mating effort vary according to the mating tactic, reaching the highest values in harem-holders and the lowest values in sneaking males. Moreover, males who switched between the sneaking tactic and the harem-defence tactic tended to achieve higher mating success than males who consistently used the least costly tactic. Indeed, all harem-holders successfully sired offspring, whereas only two out of three mixed-tactic males sired one calf, and sneaking males did not sire any calves. In conclusion, our results show that reindeer males can modulate their mating efforts during the same breeding season by switching between the most costly harem-defense tactic and the least costly sneaking tactic, suggesting individual solutions to the balance between reproductive effort and mating opportunities [Current Zoology 61 （5）： 802-810, 2015].

Atrazine removal from water by activated charcoal cloths

Pollution control structures may be adapted to enhance the removal of nutrients and pesticides from water. Charcoal-like material is known to sorb organic compounds in solution, including atrazine, a herbicide used to control broadleaf weeds, which persists in soils and can migrate from soils to water bodies, ultimately affecting water quality. The primary goal of this study was to investigate if activated charcoal cloths (single-weave, SW;double-weave, DW;and knitted, KT) are more efficient to remove atrazine from aqueous solutions than a cloth without activated charcoal (control) currently used in pollution control structures. The approach consisted of sorption kinetics, flow-through, and desorption/degradation experiments using 50 and 1000μg L-1 atrazine solutions. Results showed that within 30 min of contact time, the control sorbed from 22.6 to 36.1% of atrazine in solution;whereas the activated charcoal cloths sorbed from 76 to 99% of atrazine in solution (SW > KT > DW). The flow-through ex-periments showed that the SW sorbed 88.2, 76.1, and 52.2%of atrazine at the contact time of 0.75, 5, and 10 min, respectively. After 28 days of incubation, previously sorbed atrazine on the SW cloth did not degrade and <2.0% was desorbed. The results showed that activated charcoal cloths are a practical alternative for improving atrazine removal in water in pollution control structures.

This study tested whether osseous integration into poly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL)bioplastic scaffolds with fully-interconnecting 155±8μm pores is enhanced by an adhesive,non-inflammatory 99% degree of deacetylation(DDA)chitosan coating(99-PCL),or further incorporation of pro-inflammatory 83% DDA chitosan microparticles(83-99-PCL)to accelerate *** Zealand White rabbit osteochondral knee defects were press-fit with PCL,99-PCL,83-99-PCL,or allowed to bleed(drill-only).Between day 1 and 6 weeks of repair,drill-only defects repaired by endochondral ossification,with an 8-fold higher bone volume fraction(BVF)versus initial defects,compared to a 2-fold(99-PCL),1.1-fold(PCL),or 0.4-fold(83-99-PCL)change in *** innate immune cells swarmed to 83-99-PCL,elicited angiogenesis throughout the pores and induced slight bone *** and 99-PCL pores were variably filled with cartilage or avascular mesenchyme near the bone plate,or angiogenic mesenchyme into which repairing trabecular bone infiltrated up to 1 mm *** repair cartilage covered the 99-PCL scaffold(65%)than PCL(18%)or 83-99-PCL(0%)(p<0.005).We report the novel finding that non-inflammatory chitosan coatings promoted cartilage infiltration into and over a bioplastic scaffold,and were compatible with trabecular bone *** study also revealed that in vitro osteogenesis assays have limited ability to predict osseous integration into porous scaffolds,because(1)in vivo,woven bone integrates from the leading edge of regenerating trabecular bone and not from mesenchymal cells adhering to scaffold surfaces,and(2)bioactive coatings that attract inflammatory cells induce bone resorption.

Objective:We describe the first-year implementation experience of an Instrumented Sensory Integration Therapy Program in Audiological&Balance Center ***:This is a retrospective descriptive *** included Seventy-three adults with diagnoses of acute,episodic,or chronic vestibular *** were classified into the following two groups:group 1 included 46 individuals treated with ISIT plus VRT,and group 2 included 27 individuals treated only with ***:The Sensory Organization Test(SOT)for both groups showed a statistical significance for all three sensory inputs;visual systems(G1:p=0.0003;G2:p=0.0337),vestibular system(G1:p<0.0001;G2:p=0.0003),and balance as demonstrated by compound balance score(G1:p<0.0001;G2:p=0.0035),and balance percentage deficit(G1:p<0.0001;G2:p=0.0078).Conclusions:The severity and complexity of functional neurological disorders in the context of vestibular syndromes seem to require between 10 and 20 therapy sessions,and combined ISIT plus VRT appears to be more effective than ISIT as a monotherapy.

出于对这篇论文所涉及话题以及撰写人能力及各方面因素的综合考量，我认为很有必要在此基础上创建一个项目，以向读者证实它的务实性和实用性。换句话说，我认为它不应只具有学术用途，而是同时具备在实际商务操作中的参考或指南作用。因此我将论文题目定为：论外国企业家在中国面临的挑战。通过相关调查以及对一些在中国生活过一段时间的外籍人士的访谈后发现，对于年轻的外籍企业家来讲，很显然，在中国进行贸易的最大挑战来自于文化差异，在此基础上贸易如何开展以及如何运行。虽然这个问题看上去笼统且显而易见，但是实际上它却可以细分至许多层面。它涉及到许多不同的因素，语言、文化、风俗、实际知识、刻板印象等等。在快节奏不断变化的世界中，重要的是能够直接从源头获取信息，从而揭示被人们忽略的认为是无关的因素。日常生活中的挑战在此会得到检验，从而为那些企业家提供更加具体形象的概念而不是简单的宏观数据或者是一些带有成见的见解。在这个项目中，所有相关因素会被有顺序的发掘研究从而显示这些个体带有何种挑战性而不是只简单的设立一个商业项目，它更需要通过日常操作才能得到不断前行、成长以至获得成功。

Conservation practices are encouraged to improve soil health and sustain agronomic crop ***-3 is often used as a multi-nutrient extractant to determine soil fertility status.A study inves-tigated the impacts of the conservation practices of gypsum,cover crops,and crop rotation on 28 Mehlich-3 extractable elements,of which 11 were considered plant nutrients,from soil at three mid-western US *** was collected from 0 to 15 and 15-30 cm depths 5 years after implementing the conservation *** consisted of(1)with and without cereal rye(Secale cereale L.)winter cover,(2)continuous soybean[Glycine max(L.)Merr.]***-corn(Zea mays L.)rotation,and(3)annual gypsum application(0,1.1,and 2.2 Mg ha-1).Differences were observed by site,depth,and conservation practice depending on the element *** interactive effects were observed among *** most consistent effect was observed for crop rotation across *** only affected the site with the greatest clay content,where more Ca and S were retained,and Mg and Mn *** crop only affected elements at this high clay site,where different elements were positively or negatively *** suggest that not one practice fits all,and optimum conservation practices must be tailored for the site.

Atrazine Sorption by Biochar, Tire Chips, and Steel Slag as Media for Blind Inlets: A Kinetic and Isotherm Sorption Approach

Surface inlets are installed in subsurface drainage systems to reduce ponding duration and surface runoff, but can contribute to water quality concerns by allowing water to directly enter buried drains. Blind inlets consist of perforated pipes covered with gravel and are separated from an overlying sand layer by a geotextile membrane and have been shown to be more effective in reducing losses of sediment, nutrients, and pesticides than typical tile line risers. In this study, we investigated whether the effectiveness of blind inlets to sorb pollutants, with emphasis on the herbicide atrazine, could be further improved by amended them with materials other than limestone. The media, shredded tires (tire chips), electric arc steel furnace slag (steel slag), and oak-derived biochar were chosen because they are readily available, inexpensive, and do not present environmental concerns. Kinetic sorption and isotherms were determined to ascertain atrazine sorption by these materials, in addition to testing for potential metal leaching using the Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure (SPLP) and the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). The kinetic data were fitted using pseudo first- and second-order reaction equations and indicated that atrazine sorption rate was 38 times faster and equilibrium was reached 5 times earlier for biochar than tire chips. The 24-h sorption isotherm data were fitted to the Freundlich sorption equation. The sorption coefficient for biochar was higher than for tire chips, steel slag, and limestone. Per the SPLC and TLCP tests, there was no leaching of heavy metals at levels of environmental concern. Our results suggested that the effectiveness of blind inlets as well as other conservation practices that include filter media such as rain gardens and filter socks could be improved by incorporating more reactive materials than sand and gravel with biochar being a particularly effective alternative.
