Potato aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae performance is determined by aphid genotype and not mycorrhizal fungi or water availability

Intra- and interspecific variation in plant and insect traits can alter the strength and direction of insect-plant interactions, with outcomes modified by soil biotic and abiotic conditions. We used the potato aphid （Macrosiphum euphorbiae Thomas） feeding on cultivated Solanum tuberosum and wild Solanurn berthaulti to study the impact of water availability and plant mutualistic arbuscular mycorrhizal （AM） fungi on aphid performance and susceptibility to a parasitoid wasp （Aphidius ervi Haliday）. Plants were grown under glass with live or sterile AM fungal spores and supplied with sufficient or reduced water supply. Plants were infested with 1 of 3 genotypes ofM. euphorbiae or maintained as aphidfree controls; aphid abundance was scored after 1 week, after which aphid susceptibility to A. ervi was assayed explanta. Solarium tuberosum accumulated c. 20% more dry mass than S. berthaultii, and root mass of S. berthaultii was smallest under reduced water supply in the presence of AM fungi. Aphid abundance was lowest on S. berthaultii and highest for genotype ＂2＂ aphids; genotype ＂1＂ aphid density was particularly reduced on S. berthaultii. Aphid genotype ＂1＂ exhibited low susceptibility to parasitism and was attacked less frequently than the other two more susceptible aphid genotypes. Neither AM fungi nor water availability affected insect performance. Our study suggests a fitness trade-offin M. euphorbiae between parasitism resistance and aphid performance on poor quality Solarium hosts that warrants further exploration, and indicates the importance of accounting for genotype identity in determining the outcome of multitrophic interactions.

characterization of Fusobacterium nucleatum ATcc 23726 adhesins involved in strain-specific attachment to Porphyromonas gingivalis

Bacterial adherence is an essential virulence factor in pathogenesis and infection. Fusobacterium nucleatum has a central role in oral biofilm architecture by acting as a bridge between early Gram-positive and late Gram-negative colonizers that do not otherwise adhere to each other. In this study, we survey a key adherence interaction of F. nucleatum with Porphyromonas gingivalis, and present evidence that multiple fusobacterial adhesins have a role in the attachment of F. nucleatum ATcc 23726 to P. gingivalis in a highly strain-dependent manner. Interaction between these species displayed varying sensitivities to arginine, galactose and lactose. Arginine was found to hamper coaggregation by at least 62% and up to 89% with several P. gingivalis strains and galactose inhibition ranged from no inhibition up to 58% with the same P. gingivalis strains. Lactose consistently inhibited F. nucleatum interaction with these P. gingivalis strains ranging from 40% to 56% decrease in coaggregation. Among the adhesins involved are the previously described Fap2 and surprisingly, RadD, which was described in an earlier study for its function in attachment of F. nucleatum to Gram-positive species. We also provide evidence for the presence of at least one additional adhesin that is sensitive to arginine but unlike Fap2 and RadD, is not a member of the autotransporter family type of fusobacterial large outer membrane proteins. The strain-specific binding profile of multiple fusobacterial adhesins to P. gingivalis highlights the heterogeneity and complexity of interspecies interactions in the oral cavity.

Soil-transmitted helminth egg contamination from soil of indigenous communities in selected barangays in Tigaon, camarines Sur, Philippines

Objective:To provide baseline data on the prevalence and intensity of soil-transmitted helminthiasis egg contamination in the soil among indigenous ***:A total of 317 soil samples from three barangays of indigenous communities communities in Tigaon,camarines Sur,Philippines were examined for soil-transmitted helminthiasis egg contamination using optimized sugar flotation ***:Of the soil samples examined,141(44.48%)were contaminated by Ascaris spp.,Toxocara spp.,and Trichuris *** cumulative prevalence varying across the study sites(Pcaris *** predominant in all study sites,followed by Toxocara *** Trichuris *** a prevalence of 41.96%,7.57%,and 5.36%,***,Toxocara *** the highest intensity of contamination,followed by Ascaris *** Trichuris *** term of geometric mean soil-transmitted helminthiasis eggs recovered per one gram soil sample(34.25,21.45,and 11.85 respectively).Each study site harbors significant amount of soiltransmitted helminthiasis eggs and zoonotic Toxocara eggs,which present high risk of soil-transmitted helminthiasis infection,particularly among children observed to play and cohabitate with animals known to be hosts of these ***:The alarming rate of soil-transmitted helminthiasis and Toxocara egg contamination reported in this study suggests that additional measures should be undertaken to control soil-transmitted helminthiasis and zoonotic intestinal infections in the country.

This study aims to explore new categorization that characterizes the distribution clusters of visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissues(VAT and SAT)measured by magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),to analyze the relationship between the VAT-SAT distribution patterns and the novel body shape descriptors(BSDs),and to develop a classifier to predict the fat distribution clusters using the *** the study,66 male and 54 female participants were scanned by MRI and a stereovision body imaging(SBI)to measure participants’abdominal VAT and SAT volumes and the BSDs.A fuzzy c-means algorithm was used to form the inherent grouping clusters of abdominal fat distributions.A support-vector-machine(SVM)classifier,with an embedded feature selection scheme,was employed to determine an optimal subset of the BSDs for predicting internal fat distributions.A fivefold cross-validation procedure was used to prevent over-fitting in the *** classification results of the BSDs were compared with those of the traditional anthropometric measurements and the Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry(DXA)*** clusters were identified for abdominal fat distributions:(1)low VAT and SAT,(2)elevated VAT and SAT,(3)higher SAT,and(4)higher *** cross-validation accuracies of the traditional anthropometric,DXA and BSD measurements were 85.0%,87.5% and 90%,*** to the traditional anthropometric and DXA measurements,the BSDs appeared to be effective and efficient in predicting abdominal fat distributions.

An Automatic Approach to Extending the consumer Health Vocabulary

Purpose: Given the ubiquitous presence of the internet in our lives, many individuals turn to the web for medical information. A challenge here is that many laypersons(as "consumers") do not use professional terms found in the medical nomenclature when describing their conditions and searching the internet. The consumer Health Vocabulary(cHV) ontology, initially developed in 2007, aimed to bridge this gap, although updates have been limited over the last decade. The purpose of this research is to implement a means of automatically creating a hierarchical consumer health vocabulary. This overall purpose is improving consumers' ability to search for medical conditions and symptoms with an enhanced cHV and improving the search capabilities of our searching and indexing tool HIVE(Helping Interdisciplinary Vocabulary Engineering).Design/methodology/approach: The research design uses ontological fusion, an approach for automatically extracting and integrating the Medical Subject Headings(Me SH) ontology into cHV, and further convert cHV from a flat mapping to a hierarchical ontology. The additional relationships and parent terms from Me SH allow us to uncover relationships between existing terms in the cHV ontology as well. The research design also included improving the search capabilities of HIVE identifying alternate relationships and consolidating them to a single ***: The key findings are an improved cHV with a hierarchical structure that enables consumers to search through the ontology and uncover more *** limitations: There are some cases where the improved search results in HIVE return terms that are related but not completely synonymous. Message framing has been shown to influence the persuasiveness of health communications. In this conceptual paper, the authors suggest that message framing can be extended to include causal attributions, and Weiner＇s Attribution Theory （Weiner＇s AT） is an appropriate theoretical framework for the study of message framing and health communications. Weiner＇s AT proposes a specific motivational sequence that may explain cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses to message frames. Propositions regarding relationships between message frames, causal attributions, and emotional and behavioral responses are presented to guide future research. The implications of this attribution-based message-framing process for future research are discussed

Parental Awareness and Perception of Their children’s Body Size

Objective: To investigate parents’ misperception of their active children’s size. Subjects: One hundred and forty male or female parents and their children from a youth soccer league participated. Actual child Body Mass Index (BMI) percentiles and BMI categories were compared to the results of a Body Size Estimation Task and lifestyles questionnaire results. Results: Parents underestimated the body size of their children and placed them in a lower BMI category than the children actually belonged in. As was the case in other studies children in the unhealthy or at risk to become overweight category where seen as a healthy weight. Unlike other studies, many healthy weight children were seen as underweight. conclusions: An explanation of body size misperception and underestimation of body size may be “change blindness”. The growing prevalence of obesity in children may be better addressed by focusing on the parents’ apparent lack of concern about excess childhood weight and the parents’ identification of excess childhood weight as “just normal” rather than seeing excess weight as a potential problem.

Expression of human FUS/TLS in yeast leads to protein aggregation and cytotoxicity,recapitulating key features of FUS proteinopathy

Mutations in the fused in sarcoma/translocated in liposarcoma(FUS/TLS)gene have been associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS).FUS-positive neuropathology is reported in a range of neurodegenerative diseases,including ALS and fronto-temporal lobar degeneration with ubiquitin-positive pathology(FTLDU).To examine protein aggregation and cytotoxicity,we expressed human FUS protein in *** of either wild type or ALS-associated R524S or P525L mutant FUS in yeast cells led to formation of aggregates and cytotoxicity,with the two ALS mutants showing increased ***,yeast cells expressing human FUS protein recapitulate key features of FUSpositive neurodegenerative ***,a significant fraction of FUS expressing yeast cells stained by propidium iodide were without detectable protein aggregates,suggesting that membrane impairment and cellular damage caused by FUS expression may occur before protein aggregates become microscopically detectable and that aggregate formation might protect cells from FUS-mediated *** N-terminus of FUS,containing the QGSY and G rich regions,is sufficient for the formation of aggregates but not *** c-terminal domain,which contains a cluster of mutations,did not show aggregation or *** to TDP-43 when expressed in yeast,FUS protein has the intrinsic property of forming aggregates in the absence of other human *** the other hand,the aggregates formed by FUS are thioflavin T-positive and resistant to 0.5%sarkosyl,unlike TDP-43 when expressed in yeast ***,TDP-43 and FUS display distinct domain requirements in aggregate formation and cytotoxicity.

Prior research establishing that bone interacts in coordination with the bone marrow microenvironment(BMME)to regulate hematopoietic homeostasis was largely based on analyses of individual bone-associated cell *** advances in intravital imaging has suggested that the expansion of hematopoietic stem cells(HScs)and acute myeloid leukemia cells is restricted to bone marrow microdomains during a distinct stage of bone *** findings indicate that dynamic bone remodeling likely imposes additional heterogeneity within the BMME to yield differential clonal responses.A holistic understanding of the role of bone remodeling in regulating the stem cell niche and how these interactions are altered in age-related hematological malignancies will be critical to the development of novel *** advance this understanding,herein,we provide a synopsis of the cellular and molecular constituents that participate in bone turnover and their known connections to the hematopoietic ***,we elaborate on the coupling between bone remodeling and the BMME in homeostasis and age-related hematological malignancies and after treatment with bone-targeting *** then discuss unresolved questions and ambiguities that remain in the field.
