The key risk factor for glaucoma is increased intraocular pressure (IOP). Glaucoma drainage devices implanted in theeye can reduce IOP and thus stop disease progression. However, most devices currently used in clinical practice arepassive and do not allow for postsurgical IOP control, which may result in serious complications such as hypotony (i.e.,excessively low IOP). To enable noninvasive IOP control, we demonstrate a novel, miniature glaucoma implant that willenable the repeated adjustment of the hydrodynamic resistance after implantation. This is achieved by integrating amagnetic microvalve containing a micropencil-shaped plug that is moved using an external magnet, thereby openingor closing fluidic channels. The microplug is made from biocompatible poly(styrene-block-isobutylene-block-styrene)(SIBS) containing iron microparticles. The complete implant consists of an SIBS drainage tube and a housing elementcontaining the microvalve and fabricated with hot embossing using femtosecond laser-machined glass molds. Usingin vitro and ex vivo microfluidic experiments, we demonstrate that when the microvalve is closed, it can providesufficient hydrodynamic resistance to overcome hypotony. Valve function is repeatable and stable over time. Due to itssmall size, our implant is a promising, safe, easy-to-implant, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery device.

Analysis of the meiosis in the F_1 hybrids of Longiflorum × Asiatic(LA) of lilies(Lilium) using genomic in situ hybridization

Longiflorum and Asiatic lilies of the genus Lilium of the family Liliaceae are two important groups of modem lily cultivars. One of the main trends of lily breeding is to realize introgression between these groups. With cut style pollination and embryo rescue, distant hybrids between the two groups have been obtained. However, the FI hybrids are highly sterile or some of them could produce a small number of 2n gametes, and their BC1 progenies are usually triploids. Dutch lily breeders have selected many cultivars from these BC1 progenies based on their variation. It is presumably suggested that such variation could be caused by intergenomic recombination and abnormal meiosis during gamete formation in F1 hybrids of Longiflorum × Asiatic （LA） hybrids in Lilium. Therefore, the meiotic process of ten F1 LA hybrids was cytologically investigated using genomic in situ hybridization and traditional cytological methods in the present research. The results showed that： at metaphase I, the homoeologous chromosome pairing among different F1 hybrids ranged from 2.0 to 11.4 bivalents formed by homoeologous chromosomes per pollen mother cell （PmC）, and very few multivalents, and even very few bivalents were formed by two chromosomes within one genome rather than homoeologous chromosomes in some PmCs; at anaphase I, all biva- lents were disjoined and most univalents were divided. Both the disjoined bivalents （half-bivalents） and the divided univalents （sister chromatids） moved to the opposite poles, and then formed two groups of chromosomes; because the two resulting half-bivalents retained their axes in the cell undisturbed, many crossover types, including single crossovers, three strand double crossovers, four strand double crossovers, four strand triple crossovers, and four strand multiple crossovers between the non-sister chromatids in the tetrads of bivalents, were clearly inferred by analyzing the breakpoints on the disjoined bivalents. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Indonesia:epidemiology,incidence,signs,and symptoms at presentation

Background: Asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) and urinary tract infections (UTI) during pregnancy may contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes. Diabetes mellitus (Dm) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDm) are considered to be important additional risk factor for ASB and UTI during pregnancy. Aims: To investigate differences in prevalence of ASB and incidence of UTI in pregnant women with and without Dm and GDm to inform ASB screening and treatment policies. methods: Data from 214 pregnant women who gave birth during 2010 at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Adelaide, Australia where cases were women with a clinical diagnosis of (G)Dm and controls were matched on date of birth. ASB was defined as the growth of at least 10e5 colony forming units/ml of one organism or any presence of group B streptococcus (GBS) at the first urine culture collected during pregnancy without complaints of a UTI. A clinical UTI was diagnosed by the treating physician, in combination with a positive urine culture it was defined as culture-confirmed UTI. Results: No significant differences in prevalence of ASB (5.6% and 3.7%;relative risk (RR) 1.50;95% confidence intervals (CI) 0.44 - 5.17), incidence of clinical UTI (4.7% and 11.2%;RR 0.42;95% CI 0.15 - 1.14) or culture-confirmed UTI (2.8% and 3.7%;RR 0.75;95% CI 0.17 - 3.27) between pregnant women with and without (G)Dm were present. No association was found between ASB and UTI. GBS was the most common causative organism of ASB in women with and without Dm (66.7% and 50.0%). Conclusion: In contrast with earlier research, no significant differences in prevalence of ASB or incidence of UTI was found between pregnant women with and without (G)Dm.

m TOR signaling in liver regeneration: Rapamycin combined with growth factor treatment

AIm: To investigate the effects of mammalian target of rapamycin(mT OR) inhibition on liver regeneration and autophagy in a surgical resection ***: C57BL/6 mice were subjected to a 70% partial hepatectomy(PH) and treated intraperitoneally every 24 h with a combination of the m TOR inhibitor rapamycin(2.5 mg/kg per day) and the steroid dexamethasone(2.0 mg/kg per day) in phosphate bufferedsaline(PBS) or with PBS alone as vehicle control. In the immunosuppressant group, part of the group was treated subcutaneously 4 h prior to and 24 h after PH with a combination of human recombinant interleukin 6(IL-6; 500 μg/kg per day) and hepatocyte growth factor(HGF; 100 μg/kg per day) in PBS. Animals were sacrificed 2, 3 or 5 d after PH and liver tissue and blood were collected for further analysis. Immunohistochemical staining for 5-Bromo-2'-deoxyuridine(Brd U) was used to quantify hepatocyte proliferation. Western blotting was used to detect hepatic microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3(LC3)-Ⅱ protein expression as a marker for autophagy. Hepatic gene expression levels of proliferation-, inflammation- and angiogenesisrelated genes were examined by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and serum bilirubin and transaminase levels were analyzed at the clinical chemical core facility of the Erasmus mC-University medical ***: m TOR inhibition significantly suppressed regeneration, shown by decreased hepatocyte proliferation(2% vs 12% Brd U positive hepatocyte nuclei at day 2, P more increased serum transaminase levels(aspartate aminotransferase 641 U/L vs 185 U/L at day 2, P = 0.02).
