New Zealand, as a nation, has been in existence for less than two centuries—whether one dates its assumption of sovereignty to the 1835 Declaration of Independence by the Confederation of United Tribes, the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi between Maori and the British Crown, or its attainment of Dominion status in 1907. The question of a separate cultural identity for this post-colonial, multi-cultural country has therefore always been a complex one, and one which has had a strong influence on much of our artistic expression to date: particularly, perhaps because of its inherent tendency towards the self-analysis only really possible within language, literature. The fact that our most famous locally born writer to date, Katherine Mansfield, specialised in the short story has certainly helped to establish that as a vital genre here. This paper accordingly takes four successive anthologies of local short fiction—Frank Sargeson’s Speaking for Ourselves (1945), Michael Morrissey’s The New Fiction (1985), Warwick Bennett and Patrick Hudson’s Rutherford’s Dreams (1995), and Tina Shaw and jack Ross’s Myth of the twenty-firstCentury (2006)—and attempts to characterise their respective, overlapping visions of New Zealand identity by conducting a close reading of a representative story from each of them. The essay concludes with a call for a new anthology which might attempt to give expression to this series of gradual erosions of our initial cultural certainties into something more adequate to the realities of our place in the world, both geographically and culturally.

Zinc is generally considered to be one of the most promising materials to be used in biodegradable implants,and many zinc alloys have been optimized to improve implant biocompatibility,degradation,and mechanical ***,long-term degradation leads to the prolonged presence of degradation products,which risks foreign body ***,we investigated the in vivo biocompatibility and degradation of a biodegradable Zn-Mg-Fe alloy osteosynthesis system in the frontal bone,mandible,and femur in beagles for 1 *** of the routine blood,biochemical,trace element,and histological analyses of multiple organs,peripheral blood CD4/CD8a levels,and serum interleukin 2 and 4 levels showed good biocompatibility of the Zn-Mg-Fe *** content analysis revealed zinc accumulation in adjacent bone tissue,but not in the liver,kidney,and spleen,which was related to the degradation of the Zn-Mg-Fe *** alloy demonstrated a uniform slowing degradation rate in *** degradation differences in the frontal bone,mandible,and femur were *** degradation products included zinc oxide[ZnO],zinc hydroxide[Zn(OH)_(2)],hydrozincite[Zn_(5)(OH)_(6)(CO_(3))_(2)],and hopeite[Zn_(3)(PO_(4))_(2)⋅4H_(2)O].The good biocompatibility and degradation properties of the Zn-Mg-Fe alloy render it a very attractive osteosynthesis system for clinical applications.

Longwall mining has a significant influence on gas wells located within longwall chain *** subsidence and abutment pressure induced by longwall mining can cause excessive stresses and deformations in gas well *** the gas well casings are compromised or ruptured,natural gas could migrate into the mine workings,potentially causing a fire or *** the current safety regulations,the gas wells in the chain pillars have to be either plugged or protected by adequate coal *** current regulations for gas well pillar design are based on the 1957 Pennsylvania gas well pillar *** study provided guidelines for gas well pillars by considering their support area and overburden depth as well as the location of the gas wells within the *** the guidelines were developed for room-andpillar mining under shallow cover,they are no longer applicable to modern longwall coal mining,particularly,under deep *** well casing of failures have occurred even though the chain pillars for the gas wells met the requirements by the 1957 *** study,conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH),presents seven cases of conventional gas wells penetrating through longwall chain pillars in the Pittsburgh Coal *** study results indicate that overburden depth and pillar size are not the only determining factors for gas well *** other important factors include subsurface ground movement,overburden geology,weak floor,as well as the type of the construction of gas *** modeling was used to model abutment pressure,subsurface deformations,and the response of gas well *** study demonstrated that numerical models are able to predict with reasonable accuracy the subsurface deformations in the overburden above,within,and below the chain pillars,and the potential location and modes of gas well failures,thereby providing a more quantifiable approach to assess the stability of the gas wells in l

In the present study, the effect of 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside （AICAR） on long-chain fatty acid oxidation by hepatocytes isolated from suckled neonatal pig liver （a low ketogenic and lipogenic tissue） was tested Incubation of hepatocytes with AICAR （0.5 raM） in the presence of ] mM of carnitine and 10 mM of glucose for 1 hour at 37℃ had no significant effect on total [1-14C]-palrnitate （0.5 mM） oxidation （14CO2 and 14C-Acid soluble products （ASP））. Consistent with the fatty acid oxidation, carnitine palmitoyltransferase I activity and inhibition of its activity by malonyI-CoA （10 MM） assayed in cell homogenate also remained constant. However, addition of AICAR to the hepatocytes decreased 14CO2 production by 18% compared to control （p 〈 0.06）. The reduction of labeled carboxylic carbon accumulated in C02 caused a significant difference in distribution of oxidative products between 14C02 and 14C-ASP （p 〈 0.03） compared with the control. It was also noticed that acetyI-CoA carboxylase （ACC） was increased by AICAR （p 〈 0.03）, indicating that ACC might drive acetyI-CoA toward fatty acid synthesis pathway and induce an increase in distribution of fatty acid carbon to 14C-ASP. Addition of insulin to hepatocyte incubations with AICAR did not change the oxidative product distribution between CO2 and ASP, but further promoted ACC activity. The increased ACC activity was 70% higher than in the control group when citrate was absent in the reaction medium and was 30% higher when citrate was present in the medium. Our results suggest that AICAR may affect the distribution of metabolic products from fatty acid oxidation by changing ACC activity in hepatocyte isolated from suckled neonatal piglets; however, the basis for the increase in ACC activity elicited by AICAR is not apparent.
