Melatonin, the pineal gland hormone, has been considered as a central hypotension factor. However their roles in the regulation of the human blood pressure and its possible use as antihyper-tensive drug have not been fully determined. The objective of this trial was to determine the effect of melatonin on blood pressure morning increase and a peripheral vasoconstriction challenge in healthy volunteers. Twelve healthy male volunteers were included in a prospective, comparative, randomized, crossover trial in which changes on blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) after the first morning orthostatism and endovenous norepinephrine (NE) infusion were measured one hour after the administration of placebo (PL) or 10 mg of melatonin in double blind conditions. Melatonin blunted the effects of the first orthostatism on BP and HR. Melatonin also reduces the pressor effect of NA. One concludes that melatonin has central and peripheral hypotensive effects that support a potential role of this hormone in cardiovascular therapeutics.

An Epidemiologic Study of Depressive Symptoms among Cardiometabolic Department Patients in México

Background. This study estimated the prevalence of depressive symptoms among cardiometabolic department patients in México. Methods. To identify patients with depressive symptoms, we used the Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI). We analyzed data from consecutive adult patients who attended during a year to a Cardiometabolic Department in México and described the demographic, metabolic and vascular status differences between depressive and non-depressive patients. The estimates are based on a total of 180 patients aged 22 to 83 years. Results. There was a depressive symptoms prevalence rate of 60.5%. Compared with non-depressive patients, depressive patients were more likely to be obese, and to have dysglucemia, hypercholesterolemia, hypoalphalipoproteinemia, microalbuminuria, high uric acid levels, carotid atherosclerosis, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Conclusions. Our data suggest that prevalence of depression is elevated among cardiometabolic patients in México. Depression probably plays a role in cardiometabolic physiopathogenic, and must be intentionally assessed in cardiometabolic patients in order to treat it and to improve the cardiometabolic treatment response and adherence.

The impact of lag effects produced by disturbances on primary production has been a major concern among ecologists during the last *** and extreme climatic events are imposing drastic reductions in radial growth of trees as evidenced in tree-rings series Dendrochronological samples are obtained at tree level but analyzed at an aggregated scale(i.e.,mean chronologies),although aggregating tree-ring chronology on a regional scale may reduce the possibility of studying the variability of individual tree response to drought,by amplifying the average population ***,we conducted experimental research in which 370 trees of 5 species were analyzed to assess the potential statistical and scaling issues that may occur when using regressionbased methods to analyze ecosystem responses to *** legacy effects were quantified using individual and aggregated ***,lag effects were validated using confidence and prediction intervals to identify values falling outside the certainty of the climate-growth model Individual scale legacy effects contrasted with confidence intervals were commonly distributed across species but were scarce when compared with prediction *** analysis of aggregated scale legacies detected significant growth reductions when validated using prediction intervals;however,individual scale legacy lag effects were not *** finding directly contrasts the results obtained when using an aggregated *** results provide empirical evidence on how aggregating ecological data to infer processes that emerge from an individual scale can lead to distorted *** therefore encourage the use of individual based statistical and ecological procedures to analyze tree rings as a means of further understanding the ecosystem responses to disturbances.
