Siderophore-Producing Rhizobacteria as a Promising Tool for Empowering Plants to Cope with Iron Limitation in Saline Soils:A Review

Iron(Fe) bioavailability to plants is reduced in saline soils;however, the exact mechanisms underlying this effect are not yet completely understood. Siderophore-expressing rhizobacteria may represent a promising alternative to chemical fertilizers by simultaneously tackling salt-stress effects and Fe limitation in saline soils. In addition to draught, plants growing in arid soils face two other major challenges: high salinity and Fe deficiency. Salinity attenuates growth, affects plant physiology, and causes nutrient imbalance,which is, in fact, one of the major consequences of saline stress. Iron is a micronutrient essential for plant development, and it is required by several metalloenzymes involved in photosynthesis and respiration. Iron deficiency is associated with chlorosis and low crop productivity. The role of microbial siderophores in Fe supply to plants and the effect of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria(PGPR) on the mitigation of saline stress in crop culture are well documented. However, the dual effect of siderophore-producing PGPR, both on salt stress and Fe limitation, is still poorly explored. This review provides a critical overview of the combined effects of Fe limitation and soil salinization as challenges to modern agriculture and intends to summarize some indirect evidence that argues in favour of siderophore-producing PGPR as biofertilization agents in salinized soils. Recent developments and future perspectives on the use of PGPR are discussed as clues to sustainable agricultural practices in the context of present and future climate change scenarios.

New-onset diabetes after kidney transplantation:Incidence and associated factors

AIM To determine the incidence and associated factors of new-onset diabetes after transplantation(NODAT) in a Portuguese central hospital. METHODS This single-center retrospective study involved consecutive adult nondiabetic transplant recipients, who had undergone kidney transplantation between January 2012 and March 2016. NODAT was diagnosed according to the criteria of the American Diabetes Association. Data were collected from an institutional database of the Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation Department(Santa maria Hospital, Lisbon, Portugal) and augmented with data of laboratorial parameters collected from the corresponding patient electronic medical records. Exclusion criteria were preexisting diabetes mellitus, missing information and follow-up period of less than 12 mo. Data on demographic and clinical characteristics as well as anthropometric and laboratorial parameters were also collected. Patients were divided into two groups: With and without NODAT-for statistical *** A total of 156 patients received kidney transplantduring the study period, 125 of who were included in our analysis. NODAT was identified in 27.2% of the patients(n = 34; 53% female; mean age: 49.5 ± 10.8 years; median follow-up: 36.4 ± 2.5 mo). The incidence in the first year was 24.8%. The median time to diagnosis was 3.68 ± 5.7 mo after transplantation, and 76.5% of the patients developed NODAT in the first 3 mo. In the group that did not develop NODAT(n = 91), 47% were female, with mean age of 46.4 ± 13.5 years and median follow-up of 35.5 ± 1.6 mo. In the NODAT group, the pretransplant fasting plasma glucose(FPG) levels were significantly higher [101(96.1-105.7) mg/d L vs 92(91.4-95.8) mg/d L, P = 0.007] and pretransplant impaired fasting glucose(IFG) was significantly more frequent(51.5% vs 27.7%, P = 0.01). Crop residues: applications of lignocellulosic biomass in the context of a biorefinery

Interest in lignocellulosic biomass conversion technologies has increased recently because of their potential to reduce the dependency on non-renewable feedstocks. Residues from a variety of crops are the major source of lignocellulose, which is being produced in increasingly large quantities worldwide. The commercial exploitation of crop residues as feedstocks for biorefineries which could be used to produce a variety of goods such as biofuels, biochemicals, bioplastics, and enzymes is an attractive approach not only for adding value to residues but also for providing renewable products required by the expanding bioeconomy market. Moreover, the implementation of biorefineries in different regions has the potential to add value to the specific crop residues produced in the region. In this review, several aspects of crop residue application in biorefineries are discussed, including the role of crop residues in the bioeconomy and circular economy concepts, the main technical aspects of crop residue conversion in biorefineries, the main crop residues generated in different regions of the world and their availability, the potential value-added bioproducts that can be extracted or produced from each crop residue, and the major advantages and challenges associated with crop residue utilization in biorefineries. Despite their potential, most biomass refining technologies are not sufficiently advanced or financially viable. Several technical obstacles, especially with regard to crop residue collection, handling, and pre-treatment, prevent the implementation of biorefineries on a commercial scale. Further research is needed to resolve these scale-up-related challenges. Increased governmental incentives and bioeconomic strategies are expected to boost the biorefinery market and the cost competitiveness of biorefinery products.

Drying of pasty and granular materials in mechanically and conventional spouted beds

A contactor vessel was built to operate as either a mechanically or a conventional spouted bed for the purpose of analyzing the drying of pasty and granular materials under comparable conditions in both configurations. A classical conical–cylindrical spouted bed with a 60° conical base and an air inlet central orifice was modified to enable the switch by introducing in the vessel’s center an open helicoidal conveyor screw placed above the air inlet orifice. This screw is removable and conveniently returns the bed to its conventional spouted configuration. Experiments on drying solutions (calcium carbonate suspensions and skimmed milk) and granular materials (porous alumina particles) were performed for various bed parameter settings. The spouting pressure drop, outlet air temperature, and relative humidity were measured over time under different conditions. Mechanical agitation is proved effective in drying diluted carbonate calcium liquid suspensions and coarse porous alumina particles at an air velocity approximately 50% lower in comparison to drying in a conventional spouted bed. The conventional spouted bed performed better at drying liquid skimmed milk as the mechanical agitation combined with the axial inlet air flow is not effective in mitigating sticking and powder agglomeration in the bed when handling pastes of complex composition. Introducing mechanical agitation in the designed setup broadens the operating range of a conventional spouted bed with axial air flow in the inlet.

In Vitro Evaluation of the Potential Antioxidant of Bidens segetum Mart. ex Colla (Asteraceae) in Melanocyte and Melanoma Cells

Bidens segetum Martius ex Colla known as the “picão do mato”, is an herbaceous plant that occurs in the Cerrado biome of some Brazilian states. Among the species of Bidens, we highlight B. pilosa known as “picão preto”, of which several activities are reported as antioxidant and antibacterial. Ethanolic extract from Bidens segetum (EEBs) showed an-tioxidant potential when analyzed by free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay and antifungal activity against Cladosporium cladosporiodes and C. sphareospermum fungi. PFFR3.3 subfraction from EEBs has 81.5% of 5-O caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA) and potential antioxidant (DPPH). However, PFFR3.3 did not decrease superoxide anion in metastatic melanoma cells by dihydroeth-idium assay (DHE). PP4 subfraction is a mixture of polyacetylenes that has antifungal (Cladosporium) and antioxidant activity, since reduced superoxide anion amount in melanoma cells after 5 min of treatment. However, no dose-response and time-response curve were observed, not even with the authentic standard (5-CQA). Complementary chemical studies will be performed to confirm the polyacetylenes and 5-CQA structures present in the EEBs from B. segetum and new methodologies should be performed to confirm the antioxidant activity of these com-pounds and the effects on melanocytes and melanomas.

Noninvasive methods for prediction of esophageal varices in pediatric patients with portal hypertension

AIM: To evaluate clinical and laboratory parameters for prediction of bleeding from esophageal varices (EV) in children with portal hypertension. METHODS: Retrospective study of 103 children (mean age: 10.1 ± 7.7 years), 95.1% with intrahepatic portal hypertension. All patients had no history of bleeding and underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy for EV screening. We recorded variceal size (F1, F2 and F3), red-color signs and portal gastropathy, according to the Japanese Research Society for Portal Hypertension classification. Patients were classified into two groups: with and without EV. Seven noninvasive markers were evaluated as potential predictors of EV: (1) platelet count; (2) spleen size z score, expressed as a standard deviation score relative to normal values for age; (3)platelet count to spleen size z score ratio; (4) platelets count to spleen size (cm) ratio; (5) the clinical prediction rule (CPR); (6) the aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index (APRI); and (7) the risk score. RESULTS: Seventy-one children had EV on first endoscopy. On univariate analysis, spleen size, platelets, CPR, risk score, APRI, and platelet count to spleen size z score ratio showed significant associations. The best noninvasive predictors of EV were platelet count [area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) 0.82; 95%CI: 0.73-0.91], platelet: spleen size z score (AUROC 0.78; 95%CI: 0.67-0.88), CPR (AUROC 0.77; 95%CI: 0.64-0.89), and risk score (AUROC 0.77; 95%CI: 0.66-0.88). A logistic regression model was applied with EV as the dependent variable and corrected by albumin, bilirubin and spleen size z score. Children with a CPR 114. A risk score > -1.2 increased the likelihood of EV (odds ratio 7.47; 95%CI: 2.06-26.99). Health Care System in Portugal for People with Motor Problems

Purpose: From a social and labor inclusion perspective, the article presents a digital prototype conceptualized to provide a “Diagnostic Page”, which delivers various prescribers and suppliers of support products that mitigate the problems of the respective patients. It also provides a “Patient Card Page”, where all the information about financing the respective products is placed, as well as all the documents likely to be needed for the commercial transactions to be carried out by all the parties involved. It also aims to provide a digital medium to grow a community in this niche market. In the action research methodology approach, the prototype was taken to funding competitions and conferences, where interviews and surveys were carried out, and a number of suggestions were collected on the type of platform to consider in order to respond to the concerns and needs of end users, such as patients, prescribers, suppliers and associations. Methods: The digital platform where the system is hosted uses algorithms that, on the diagnostic page, consider keywords used by patients and return a series of prescribers and suppliers of support products, in which the corresponding percentage of attenuation is taken into account and the best solution found to overcome the level of difficulty presented by the respective patients is delivered. Results and Conclusions: It is hoped that, with this platform, people with motor problems will be able to obtain their diagnosis instantly, through the algorithm implemented, and that they will immediately be provided with a series of prescribers, suppliers and support products best suited to their needs, as well as all the information or conditions necessary to purchase or finance them. On the other hand, prescribers, suppliers and associations have an online platform where they can offer their consultations, products and other support as freelancers who are part of a community.

Sub-chronic effects of a Phthirusa pyrifolia aqueous extract on reproductive function and comparative hormone levels in male rats

Objective: To explore the effects of aqueous extract from Phthirusa pyrifolia leaves(67 mg/kg body weight for 12 days) on the reproductive function of male Wistar rats through oral ***: Animals(n = 30), aged 13 weeks and weighing(378.5 ± 5.0) g, were housed in a vivarium under controlled environmental conditions [photoperiod of 12 h light/dark,temperature of(23 ± 1)C] and were fed standard rations ad libitum. The experiment ran for 12 days, wherein animals were divided into three groups: negative control(n = 6)received water, positive control(n = 12) with finasteride at a concentration of 1.0 mg/kg;and a test group(n = 12) submitted to aqueous extract. At the end of the experiment, the animals were sacrificed and submitted to ***: The morphological results of the testes showed that the aqueous extract induced significant changes in the diameter and cross-sectional area of the seminiferous tubules as well as the thickness of the seminiferous epithelium. Furthermore, the extract was able to abruptly decrease testosterone concentrations by about 81.88% in the treated group when compared with the negative control,(47.0 ± 4.8) ng/d L and(255.0 ± 2.0) ng/d L,respectively, and 76.8%,(211.0 ± 8.7) ng/d L, when compared with finasteride. However,the extract causes neither liver damage nor impairment of renal ***: These results suggest that the high amounts of flavonoids shown to be in the extract may be responsible for its hepato-protective effects and suggest a possible decrease in the libido and reproduction of rats.

Increased hepatic expression of insulin-like growth factor-Ⅰreceptor in chronic hepatitis C

AIM： Although increased insulin-like growth factor-I receptor （IGF-IR） gene expression has been reported in hepatocellular carcinoma, studies assessing IGF-IR in chronic hepatitis C （CHC） and cirrhosis are scarce. We therefore aimed to evaluate IGF-IR and IGF-I rnRNA expression in liver from patient with CHC. METHODS： IGF-IR and IGF-I rnRNA content were determined by semi-quantitative RT-PCR and IGF-IR protein expression was determined by immunohistochemistry in hepatic tissue obtained from patients with CHC before （34 patients） and after （10 patients） therapy with interferon-α and ribavirin. RESULTS： An increase of IGF-IR rnRNA content was observed in hepatic tissue obtained from all CHC patients as well as from 6 cadaveric liver donors following orthopic transplantation （an attempt to evaluate normal livers） in comparison to normal liver, while no relevant modifications were detected in IGF-I mRNA content. The irnrnunohistochemical results showed that the raise in IGF-IR rnRNA content was related both to ductular reaction and to increased IGF-IR expression in hepatocytes. A decrease in IGF-IR rnRNA content was observed in patients who achieved sustained virological response after therapy, suggesting an improvement in hepatic damage. CONCLUSION： The up-regulation of IGF-IR expression in hepatocytes of patients with CHC could constitute an attempt to stimulate hepatocyte regeneration. Considering that liver is the organ with the highest levels of IGF-I, our finding of increased IGF-IR expression after both acute and chronic hepatic damage highlights the need for additional studies to elucidate the role of IGF-I in liver regeneration.

AIM： To investigate the relationship between the -765G 〉 C COX-2 polymorphism and the development of different gastric lesions： atrophy or intestinal metaplasia and gastric adenocarcinoma. METHODS： A cross-sectional study was performed involving 320 Portuguese individuals （210 without evidence of neoplastic disease, 73 patients with gastric adenocarcinomas and 37 with atrophy or intestinal metaplasia） using a PCR-RFLP method.RESULTS： -765C allele was overrepresented in the patients with gastric adenocarcinoma （51%） when compared either with the control group （38%） or patients with atrophy or intestinal metaplasia （27%）. Callele was found to be very common in our population （0.22）, and a multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed nearly 3-fold increased risk for the progression to gastric adenocarcinoma in patients with atrophy or intestinal metaplasia carrying the -765C allele （OR = 2.67, 95% CI = 1.03-6.93; P = 0.04）.CONCLUSION： -765C carrier status should be considered as another susceptibility marker for gastric adenocarcinoma development in patients with atrophy or intestinal metaplasia.
