BACKGROUND Presence of liver metastatic disease in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC),either synchronous or metachronous after pancreatic resection,is a terminal diagnosis that warrants management with palliative intent as per all international practice ***,there is an increasing interest on any potential value of surgical treatment of isolated oligometastatic disease in selected *** To present the published evidence on surgical management of PDAC liver metastases,synchronous and metachronous,and compare the outcomes of these treatments to the current standard of *** A systematic review was performed in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses guidelines to compare the outcomes of both synchronous and metachronous liver metastases resection to standard *** 356 studies were identified,31 studies underwent full-text review and of these 10 were suitable for *** synchronous resection of liver metastases was compared to standard care,most studies did not demonstrate a survival benefit with the exception of one study that utilised neoadjuvant ***,resection of metachronous disease appeared to confer a survival advantage when compared to treatment with chemotherapy *** A survival benefit may exist in resection of selected cases of metachronous liver oligometastatic PDAC disease,after disease biology has been tested with time and systemic *** survival benefit is less clear in synchronous cases;however an approach with neoadjuvant treatment and consideration of resection in some selected cases may confer some *** studies should focus on pathways for selection of cases that may benefit from an aggressive approach.

Phylogenetic reconstruction of Chirita and allies (Gesneriaceae) with taxonomic treatments

Chirita D. Don, a large genus in the subfamily Cyrtandroideae of Gesneriaceae, has been the subject of much debate whether it is a natural group or not. In addition, the highly heterogeneous Chirita has also been very problematic with regard to delimitation and subdivision. Here we used the nrDNA internal transcribed spacer and cpDNA trnL-F for molecular phylogenetic analaysis, combined with morphological data. Our results suggest that Chirita is an artificial, polyphyletic genus. The most important character that defines Chirita, the dorso-ventrally oblique and bilamellar stigma, has evolved convergently in different clades of diandrous Cyrtandroideae. Chirita sensu stricto only includes the species of Chirita sect. Chirita, whereas Chirita sect. Microchirita is an independent clade located at the basal node of the phylogenetic tree. Chirita sect. Liebigia is closely related to Didymocarpus with an entire stigma unlike other species of Chirita. The species of Chirita sect. Gibbosaccus, Chiritopsis, Primulina, and Wentsaiboea form a monophyletic group that is sister to a strongly supported clade comprising four monotypic genera Paralagarosolen, Calcareoboea, Petrocodon, and Tengia. We further analyzed the morphological evolution of Chirita and identified a series of morphological synapomorphies for the monophyletic groups revealed herein, and thereby provide a taxonomic treatment in this study.

Effect of Hind Leg Morphology on Performance of a Canine-inspired Quadrupedal Robot

Biomimetic leg designs often appear to be arbitrarily chosen. To make a more objective choice regarding biomimetic leg configuration for small canine-inspired robots, we compare one hind leg to the same leg arranged in a different orientation, and show that the less biomimetic leg provides better performance. This differently-oriented leg design, which we call ＂transverse-mirrored＂ was more efficient and faster, both in simulation and experiment even though both leg configurations used the same passive and active components, rest angles, and monoartieular knee spring. In experiments the normal configuration had a maximum speed of 0.33 m·s^-1 and a specific resistance of 5.1. Conversely, the less biomimetic transverse-mirrored configuration had a maximum speed of 0.4 m·s^-1 and specific resistance of 3.9. Therefore the transverse-mirrored leg＇s best performance yields a 21% increase in speed and 24% decrease in specific resistance when compared to the best performance achieved in the normal biomimetic leg. The major underlying reason is that the knee spring engages more readily in the transverse-mirrored configuration, resulting in this faster and more efficient locomotion. The conclusion is that simply copying from nature does not lead to optimal performance and that insight into the role played by passive design components on natural locomotory dynamics is important.

Competitive interactions and coexistence of sympatric flagship carnivores in Asia

Understanding the competition and coexistence of flagship carnivores is key to creating strategies for their conservation in the face of global carnivore *** studies exploring the dynamics and competition between tigers(Panthera tigris)and leopards(***)span decades,there is a lack of understanding regarding the factors that influence their coexistence mechanisms on a broad scale,as well as the drivers determining their exploitative and interference *** gathered a comprehensive list of research papers among which 36 papers explored the interspecific interactions between tigers and leopards and tested the influence of biotic and abiotic factors on the coexistence mechanisms along three dimensions using multiple response variables regression models;we also tested the influence of ecological drivers determining the exploitative or interference competition between tigers and *** and ungulate density were the most important predictors in regulating the coexistence *** and leopards exhibited more positive relations/higher overlaps as elevation increased in the spatial *** addition,they showed a higher dietary overlap in the prey-rich *** determined that interference competition between tigers and leopards was less frequently observed in habitats with dense tree cover and homogeneous vegetation ***,studies with multiple metrics would promote the detection of interference *** study provides new insight into the competitive interactions and coexistence mechanisms of tigers and leopards on a broad ***-makers and managers should pay more attention to the factors of elevation,prey abundance,and habitat structures for the conservation of tigers and leopards.

Real-time Object Subspace Searching Based on Discrete Searching Paths and Local Energy

In automatic visual inspection, the object image subspace should be segmented and matched quickly so that the affine relationship can be built between the template image and the sample image. When the interference is strong and the illumination is uneven, for example in an industrial application, this can make it difficult to obtain an objects subspace quickly and accurately in real-time. In this paper, a novel strategy is proposed to adopt discrete radial search paths instead of searching all points in an image. Therefore, the searching time can be substantially reduced. In order to reduce the influence coming from the industrial environment, the paper proposes another method that is local energy level set segmentation, which can locate the object subspace more efficiently and accurately. The detection of ＂crown caps＂ is presented as an example in this paper. Detection effects and computing time are compared between several detection methods, and the mechanisms of inspection have also been analyzed.

The addition of surface acoustic wave(SAW)technologies to microfluidics has greatly advanced lab-on-a-chip applications due to their unique and powerful attributes,including high-precision manipulation,versatility,integrability,biocompatibility,contactless nature,and rapid ***,the development of SAW microfluidic devices is limited by complex and time-consuming micro/nanofabrication techniques and access to cleanroom facilities for multistep photolithography and vacuum-based *** simplify the fabrication of SAW microfluidic devices with customizable dimensions and functions,we utilized the additive manufacturing technique of aerosol jet *** successfully fabricated customized SAW microfluidic devices of varying materials,including silver nanowires,graphene,and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)polystyrene sulfonate(PEDOT:PSS).To characterize and compare the acoustic actuation performance of these aerosol jet printed SAW microfluidic devices with their cleanroom-fabricated counterparts,the wave displacements and resonant frequencies of the different fabricated devices were directly measured through scanning laser Doppler ***,to exhibit the capability of the aerosol jet printed devices for lab-on-a-chip applications,we successfully conducted acoustic streaming and particle concentration ***,we demonstrated a novel solution-based,direct-write,single-step,cleanroom-free additive manufacturing technique to rapidly develop SAW microfluidic devices that shows viability for applications in the fields of biology,chemistry,engineering,and medicine.

Transformation of low-volatility gaseous precursors to new particles affects aerosol number concentration,cloud formation and hence the *** clustering of acid and base molecules is a major mechanism driving fast nucleation and initial growth of new particles in the ***,the acid-base cluster composition,measured using state-of-the-art mass spectrometers,cannot explain the measured high formation rate of new *** we present strong evidence for the existence of base molecules such as amines in the smallest atmospheric sulfuric acid clusters prior to their detection by mass *** demonstrate that forming(H2SO4)1(amine)1is the rate-limiting step in atmospheric H2SO4-amine nucleation and the uptake of(H2SO4)1(amine)1is a major pathway for the initial growth of *** proposed mechanism is very consistent with measured new particle formation in urban Beijing,in which dimethylamine is the key base for H2SO4nucleation while other bases such as ammonia may contribute to the growth of larger *** findings further underline the fact that strong amines,even at low concentrations and when undetected in the smallest clusters,can be crucial to particle formation in the planetary boundary layer.

Pentoxifylline treatment and penile calcifications in men Nith Peyronie＇s disease

This retrospective cohort study from a single clinical practice enrolled patients with evidence of calcified Peyronie＇s disease （PD） plaques detected on penile ultrasound at the time of initial presentation. The primary objective was to describe the effect of pentoxifylline （PTX） treatment on subtunical calcifications in men with PD. A PD-specific questionnaire was administered and sonographic evaluations were performed at baseline and follow-up visits. Descriptive statistics and X2 analysis were used to characterize the effect of PTX on calcified tunical plaques. In all, 71 men （mean age： 51.9 years） with PD and sonographic evidence of calcification were identified. Of them, 62 of these men were treated with PTX for a mean duration of I year, and nine with vitamin E or no treatment. Improvement or stabilization in calcium burden at follow-up was noted in 57 （91.9%） of men treated with PTX versus four （44,4%） of those not treated with PTX （P〈0.001）. PTX users were much less likely to have a subjective worsening of their clinical condition （25.0% versus 78.3%, P=0.002）. Treatment with PTX appeared to stabilize or reduce calcium content in PD plaques. A randomized controlled trial is warranted to further explore this effect.
