AiM:To study whether selected bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA(rRNA)gene phylotypes are capable of disting- uishing irritable bowel syndrome(iBS). METHODS:The faecal microbiota of twenty volunteers with iBS,subdivided into eight diarrhoea-predominant (iBS-D),eight constipation-predominant(iBS-C)and four mixed symptom-subtype(iBS-M)iBS patients,and fifteen control subjects,were analysed at three time-points with a set of fourteen quantitative real-timepolymerase chain reaction *** assays targeted 16S rRNA gene phylotypes putatively associated with iBS,based on 16S rRNA gene library sequence analysis. The target phylotypes were affiliated with Actinobac-teria,Bacteroidetes and *** of the target phylotypes had less than 95%similarity to cultured bacterial species according to their 16S rRNA gene *** data analyses were made with repeated-measures ANCOVA-type modelling of the data and principle component analysis(PCA)with linear mixed-effects models applied to the principal component scores. RESULTS:Bacterial phylotypes Clostridium cocleatum 88%,Clostridium thermosuccinogenes 85%,Coprobacillus catenaformis 91%,Ruminococcus bromii-like, Ruminococcus torques 91%,and *** 93%were detected from all samples analysed.A multivariate analysis of the relative quantities of all 14 bacterial 16S rRNA gene phylotypes suggested that the intestinal microbiota of the iBS-D patients differed from other sample *** PCA on the first principal component(PC1),explaining 30.36%of the observed variation in the iBS-D patient group,was significantly altered from all other sample groups(iBS-D vs control, P=0.01;iBS-D vs iBS-M,P=0.00;iBS-D vs iBS-C, P=0.05).Significant differences were also observed in the levels of distinct phylotypes using relative values in proportion to the total amount of bacteria.A phy- lotype with 85%similarity to *** was quantified in significantly different quantities among the iBS-D and control subjects(-4.08±0.90 vs -

New strategies for spatially controlled growth of human neurons may provide viable solutions to treat and recover peripheral or spinal cord *** topography cues are known to promote attachment and direct proliferation of many cell types,guided outgrowth of human neurites has been found difficult to achieve so ***,three-dimensional(3D)micropatterned carbon nanotube(CNT)templates are used to effectively direct human neurite stem cell *** exploiting the mechanical flexibility,electrically conductivity and texture of the 3D CNT micropillars,a perfect environment is created to achieve specific guidance of human neurites,which may lead to enhanced therapeutic effects within the injured spinal cord or peripheral *** is found that the 3D CNT micropillars grant excellent anchoring for adjacent neurites to form seamless neuronal networks that can be grown to any arbitrary shape and *** from clear practical relevance in regenerative medicine,these results using the CNT based templates on Si chips also can pave the road for new types of microelectrode arrays to study cell network electrophysiology.

AiM:To investigate the correlations between selfreported symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome(iBS) and the gastrointestinal(Gi) microbiota ***:Fecal samples were collected from a total of 44 subjects diagnosed with *** symptoms were monitored with a validated inflammatory bowel disease questionnaire adjusted for iBS *** quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction assays were applied to evaluate the Gi microbiota *** and Gi bacterial genera(Bifidobacterium,Lactobacillus and Veillonella),groups(Clostridium coccoides/Eubacterium rectale,Desulfovibrio desulfuricans) and distinct bacterial phylotypes [closest 16S rDNA sequence resemblance to species Bifidobacterium catenulatum,Clostridium cocleatum,Collinsella aerofaciens(***),Coprococcus eutactus(***),Ruminococcus torques and Streptococcus bovis ] with a suspected association with iBS were *** between quantities or presence/absence data of selected bacterial groups or phylotypes and various iBSrelated symptoms were ***:Associations were observed between subjects' self-reported symptoms and the presence or quantities of certain Gi bacteria.A Ruminococcus torques(***)-like(94% similarity in 16S rRNA gene sequence) phylotype was associated with severity of bowel ***,among iBS subjects with *** 94% detected,the amounts of *** 88%,***-like and *** 97% phylotypes were significantly *** observations were also made concerning the effect of a subject's weight on Gi microbiota with regard to *** like phylotype,Bifidobacterium *** Lactobacillus ***:Bacteria seemingly affecting the symptom scores are unlikely to be the underlying cause or cure of iBS,but they may serve as biomarkers of the condition.

Modeling the Force-Velocity Relationship in Arm Movement

Modeling the force-velocity dependence of a muscle-tendon unit has been one of the most interesting objectives in the field of muscle mechanics. The so-called Hill’s equation [1,2] is widely used to describe the force-velocity relationship of muscle fibers. Hill’s equation was based on the laboratory measurements of muscle fibers and its application to the practical measurements in muscle mechanics has been problematic. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a new explicit calculation method to determine the force-velocity relationship, and test its function in experimental measurements. The model was based on the motion analysis of arm movements. Experiments on forearm rotations and whole arm rotations were performed downwards and upwards at maximum velocity. According to the present theory the movement proceeds as follows: start of motion, movement proceeds at constant maximum rotational moment (Hypothesis 1), movement proceeds at constant maximum power (Hypothesis 2), and stopping of motion. Theoretically derived equation, in which the motion proceeds at constant maximum power, fitted well the experimentally measured results. The constant maximum rotational moment hypothesis did not seem to fit the measured results and therefore a new equation which would better fit the measured results is needed for this hypothesis.

Acute non-renal adverse events after unenhanced and enhanced computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging

Aim: investigating the incidence of non-renal acute adverse events (AAEs) in patients undergoing unenhanced or enhanced computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) (four groups) using the ac- tive interview-method. Methods: The imaging procedure followed the standards of the department. Furthermore, the iodine-based (nonionic monomer) and gadolinium-based (cyclic) contrast agent was the same as used for all other examinations in the department. All patients were interviewed for 72 hours after the MR or CT examination regarding occurrence of AAEs using a structured questionnaire. Results: A total of 1358 patients (259 with enhanced MR, 434 with unenhanced MR, 450 with enhanced CT and 215 with unenhanced CT) were enrolled. AAEs were significantly higher (P unenhanced MR [39 (9.0%)] and CT [5 (2.3%)] groups. Dizziness was significantly [19 (7.3%), (P frequent in the enhanced MR. The same AAEs were reported in both contrast groups and control groups. Conclusion: AAEs which are mainly considered to be caused by the contrast medium are also experienced by patients undergoing CT or MR without contrast. Enhanced MR is correlated with more reactions than unenhanced MR and enhanced CT. Dizziness was reported more frequently after MR than CT, both with and without contrast;more patients were CNS examined with MR and with CT.

Why obese women feel better about their“big”condition when they are pregnant:A qualitative study performed in Sweden

Overweight and obesity as measured by the body mass index (BMi) is an increasing problem worldwide according to the World Health Organization (WHO) [1]. Women having a body mass index greater than or equal to30 kg/m2 are considered to be obese and they run a greater risk of complications when they are pregnant. Complications such as high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, risk of intrauterine fetal death and slower delivery when giving birth to the baby are risks that can affect the well being of the woman and the child. According to the study on the women, the midwife’s most important role when meeting with the pregnant obese woman is to inform them about potential risks during pregnancy. The midwife must withhold judgment. For many women living with obesity means that they are not seen as the person they actually are. Obese women feel that they do not conform to the societal ideal of an attractive woman because of their size and because of other people’s prejudices regarding their obesity. When an obese woman becomes pregnant they may feel more comfortable with their standing in society because there is a happy explanation for the size of their abdomen. They experience that they are happy and proud about their stomach and this gives them a sense of relief and belonging.

Bone defects resulting from trauma,surgery,congenital malformations,and other factors are among the most common health problems *** current strategies such as autografts and allografts are recognized as the most successful treatments for stimulating bone regeneration,limitations such as graft source and complications still ***?is a xeno-hybrid bone graft(made from bovine bone matrix,poly(L-lactic-co-e-caprolactone),and gelatin)with a positive clinical record for bone *** this study,the formulation for designing xeno-hybrid bone grafts using gelatins from different sources(bovine-and porcine-derived gelatin,with bone grafts named SBN and SPK,respectively)was investigated,and the biological responses were evaluated in vitro and in *** results demonstrate that gelatins from both bovine and porcine sources can be loaded onto SmartBone?successfully and safely,withstanding the aggressive manufacturing *** bone cell responses were observed in *** was found to enhance osteocalcin secretion while SPK was found to upregulate osteopontin from human *** vivo,both bone grafts promoted osteogenesis,but SPK degraded earlier than *** findings suggest that SBN and SPK provide different yet comparable solutions for optimizing the bone resorption and regeneration *** xeno-hybrid bone grafts possess ideal potential for bone defect repairing.

The paper examines the role of guanxi and trust in knowledge interaction between the R＆D centers of multinational corporations and Chinese universities. The results of the study demonstrate the particular sig-nificance of guanxi and trust as well as their dynamic interconnections in globalizing university-industry knowledge interaction including technology and knowledge transfer, knowledge integration and knowledge co-creation in China. Theoretical and managerial implications of the study are discussed, and a new avenue for future research is suggested.
