The Ornithodolite as a tool to quantify animal space use and habitat selection: a case study with birds diving in tidal waters

Animal-attached technologies can be powerful means to quantify space use and behavior;however,there are also ethical implications associated with capturing and instrumenting ***,tagging approaches are not necessarily well-suited for examining the movements of multiple individuals within specific,local areas of ***,we assess a method of quantifying animal space use based on a modified theodolite with an inbuilt laser *** a database of>4200 tracks of migrating birds,we show that detection distance in-creases with bird body mass(range 5 g to>10 kg).The maximum distance recorded to a bird was 5500 m and measurement error was≤5 m for targets within this distance range:a level comparable to methods such as GPS *** go on to present a case study where this method was used to assess habitat selection in seabirds operating in dynamic coastal waters close to a tidal *** positional data with outputs from a hydrographic model revealed that great cormorants(Phalacrocorax carbo)appeared to be highly selective of current characteristics in space and time,exploiting areas where mean current speeds were<0.8 m∙s^(−1) and diving at times when turbulent energy levels were *** birds also oriented into tidal currents during *** together,this suggests that collision risks are low for cormorants at this site,as the 2 conditions avoided by cormorants(high mean current speeds and turbulence levels)are associated with operational tidal ***-all,we suggest that this modified theodolite system is well-suited to the quantification of movement in small areas associated with particular development strategies,including sustainable energy devices.

Both conventional and microchip-based capillary electrophoresis(CE) technologies have been used for the analysis of enzymes. Practical procedures of using CE to determine the Km and Vmax values of an enzyme have been developed. By studying the inhibition to the enzyme, it is possible to select a suitable drug candidate. When compared with the conventional CE method, single lane microchip-based method can improve the speed for the assay three times. By using multiple lane-based microchip, the speed can be further increased.

Dear Editor, Hepatitis C virus （HCV） infection, which causes hepatitis C and can chronically lead to serious and life-threatening dis- eases including liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma （Lauer and Walker, 2001）, is a rising global health problem. More than 170 million people are infected by HCV worldwide and 3-4 million people are infected each year. No effective vaccines are available to prevent HCV infection. Moreover, HCV is a fast mutating RNA virus with seven distinct genotypes and many subtypes within each genotype. The high degree of genetic diversity can lead to further viral resistance to the current therapies within individual patients （Li et al., 2012）. Hence, there remains a strong desire in the medical community to explore new therapeutic opportunities.

Springs are not always the same. In some years, April bursts upon our Virginia hills in one prodigious leap—and all the stage is filled at once, whole choruses of tulips, arabesques of forsythia, cadenzas of flowering plum. It pauses, overcome by shyness, like my grandchild at the door, peeping in, ducking out of sight, giggling in the hallway. “I know you’re out there,” I cry. “Come in!” And April slips into our *** dogwood bud, pale green, is inlaid with russet markings. Within the perfect cup a score of clustered seeds are nestled. One examines the bud in awe: Where were those seeds a month ago? The apples display their milliner’s scraps of ivory silk, rose-tinged. All the sleeping things wake up—primrose, baby iris, blue phlox. The earth warms—you can smell it, feel it, crumble April in your *** dark Blue Ridge Mountains in which I dwell, great-hipped, big-breasted, slumber on the western sky. And then they stretch and gradually awaken. A warm wind, soft as a girl’s hair, moves sailboat clouds in gentle skies. The rains come—good rains to sleep by—and fields that were dun as oatmeal turn to pale green, then to Kelly green.

Aerosol particles released from biomass and bio-fuel burning have large contributions to the global aerosol *** primary agricultural commodity in Taiwan is rice,similar to most countries in *** a long-term study collected between December 2006 and February 2008 in Yunlin County on the subtropical island of Taiwan. Ambient aerosol was examined for seasonal patterns（summer harvest *** harvest）in terms of size-resolved chemical *** concentrations,size distributions and diagnostic ratios of three anhydrosugars（levoglucosan,mannosan,and galactosan）,used as molecular tracers for biomass burning,are reported *** total of the three anhydrosugars（ΣAnhydrosugars）in PM2.5,PM10,and TSP during the winter harvest season was on average 478（±270）,494（±275）,and 618（±385）ng m -3 ,respectively,while the respective summer harvest season values were 449（±170）,888（±271）,and 1125（±391）ng m -3 .Levoglucosan concentrations showed a strong seasonal dependence in the ambient levels as well as size *** high PM2.5-10 fraction of levoglucosan during the summer harvest season is likely related to the wet ambient conditions,characteristic for summer time in southern *** addition to particle coagulation,uptake of water by ambient aerosol particles will result in increased particle size as ***,Levoglucosan/mannosan ratios in PM2.5 derived from rice straw burning processes revealed a clear signature for smoke aerosol from straw burning.

This talk will review several new advances in the treatment of acne and rosacea. Dose response studies with minocycline demonstrate 1 mg/kg as the ideal dose in contrast to the commonly used 2mg/kg. Absorption stud- ies with minocycline reveal a wide range of absorption which have implications for efficacy and side effect pro- files. Recent studies with a topical combination of tretinoin and clindamycin show that this formulation of treti- noin is not associated with flaring of inflammatory lesions in the early phase of treatment contrary to the widely held belief that topical retinoids induce a flare of inflammatory lesions. A formulation of 5% dapsone has been approved by the F. D.A. for the treatment of inflammatory ache. A recent study in 100 G-6-P-D deficient

Alignment of the hindfoot following total knee arthroplasty: A systematic review

BACKGROUND There appears to be a close relationship between deformities at the knee joint and at the hindfoot in patients with knee osteoarthritis(OA).Despite this intrinsic link,there is a dearth of studies investigating alterations in hindfoot alignment following total knee arthroplasty(TKA)in patients with knee *** To evaluate changes in alignment of the hindfoot following TKA,foot and ankle clinical outcomes in terms of subjective clinical scoring tools following surgical intervention,and to analyse the level of evidence(LOE)and quality of evidence(QOE)of the included *** MEDLINE,EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases were systematically reviewed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses *** reporting changes in the postoperative alignment of the hindfoot following TKA were *** level and QOE were recorded and *** Eleven studies with a total of 1142 patients(1358 knees)met the inclusion/exclusion *** studies were of LOE II and 5 studies were of LOE *** with preoperative varus knee deformity and valgus hindfoot deformity demonstrated improvement in hindfoot alignment post *** with preoperative varus knee deformity and varus hindfoot deformity demonstrated no improvement in hindfoot alignment following *** different radiographic parameters were used to measure the alignment of the hindfoot across the included studies,with the tibio-calcaneal angle most frequently utilised(27.3%).CONCLUSION This systematic review demonstrated that the hindfoot may display compensatory changes in alignment following TKA in patients with knee ***,the marked heterogeneity between the included studies and poor QOE limits any meaningful cross sectional comparisons between ***,well designed studies are necessary to determine the changes and outcomes of hindfoot alignment following TKA.

Impact of Beijing’s“Coal to Electricity”program on ambient PM_(2.5) and the associated reactive oxygen species(ROS)

The Beijing“Coal to Electricity”program provides a unique opportunity to explore air quality impacts by replacing residential coal burning with electrical *** this study,the atmospheric ROS(Gas-phase ROS and Particle-phase ROS,abbreviated to G-ROS and P-ROS)were measured by an online instrument in parallel with concurrent PM_(2.5) sample collections analyzed for chemical composition and cellular ROS in a baseline year(Coal Use Year-CUY)and the first year following implementation of the“Coal to Electricity”program(Coal Ban Year-CBY).The results showed PM_(2.5) concentrations had no significant difference between the two sampling periods,but the activities of G-ROS,P-ROS,and cellular ROS in CBY were 8.72 nmol H_(2)O_(2)/m^(3),9.82 nmol H 2 O 2/m 3,and 2045.75μg UD/mg PM higher than in *** sources were identified by factor-analysis from the chemical components of PM_(2.5).Secondary sources(SECs)were the dominant source of PM_(2.5) in the two periods,with 15.90%higher contribution in CBY than in *** Emission&Coal Combustion sources(Ind.&CCs),mainly from regional transport,also increased significantly in *** contributions of Aged Sea Salt&Residential Burning sources to PM_(2.5) decreased 5.31% from CUY to *** correlation results illustrated that Ind.&CCs had significant positive correlations with atmospheric ROS,and SECs significantly associated with cellular ROS,especially nitrates(r=0.626,p=0.000).Therefore,the implementation of the“Coal to Electricity”program reduced PM_(2.5) contributions from coal and biomass combustion,but had little effect on the improvement of atmospheric and cellular ROS.

Volume is an important attribute used in many forest management *** from 83 fixed-area plots located in central New Brunswick,Canada,are used to examine how different measures of stand-level diameter and height influence volume prediction using a stand-level variant of Honer's(1967)volume *** density was included in the models(Volume=f(Diameter,Height,Density))choice of diameter measure was more important than choice of height *** density was not included(Volume=f(Diameter,Height)),the opposite was *** models with density included,moment-based estimators of stand diameter and height performed better than all other *** models without density,largest tree estimators of stand diameter and height performed better than other *** overall best equation used quadratic mean diameter,Lorey's height,and density(root mean square error=5.26 m^3·ha^(-1);1.9%relative error).The best equation without density used mean diameter of the largest trees needed to calculate a stand density index of 400 and the mean height of the tallest 400 trees per ha(root mean square error=32.08 m^(3)·ha^(-1);11.8%relative error).The results of this study have some important implications for height subsampling and LiDAR-derived forest inventory analyses.
