Inter-center variation in the efficiency of sperm DNA damage reduction following density gradient centrifugation

This was a prospective multicenter study aiming at comparing the efficiency of sperm selection by density gradient centrifugation (DGC) in reducing sperm DNA fragmentation (sDF) in different ART centers. The study was designed using 290 semen samples collected from 10 different ART centers performing artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization and blind assessment of sDF at the University facilities. The results showed that while there was a significant reduction in the sDF levels in sperm isolated from the gradient centrifuged pellet (DGC) compared to neat semen samples (Nss), there was also significant inter-center variability in the efficiency to reduce sDF values by DGC (78.5% to 29.2%). surprisingly, for some patients, the level of sDF actually increased following sperm selection. The main conclusions derived from this study were that 1) isolation of sperm from the gradient pellet by DGC must be performed using validated, optimized protocols;2) routine comparison of sDF values in Nss semen and in processed sperm after DGC or swim-up must be recommended as part of the internal quality control (QC) of ART laboratories to test the efficacy of sperm processing;and 3) sDF values in processed spermatozoa should be obtained to compare with the pregnancy rate when insemination or fertilization is about to be performed, otherwise, attempts to predict pregnancy outcome from sDF could be biased or are essentially meaningless.

There has been an increase of community studies that incorporate the use of functional diversity indices. The incorporation of these indices in the analysis of marine communities is recent, however, could contribute with relevant information about the health of those communities. The lagoon of la Paz is a body of water located in la Paz, B.C.s., México. Despite its regional importance, there are not recent studies about its fish communities. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to analyze the temporal and spatial structure of the functional diversity of fish communities associated to soft bottoms, from August 2016 to July 2017, as well as important environmental variables. Functional diversity indices showed significant differences between months. spatial analysis did not show significant differences perhaps due to low variability of the type of substrate. Temperature showed temporal differences as well. Therefore, temperature may be a limiting environmental variable for many fish species inhabiting coastal lagoons.

Characterization of Breast Cancer Radiofrequency Ablation Assisted with Magnetic Nanoparticles: In silico and in Vitro study

The effectiveness of breast cancer ablation by radiofrequency (RF) has been associated to the capacity of concentrating the electromagnetic energy in the tumor region, our group has proposed that this condition could be modulated by appropriate RF exposure cycle times as well as modification of tissue electrical conductivity. The aim of this work was to evaluate analytical and experimental optimal exposure cycle times to induce tissue ablation by RF assisted with magnetic nanoparticles. The study was conducted both analytically by multiphysics simulation of the induced currents in cancer tissue given a magnetron source and experimentally by the observation of hyperthermic effects induced in agar phantoms by a magnetron device by the use of RF assisted with magnetic nanoparticles. The temperature showed significant increases in short periods of time, and was clearly higher under the condition with nanoparticles. Appropriate RF exposure cycle times as well as modification of tissue electrical conductivity by magnetic nanoparticles seems suitable factors to modulate the electromagnetic energy in tumoral regions.

The social Conditions in the Genesis of Preeclampsia

This article highlights the importance of preeclampsia as a global public health problem and the lack of a satisfactory model to explain its genesis. scientific advances relevant to the placental pathophysiology, which have resulted in a deeper understanding of the immunological mechanisms associated to preeclampsia and have been translated into better treatment options, are also highlighted, although to date these approaches cannot explain the origin of the disease. From a theoretical approach underpinned by the concepts related to the social determinants of the health, and specifically from current psychosocial epidemiology, an alternative approach that gives account for the genesis of preeclampsia is proposed. The proposal is based in the scientific literature as well as in the work of the authors;it takes as references unfavorable socioeconomic and psychosocial conditions in pregnant women, linking these conditions to a series of failed adaptive biological processes closely related to an ineffective allostatic response by the body, which ultimately determines the occurrence of the disease.

The knowledge of the soil quality plays a vital role in the agricultural sector. Despite its importance, there is scarce scientific information concerning this regard. The objective of this research is to develop a methodology to identify and select the most appropriate indicators of soil Quality Index (sQI) in a region with high agricultural activity. For its conformation, a descriptive statistical analysis and a Pearson correlation matrix were performed and the indicators that showed greater variation were identified using a Principal Components Analysis (PCA). A sensitivity analysis was carried out and the most sensible soil indicators of?sQI?were identified. This statistical procedure was also used to specify the weights of the indicators in?sQI. The variables resulting from the multiparametric statistical analysis were pH, organic matter, sodium, calcium, iron, zinc, cation exchange capacity and electrical conductivity. The robustness of the?sQI?obtained in this study was demonstrated through simulations carried out by the numerical optimization through simplex method. The soil Quality Index range obtained (0.54 - 0.75) locates Culiacan Valley soils as moderate/high quality.

Cancer patient care requires a multi-disciplinary approach and multiple medical and ethical *** care during a pandemic health crisis requires prioritising the use of resources for patients with a greater chance of survival,especially in developing *** coronavirus disease 2019 crisis has generated new challenges given that cancer patients are normally not prioritised for admission in critical care ***,the development of new cancer drugs and novel adjuvant/neoadjuvant protocols has dramatically improved the prognosis of cancer patients,resulting in a more complex decision-making when prioritising intensive care in pandemic *** this context,it is essential to establish an effective and transparent communication between the oncology team,critical care,and emergency units to make the best decisions,considering the principles of justice and ***,cancer treatment protocols must be adapted to prioritise according to oncologic response and *** technologies are powerful tools to optimise cancer care during pandemics,and we must adapt quickly to this new scenario of clinical care and *** this new challenging pandemic scenario,multi-disciplinary work and effective communication between clinics,technology,science,and ethics is the key to optimising clinical care of cancer patients.

Clipping of lateral Posterior Choroidal In-traventricular Aneurysm Related to Ruptured Temporal Arteriovenous Malformation: Case Report

Background: Intraventricular cerebral aneurysms are uncommon brain vascular disease in general population. The previous reported cases point with more frequency to Moyamoya disease as the main factor to originate aneurysms in the choroidal arteries. Those related to an AVM are even rarer and only two cases have been previously reported. Aim: To discuss the unusual location of this aneurysm, its relationship to other conditions and the type of treatment. Case Presentation: We present the case of a patient with a non-ruptured intraventricular aneurysm of lateral posterior choroidal artery related to a ruptured right temporal arteriovenous malformation, who was successfully treated by clipping immediately, after resection of the malformation. Conclusion: Intraventricular choroidal artery aneurysm is a rare pathology. Its deep location makes the treatment challenging but mandatory due to the high probability of bleeding, especially those flow-related to an arteriovenous malformation.

strong>Background: strong>Burns is one of the most common and severe forms of trauma, as they cause an alteration in the protective barrier exerted by the skin. The objective of this work is to describe the bacterial pathogens that cause infections in the different body segments as well as to know the susceptibility in patients with burns during a period of two years. strong>Methods:strong> This study was conducted over a period of 2 years, January 2017 to January 2019. The analysis of the isolated microbiological agents was obtained from culture samples in different anatomic areas. The variables were measured in the general population and also by groups, considering: age, sex, TBsA with Wallace's rule of nine, anatomic area affected, type of burn, depth of burn, microorganism reported in cultures, antibiotics empirically administered and mortality rate. strong>Results: strong>Regardless of the anatomical segment studied, the most frequently isolated microorganism was Pseudomonas aeruginosa. strong>Conclusions:strong> Identification of the microorganisms that cause infection reduces the hospital stay, as well as the admission to the ICU. A fundamental research guideline is to pay more attention to the post-burn consequences, and the sequelae and functional limitations that it entails, since few since few studies focus on this aspect.
