There are previous studies of ageing hair and scalp in Caucasians and some Asians, such as Koreans and Japanese. however, the characteristics of scalp and hair have not yet been studied in Chinese, the largest population in the world, especially in terms of ageing. The purpose of this study is to investigate ageing features in Chinese women’s hair and scalp. Methods: In total, 1343 women in China aged 20 to 65 participated in this research. Hair density and diameter were measured and analysed with Folliscope®. Hair color and scalp conditions such as dandruff and erythema were evaluated through microscopic images. Measuring equipment was also used to detect scalp water content, barrier function and sebum secretion. Results: Hair density decreased gradually with ageing, while hair diameter peaked at 40s. The color of hair became bright with ageing because of gray hair and color fading. The degree of scalp sebum and dandruff was higher at younger ages. Interestingly, scalp erythema became more severe with ageing. Conclusion: This study shows the physical and physiological changes of Chinese women’s hair and scalp. Most aging features (hair diameter, scalpsebum contents, dandruff and erythema) were noticeable in their 40s, but hair density began to decline in their 30s. This first study of aging hair and scalp in Chinese women would be helpful for understanding the ageing phenomenon and development of hair and scalp care products.

Long term exposure of skin to high temperature induces activation of transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1(TRPV-1), as well as increase of matrix metalloprotease 9(MMP-9), which breaks down extracellular matrix in skin. Thus, along with photo-aging, heat also accelerates skin-aging as a long term effect. Here, heat-absorbing substances with heat energy-blocking effects were screened, and the blockage rate was calculated as "Thermal Protection Factor(TPF)". Herbal plant extracts such as Prunus Mume fruit extract and Chamaecyparis Obtusa polysaccharide were able to reduce skin damage by reducing TRPV-1 activation, heat-induced MMP-9 expression and other heat-induced inflammatory responses such as monocyte chemoattractant protein-1(MCP-1) expression. Also, a cream containing heat-absorbing and modulating actives showed statistically significant skin elasticity and redness-controlling effects in a clinical study.

Efficient nonlinear companding scheme for substantial reduction in peak-to-average power ratio of OFDM

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM)produces a high peak-to-average power ratio(PAPR) that adversely affects high-speed OFDM data transmission. In order to reduce the high PAPR, an efficient nonlinear companding transform(NCT) function is proposed. With the proposed NCT function,the compression and expansion weights can be applied independently with suitably chosen function parameter values. As a result, the proposed function can easily maintain the average signal power approximately unchanged during the companding *** this regard, the proposed function is superior to previously proposed schemes. Also, the simulations show the outstanding PAPR reduction performance of the proposed function. It is demonstrated that the proposed scheme performs well with nonlinear transmitter amplifiers and delivers superior error performance, compared with error function and exponential function based schemes.

Common bile duct stones on multidetector computed tomography:Attenuation patterns and detectability

AIM:To investigate the attenuation patterns and detectability of common bile duct(CBD) stones by multidetector computed tomography(MDCT).METhoDS:Between March 2010 and February 2012,191 patients with suspicion of CBD stones undergoing both MDCT and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) were enrolled and reviewed *** attenuation patterns of CBD stones on MDCT were classified as heavily calcified,radiopaque,less radiopaque,or *** association between the attenuation patterns of CBD stones on MDCT and stone type consisting of pure cholesterol,mixed cholesterol,brown pigment,and black pigment and the factors related to the detectability of CBD stones by MDCT were ***:MDCT showed CBD stones in 111 of 130 patients in whom the CBD stones were demonstrated by ERCP with 85.4% *** attenuation patterns of CBD stones on MDCT were heavily calcified 34(26%),radiopaque 31(24%),less radiopaque 46(35%),and undetectable 19(15%).The radiopacity of CBD stones differed significantly according to stone type(P < 0.001).From the receiver operating characteristic curve,stone size was useful for the determination of CBD stone by MDCT(area under curve 0.779,P < 0.001) and appropriate cut-off stone size on MDCT was 5 *** factors related to detectability of CBD stones on MDCT were age,stone type,and stone size on multivariate analysis(P < 0.05).CONCLUSION:The radiopacity of CBD stones on MDCT differed according to stone *** type and stone size were related to the detectability by MDCT,and appropriate cut-off stone size was 5 mm.

BACKGROUND Retroperitoneal sarcoma(RPS) is a rare malignancy arising from mesenchymal cells that most commonly presents as an abdominal mass and is associated with poor *** several studies have assessed the survival benefits of wide excision,few have reported detailed methods for achieving wide excision in patients with *** To describe our experience with multidisciplinary surgical resection of RPS using intra-and extra-pelvic *** Multidisciplinary surgery is an anatomical approach that combines intra-and extra-peritoneal access within the same surgery to achieve complete RPS *** retrospective review of the records of patients who underwent multidisciplinary surgery for RPS analyzed surgical and survival *** Eight patients underwent 10 intra-and extra-pelvic surgical resections,and their median mass size was 12.75 cm(range,6-45.5 cm).Using an intrapelvic approach,laparoscopy-assisted surgery was performed in four cases and laparotomy surgery in *** an extrapelvic approach,ilioinguinal and posterior approaches were used in four cases each,and the prone position and midline skin incision were shared in *** patients’ RPS masses were removed completely,and four achieved R0 resection through intra-and extra-pelvic *** median estimated blood loss was 2000 m L(range,300-20000 m L) and the median hospitalization was 12.6 d(range,9-69 d).Reoperation was needed in two patients(one for wound necrosis and the other for bowel perforation and wound necrosis).The median overall survival rate and median progression-free survival were 64.6 and 13.7 mo,*** RPS is therapeutically challenging because of its location and high risk of ***,intra-and extra-pelvic surgical approaches can improve the macroscopic security of the surgical margin.

Diurnal Variation of Tropical Convection during TOGA COARE IOP

Diurnal variation of tropical convection and kinematic and thermodynamic conditions was investigated for different large-scale environments of the convectively active and inactive periods by using satellite observations and surface measurements during the Intensive Observation Period （IOP） of the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere/Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment （TOGA/COARE）. During the convectively active period, the features of nocturnal convection appear in vertical profiles of convergence, vertical velocity, heat source, and moisture sink. The specific humidity increases remarkably in the middle troposphere at dawn. On the other hand, the altitude of maximum convergence and that of the upward motion is lower during the convectively inactive period. The specific humidity peaks in the lower troposphere in the daytime and decreases in the middle troposphere. Spectral analyses of the time series of the infrared （IR） brightness temperature （TBB） and amounts of rainfall suggest multiscale temporal variation with a prominent diurnal cycle over land and oceanic regions such as the Intensive Flux Array （IFA） and the South Pacific Convergence Zone （SPCZ）. Over land, the daily maximum of deep convection associated with cloud top temperature less than 208 K appears at midnight due to the daytime radiative heating and the sea-land breeze. Over the ocean, convection usually tends to occur at dawn for the convectively active period while in the afternoon during the inactive period. Comparing the diurnal variation of convection with large-scale variables, the authors inferred that moisture in the middle troposphere contributes mostly to the development of nocturnal convection over the ocean during the convectively active period.
