Nano CuO/g-C_3N_4 sheets-based ultrafiltration membrane with enhanced interfacial affinity,antifouling and protein separation performances for water treatment application

To improve the interfacial affinity and antifouling properties of polyphenylsulfone(PPSU)membrane, nano CuO/g-C3 N4(g-CN) sheets were synthesized via facile calcination route as one pot synthesis method. The uniformly assembled nanohybrid fillers, CuO on g-CN sheets were confirmed by using XRD, TEM, EDX and FTIR analysis. The non-solvent induced phase inversion technique was used to fabricate the nanohybrid ultrafiltration(UF)membranes by doping different concentration(0.5–1 wt.%) of nano CuO/g-C_3 N_4(g-CN)sheets within the PPSU matrix. The results of contact angle, atomic force microscopy,energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy reveal that surface structure and physico-chemical properties of nanohybrid membrane plays lead role in solute interaction and rejection compared to bare membrane, M0. Furthermore, the interfacial affinity of membrane was explored in detail via surface free energy, spreading coefficient, wetting tension and reversible work of adhesion analysis. Nanohybrid UF membrane, with 0.5% of the filler(M1)displayed remarkable permeation flux of 202, 131 l/m2/hr for pure water and protein solution, respectively while maintaining a high protein rejection(96%). Moreover, the exceptional dispersion of the nanosheets in the polymer matrix enhanced FRR(79%) and decreased the overall resistance of M1 compared to the pristine membrane(M0). Overall results suggest that the incorporation of nano sheets is a facile modification technique which improves the comprehensive membrane performance and holds a great potential to be further explored for water treatment.

Threshold Chloride Concentrations and Passivity Breakdown of Rebar Steel in Real Concrete Solution at Different pH Conditions with the Addition of Glycerol

Addition of glycerol as a viscosity modifier in concrete is proposed to decrease the permeability of corrosion- inducing ions such as chloride and sulfate. In addition to controlling the permeability of concrete, glycerol could perform as an inhibitor of corrosion of rebar steel. Cyclic polarization studies were carried out on metallographically polished rebar steel specimens in actual concrete solutions at two different pH conditions （pH 12,5 and 9.0） and different chloride concentrations. The threshold concentration of chloride for passivity breakdown at pH 12.5 was greater than 50 × 10-3 mol/l in the absence of glycerol addition. The threshold increased to 81 × 10-3 mol/l upon addition of 2 wt% glycerol. The threshold chloride concentration for passivity breakdown in pH 9.0 cement solution was 0.2 × 10-3 mol/l without glycerol addition. No beneficial effect of glycerol was observed in the low pH condition. However, glycerol enhanced the passivation kinetics of the rebar steel in saturated cement solution, but did not affect the electronic properties of the passive layer. The passive layers exhibited n-type semiconductivity with a charge carrier density in the range of 2-7.5× 10^20 cm-3. Polarization of the specimens to potentials is higher than oxygen evolution potential, resulted in transition top-type semiconducting character due to an accumulation of holes. This phenomenon could be related to the passivity breakdown.

Background With some 134,073,166 people living in endemic communities at risk of infection[1],Nigeria is the most endemic country in Africa and requires preventive chemotherapy(PC)for a total of 26.3 million persons[2].The National Schistosomiasis Elimination Programme(NSCHEP),with the support of international partners,has been implementing PC in Nigeria since 2009 and most recently will need to revise its current strategy(Additional file 1).For example,the new World Health Organization(WHO)guideline has six key recommendations that will dramatically change the implementation of schistosomiasis elimination in endemic countries[3].However,its impact and programmatic implications will vary from country to country,hence the need for a country-specific analysis.

Cancer cachexia(CC)is a devastating syndrome characterized by weight loss,reduced fat mass and muscle mass that affects approximately 80%of cancer patients and is responsible for 22%-30%of cancer-associated *** underlying mechanisms for the development of CC are crucial to advance therapies to treat CC and improve cancer *** is a multi-organ syndrome that results in extensive skeletal muscle and adipose tissue wasting;however,CC can impair other organs such as the liver,heart,brain,and bone as well.A considerable amount of CC research focuses on changes that occur within the muscle,but cancer-related impairments in other organ systems are ***,metabolic changes in organ systems other than muscle may contribute to ***,the purpose of this review is to address degenerative mechanisms which occur during CC from a whole-body *** the information known about metabolic changes that occur in response to cancer is necessary to develop and enhance therapies to treat *** much of the current evidences in CC are from pre-clinical models we should note the majority of the data reviewed here are from preclinical models.

Dear Editor, Understanding how Kranz anatomy develops in C4 plants is a critical part of the current worldwide effort to transfer C4 photosynthesis into C3 plants, including rice. Recently, it was proposed that the Kranz architecture that supports C4 photosynthesis in maize leaves is an extension of the endodermal program, which is active in roots, stems, and petioles, and is ubiquitous in angiosperms （Slewinski et al., 2012; Slewinski, 2013）.

Effect of a 26-month floorball training on male elderly's cardiovascular fitness, glucose control, body composition, and functional capacity

Background: Floorball training offers a motivating and socially stimulating team activity for older adults, and 12 weeks of floorball training twice a week among men aged 65—76 years have been shown to have positive effects on a number of physiological parameters important for health. However, the effect of long-term participation in floorball training among male elderly has not been investigated. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of 26-month self-organized regular participation in floorball training on cardiovascular fitness, body composition, blood lipids, glucose control, and physical function among recreationally active men aged 66—78 ***: After completing a 12-week randomized and controlled intervention with floorball and petanque training in the autumn 2014 or spring2015, 15 subjects chose to participate in floorball training(floorball group, FG), whereas 16 subjects resumed their usual lifestyle(control group,CG). FG took part in self-organized floorball training 1.7 sessions of 40 min/week, and CG continued their normal recreationally active lifestyle during a 26-month follow-up period. At baseline and after the follow-up period subjects were tested for cardiovascular fitness, glucose control(resting blood samples), body composition dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA-scanning), and functional ***: In FG, the decline in maximal oxygen uptake(VO_(2max)) during the follow-up period was lower(242 ± 379 ml/min, p = 0.01), blood glycosylated hemoglobin(HbA1c) increased less(—1.6 ± 2.9 mmol/l, p = 0.02), and leg bone mineral density increased more(0.03 ± 0.05 g/cm^2,p = 0.02) than those in CG. The effects on body mass, total lean body mass, fat mass, blood lipids, and physical function were similar in FG and ***: Approximately twice weekly floorball sessions with 40 min/session over 26-month appear to reduce age-related decline in cardiovascular fitness and glucose control and improve leg bone mineral density,

Hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties of marine halophyte luminetzera racemosa bark extract in CCl_4 induced hepatotoxicity

Objective:To identify the hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity of luminetzera racemosa （l racemosa）bark ***:Wistar albino rats were divided into 6 groups:Group 1 served as control;Group 2 served as hepatotoxin（CCl4 treated） group;Group 3 served as positive control（Silymarin） treated groups;Group 4,5 and 6 served as（100,200 and 300 mg/kg bw p.o.） l racemosa bark extract treated ***,in vitro antioxidant indexes,including DPPH, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity（HRSA）,NO,ferric reducing antioxidant power（FRAP）,lipid hydroperoxide（lPO） and super oxide dismutase（SOD） were also analyzed in the bark extract. Results:The results suggested that,the level of serum glutamate oxyloacetic transaminase（SCOT）, serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase（SGPT）,alkaline phosphatise（AlP）,bilurubin,cholesterol, sugar and lactate dehydrogenase（lDH） were significantly（P<0.05） increased in hepatotoxin treated rats when compared with the control ***,the maximum reduction of SGOT[（225.36±13.65） IU/l],SGPT[（96.85±17.36） IU/l],AlP[（315.37±17.16） IU/l],bilirubin[（2.97±0.46） mg/dl], cholesterol[（163.73±17.54） mg/dl],sugar[（127.35±27.35） mg/dl]and lDH[（1 784.00±268.36） IU/l] were observed with 300 mg/kg bw of bark extract treated *** scores showed that,no visible changes were observed with high dose（300 mg/kg bw） of bark extract treated rats except mild fatty *** in vitro antioxidant assays showed that,the IC50 values were observed as（44.17±6.87）μ/ml,（42.45±2.81）μg/ml,（62.37±3.98）μg/ml,（54.24±3.09）μg/ml, （87.25±5.90）μg/ml and（71.54±5.42）μg/ml for ***,NO,FRAP,lPO and SOD radical scavenging activities,***:The hepatoprotective and antioxidant activities of the bark extract might be to the presence of unique chemical classes such as flavonoids, alkaloids and polyphenols.

Free radical scavenging and reducing power of lawsonia inermis ***

Objective:To determine the antioxidant activity,total phenolic and flavonoid content of Petroleum ether extract（PE）,Dichloromethane extract（DCM）,Ethanol extract（ET） and aqueous extract（AQ） of henna ***:Total antioxidant assay（phosphomolybenum method）, DPPH radical scavenging assay,reducing power assay and lipid peroxidation inhibition assay were used to ascertain the potential of seeds as an ***:In all the assays carried out ET showed a greater potential to scavenge DPPH radical,reduce MO（Ⅳ） to MO（Ⅴ） complex and Fe（Ⅲ） to Fe（Ⅱ） and to inhibit lipid *** IC50 of ET was far greater than that of the standard,ascorbic acid（AS） in the lipid peroxidation *** activity of AQ was lesser when compared with that of ET but greater than PE and *** amount of phenolics and flavonoids were present in higher amounts in ET followed by *** amounts of phenolics were detected in PE and DCM,but the amount of flavonoids were below the detection *** study showed that the antioxidant activity and the concentrations of phenolics and flavonoids are proportionate to each ***:Ethanolic extract of henna seeds are efficient antioxidants,which can be utilized for further isolation of active compounds and pharmaceutical applications.

1995～2010年，研究者在丹麦人i：16778333人中，入选无心房颤动且无诱发疾病（如心力衰竭、缺血性心脏病、糖尿病、甲状腺功能亢进症且无接受其他降压药物）的患者，探讨降压药物[单独服用血管紧张素转换酶抑制弃l（ACEI）、血管紧张素受体拮抗弃j（ARB）、8受体阻滞荆、利尿剂和钙拮抗剂]是否与心房颤动、脑卒中的发生率相关。按照1：1配比病例对照研究，分别以单独服用ACEI和ARB为对照，入选性别、年龄匹配的单独服用p受体阻滞剂、利尿剂、钙拮抗荆的患者。结果显示，与p受体阻滞剂和利尿荆比较，ACEI和ARB与较低的心房颤动风险相关，与脑卒中无关。与8受体阻滞剂比较，ACEI和ARB的风险为0．12（95％C10．10～0．15）和0．10（O．07～0．14）；与利尿剂比较，为0．5l（O．44～0．59）和0．43（O．32～0．58）（均P〈0．05），而与钙拮抗剂比较差异无统计学意义。研究表明肾素血管紧张素系统的激活除了能够控制血压外，还与心房颤动的风险降低有关。
