Analysis of the Oscillatory Flows of Multiple Shock Waves in a Constant Area Duct

The oscillatory response of multiple shock waves to downstream perturbations in a supersonic flow is studied numerically in a rectangular duct.Multiple shock waves are formed inside the duct at a shock Mach number of 1.75.The duct has an exit height of H,and the effect of duct resonance on multiple shock oscillations is investigated by attaching exit ducts of lengths 0H,50H,and 150H.The downstream disturbance frequency varied from 10 Hz to 200 Hz to explore the oscillation characteristics of the multiple shock waves.The oscillatory response of shock waves under self-excited and forced oscillation conditions are analyzed in terms of wall static pressure,shock train leading-edge location,shock train length,and the size of the separation bubble.The extent of the initial shock location increases with an increase in exit duct length for the self-excited oscillation condition.The analysis of the shock train leading edge and the spectral analysis of wall static pressure variations are conducted.The variation in the shock train length is analyzed using the pressure ratio method for self-excited as well as forced oscillations.The RMS amplitude of the normalized shock train length(ζ_(ST))increases with an increase in the exit duct length for the self-excited oscillation condition.When the downstream perturbation frequency is increased,ζ_(ST)is decreased for exit duct configurations.For all exit duct designs and downstream forcing frequencies,the size of the separation bubble grows and shrinks during the shock oscillations,demonstrating the dependence on duct resonance and forced oscillations.

Molecular Cloning and Characterization of a Candidate ENOX Protein of <i>Saccharomyces cerevisiae</i>with a 25 Min Period Insensitive to Simalikalactone D Inhibition and Melatonin

A yeast deletion library was screened based on NADH fluorescence using a 384-well plate assay to identify a yeast isolate lacking a previously identified cell surface oxidase exhibiting an oscillatory pattern with a period length of 25 min and resistant to the ENOX1-specific inhibitor simalikalactone D (YNOX for yeast-specific ENOX = ENOX4). The cDNA was cloned from a yeast over expression library using NADH fluorescence analyzed by Fast Fourier transform and decomposition fits. The objective was to identify and sequence an ENOX homologue in Saccharomyces cerevisiae with a 25 min rather than a 24 min period length (YNOX). The finding identified YDR005C as the yeast ENOX protein with a temperature-independent 25 min period length and insensitive to inhibition by simalikalactone D. The encoded protein was expressed in bacteria and characterized. Gel slices corresponding to 55 kDa and 39 kDa His-tagged proteins exhibited 25 min oscillatory patterns not inhibited by 1 μM simalikalactone D for both NADH oxidation and reduced coenzyme Q10 oxidation as well as a protein disulfide-thiol interchange activity which alternated with the oxidative activities. Activities were phased by low-frequency electromagnetic fields but, in contrast, to yeast ENOX1, not by addition of melatonin. The assay in the presence of D2O shifted the length of the oscillatory period from 25 min to 32 min. The YDR005C deletion mutant cells lacked the ENOX4 clock output present in the wild type yeast.

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is one of renewable biofuel production technology that directly converts biomass to electricity. Cellulosic biomass is particularly attractive renewable resources for its low cost and abundance and neutral carbon balance. However, methanogenesis remains as a major factor limiting MFC performance. The current study reports that saponin addition at 0.05% w/v dose to anolyte in MFCs inhibited methanogenesis and improves power generation and cellulose fermentation. Mediator-less two chamber H-type MFCs were prepared using rumen fluid as anode inocula at 20% v/v of anolyte to convert finely ground pine tree (Avicel) at 2%, w/v to electricity. Saponin was added to the anode of MFC at 0.005% or 0.05% v/v dosage for treatment. MFC power and current across an external resistor were measured daily for 10d. On d10, collected gases from anode compartment were measured for total gas volume and analyzed for gas composition on gas chromatography. Supplementation of saponin to MFC at 0.005% did not have any effects on electricity generation or biogas production and composition. US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates food-borne pathogenic Salmonella bacteria cause about 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the U.S. every year. Outbreaks of multidrug-resistant Salmonella Reading linked mainly to raw turkey products and alfalfa sprouts have accounted for human illness including mortality. Therefore, we downloaded and compared genome sequences of 897 Salmonella Reading isolated from 27 resources in 11 countries at 21 year-points from the National Center for Biotechnology Information database. Isolates were clustered into 10 clades which consisted of 3 major and 7 minor or single node clades. Although 3 major clades included both Europe and American isolates, one clade consisted of 605 North American isolates out of 614 isolates. Evolutionary distance is more related to the continent than the source of isolation. The host source, continent (North America and Europe) and phylogenetic clade were related to the prevalence of isolates encoding Antimicrobial Resistance Genes (ARGs). Prevalence of prophages was greater in bovine and swine isolates than poultry and human isolates and the least prevalence was found in human isolates. Between continents, the prevalence of phage was greater in North Ame- rican isolates than European. The diversity of virulence factors in swine isolates differed from poultry isolate while no difference was found among continents. In conclusion, evolutionary distance is related to isolation host source rather than the continent, and genome features were distinguished by host and cluster. Our genomic analysis implies that Salmonella Reading evolved independently to environments within its lineages.

Transplantation for type 1 diabetes is severely limited by the lack of donor islets and by the rapid destruction of transplanted islets by innate and adaptive immunity.Successful transplantation requires desirable engraftment,avoidance of immediate immune barriers,and long term escape from lymphocyte mediated rejection.The clinical applicability of transplantation could be further enhanced by protocols that permit the use of xenogeneic islets as this advance would markedly increase the availability of donor islets to meet the significant need.In addition,xenogeneic tolerance induction would substantially improve the study of human islet biology in animal model systems.We have utilized treatment with the monoclonal antibody against CD45RB to induce permanent acceptance of human islets in murine recipients.Unexpectedly,depletion of B cells permitted universal tolerance induction andthis tolerance was species—specific.

Pregnancy Outcomes at Kasungu Maternity Ward in Central Malawi—A Review of Maternity Ward Register

Health care services during pregnancy and childbirth and after delivery are important for the survival and wellbeing of both the mother and the infant. The pregnancy outcomes at Kasungu District Hospital Maternity Ward have not been documented. Additionally, MDHS does not capture data regarding, prematurity, APGAR scores, and causes of maternal deaths and causes of neonatal deaths. Using Kasungu District Hospital Maternity Ward register, we aimed to describe the pregnancy outcomes at Kasungu Maternity Ward. From March 2016 to February 2017, data were available for 10,842 deliveries. The calculated Perinatal Mortality Rate (PMR) was about 77/1000 births and the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) was 318 deaths per 100,000 live births. The Spontaneous Vertex Delivery (SVD) rate was 86% and the caesarean section rate was 10%. 1734 (16%) of all deliveries were premature borne between 28 and 36 gestation weeks. 1182 (11%) deliveries had missing APGAR scores and 81 neonates were born with 5 min Apgar scores less than 7. Adverse pregnancy outcomes occur at Kasungu Hospital Maternity Ward. More effort and resources are needed to decrease their occurrence.

In 2019,the Event Horizon Telescope(EHT)released the first-ever image of a black hole event horizon.Astronomers are now aiming for higher angular resolutions of distant targets,like black holes,to understand more about the fundamental laws of gravity that govern our universe.To achieve this higher resolution and increased sensitivity,larger radio telescopes are needed to operate at higher frequencies and in larger quantities.Projects like the next-generation Very Large Array(ngVLA)and the Square-Kilometer Array(SKA)require building hundreds of telescopes with diameters greater than 10 ms over the next decade.This has a twofold effect.Radio telescope surfaces need to be more accurate to operate at higher frequencies,and the logistics involved in maintaining a radio telescope need to be simplified to support them properly in large quantities.Both of these problems can be solved with improved methods for surface metrology that are faster and more accurate with a higher resolution.This leads to faster and more accurate panel alignment and,therefore,a more productive observatory.In this paper,we present the use of binocular fringe projection profilometry as a solution to this problem and demonstrate it by aligning two panels on a 3-m radio telescope dish.The measurement takes only 10 min and directly delivers feedback on the tip,tilt,and piston of each panel to create the ideal reflector shape.

Leveraging the high resolution, sensitivity, and wide frequency coverage of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array（ALMA）, the QUARKS survey, standing for “Querying Underlying mechanisms of massive star formation with ALMA-Resolved gas Kinematics and Structures”, is observing 139 massive starforming clumps at ALMA Band 6（λ～1.3 mm）. This paper introduces the Atacama Compact Array（ACA） 7 m data of the QUARKS survey, describing the ACA observations and data reduction. Combining multiwavelength data, we provide the first edition of QUARKS atlas, offering insights into the multiscale and multiphase interstellar medium in high-mass star formation. The ACA 1.3 mm catalog includes 207 continuum sources that are called ACA sources. Their gas kinetic temperatures are estimated using three formaldehyde transitions with a non-LTE radiation transfer model, and the mass and density are derived from a dust emission model. The ACA sources are massive（16–84 percentile values of 6–160 M⊙）, gravity-dominated(M ∝ R1.1)fragments within massive clumps, with supersonic turbulence（M >1） and embedded star-forming protoclusters. We find a linear correlation between the masses of the fragments and the massive clumps,with a ratio of 6% between the two. When considering fragments as representative of dense gas, the ratio indicates a dense gas fraction（DGF） of 6%, although with a wide scatter ranging from 1% to 10%. If we consider the QUARKS massive clumps to be what is observed at various scales, then the size-independent DGF indicates a self-similar fragmentation or collapsing mode in protocluster formation. With the ACA data over four orders of magnitude of luminosity-to-mass ratio（L/M）, we find that the DGF increases significantly with L/M, which indicates clump evolutionary stage. We observed a limited fragmentation at the subclump scale,which can be explained by a dynamic global collapse process.
