Survival effects of antibiotic exposure during the larval and adult stages in the West Nile virus vector Culex pipiens

The ability of mosquitoes to transmit a pathogen is affected,among other factors,by their survival rate,which is partly modulated by their microbiota.Mosquito microbiota is acquired during the larval phase and modified during their development and adult feeding behavior,being highly dependent on environmental factors.Pharmaceutical residues including antibiotics are widespread pollutants potentially being present in mosquito breeding waters likely affecting their microbiota.Here,we used Culex pipiens mosquitoes to assess the impact of antibiotic exposure during the larval and adult stages on the survival rate of adult mosquitoes.Wild-collected larvae were randomly assigned to two treatments:larvae maintained in water supplemented with antibiotics and control larvae.Emerged adults were subsequently assigned to each of two treatments,fed with sugar solution with antibiotics and fed only with sugar solution(controls).larval exposure to antibiotics significantly increased the survival rate of adult females that received a control diet.In addition,the effect of adult exposure to antibiotics on the survival rate of both male and female mosquitoes depended on the number of days that larvae fed ad libitum in the laboratory before emergence.In particular,shorter larval ad libitum feeding periods reduced the survival rate of antibiotic-treated adult mosquitoes compared with those that emerged after a longer larval feeding period.These differences were not found in control adult mosquitoes.Our results extend the current understanding of the impact of antibiotic exposure of mosquitoes on a key component of vectorial capacity,that is the vector survival rate.

The variability of juvenile dispersal in an opportunistic raptor

The juvenile dispersal of raptors is a crucial stage that stretches from parental independence to the establishment of the first breeding area.Between 2012 and 2020,44 juvenile red kites Milvus milvus from the Spanish breeding population were tagged using GPS telemetry to study their dispersal.Juveniles left the parental breeding area at the end of their first summer and performed wandering movements throughout the Iberian Peninsula,returning to the parental breeding area the following year,repeating the same pattern until they settled in their first breeding area.We analyzed the mean distance from the nest,the maximum reached distances,and the traveled distances(daily and hourly)during the first 2 years of dispersal and compared them.despite the high individual variability,variables describing the dispersal movements of juveniles showed a decreasing trend during the second dispersal year:80% of individuals reached a shorter maximum distance in the second year,70% decreased their mean distance to the nest,65% decreased their hourly traveled distances,and 50% decreased their daily traveled distances.On the other hand,the red kites usually combined wandering movements with the establishment of temporary settlement areas(TSA).The average duration of settlement in the TSAs was 75±40 days(up to 182 days)and was located at 182±168 km from the nest.In those areas,juveniles used 781.0±1895.0 km^(2)(Kde 95%).Some of the TSAs were used by several individuals,which suggests that these areas might be good targets for conservation in future management plans.

A Note on Tropical Triangles in the Plane

We define transversal tropical triangles （affine and projective） and characterize them via six inequalities to be satisfied by the coordinates of the vertices. We prove that the vertices of a transversal tropical triangle are tropically independent and they tropically span a classical hexagon whose sides have slopes ∞, 0, 1. Using this classical hexagon, we determine a parameter space for transversal tropical triangles. The coordinates of the vertices of a transversal tropical triangle determine a tropically regular matrix. Triangulations of the tropical plane are obtained.

Wind effects on the migration routes of trans-Saharan soaring raptors： geographical, seasonal, and interspecific variation

Wind is among the most important environmental factors shaping birds' migration patterns. Birds must deal with the displacement caused by crosswinds and their behavior can vary according to different factors such as flight mode, migratory season, experience, and distance to goal areas. Here we analyze the relationship between wind and migratory movements of three raptor species which migrate by soaring-gliding flight: Egyptian vulture , booted eagle , and short-toed snake eagle . We analyzed daily migratory segments (i.e., the path joining consecutive roosting locations) using data recorded by GPS satellite telemetry. Daily movements of Egyptian vultures and booted eagles were significantly affected by tailwinds during both autumn and spring migrations. In contrast, daily movements of short-toed eagles were only significantly affected by tailwinds during autumn migration. The effect of crosswinds was significant in all cases. Interestingly, Egyptian vultures and booted eagles showed latitudinal differences in their behavior: both species compensated more frequently at the onset of autumn migration and, at the end of the season when reaching their wintering areas, the proportion of drift segments was higher. In contrast, there was a higher drift at the onset of spring migration and a higher compensation at the end. Our results highlight the effect of wind patterns on the migratory routes of soaring raptors, with different outcomes in relation to species, season, and latitude, ultimately shaping the loop migration patterns that current tracking techniques are showing to be widespread in many long distance migrants.

The precise control on the combination of multiple metal atoms in the structure of metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)endowed by reticular chemistry,allows the obtaining of materials with compositions that are programmed for achieving enhanced reactivity.The present work illustrates how through the transformation of MOFs with desired arrangements of metal cations,multi-metal spinel oxides with precise compositions can be obtained,and used as catalyst precursor for the reverse water-gas shift reaction.The differences in the spinel initial composition and structure,determined by neutron powder diffraction,influence the overall catalytic activity with changes in the process of in s itu formation of active,metal-oxide supported metal nanoparticles,which have been monitored and characterized with in situ X-ray diffraction and photoelectron spectroscopy studies.

A Proposal for Epistemological Errors detected in the Works of Newton, Darwin, Einstein, and descartes

Epistemological review uses neurosociology, clinical neurosociology, and the neuroquantic paradigm of some of the propositions made by Newton, Darwin, Einstein, and descartes. These propositions include: the law of universal gravitation based on Newton"s theory of gravity, Darwin"s theory of evolution, Einstein"s special theory of relativity, and descartes" philosophical proposition cogito ergo sum. This last proposition was considered to be an essential element of Western philosophy, as it was perceived to be the foundation for all knowledge. In all of these cases, possible problems of interpretation or construction have been detected and alternatives are proposed. Newton"s law was replaced by the general theory of relativity, but this also has some shortcomings. For Darwin, the hypothesis of eclosion has been proposed. For Einstein, the dimension "time" is eliminated and the concept of "space‐motion" is proposed. In the case of descartes, the author proposes that the person and the body do not have life. It is the cells and neurons that are alive and it is in the neurons where information or thoughts are generated, stored, and processed. Therefore, it is the neurons that exist.

Background:Loiasis is an uncommon and poorly understood parasitic disease outside endemic areas of Africa.The aim of this study was to describe the clinical and biological patterns and treatment of imported loiasis by sub-Saharan migrants diagnosed in Madrid,Spain.Methods:A retrospective study was conducted with sub-Saharan immigrants seen at the Tropical Medicine Unit of the Carlos III Hospital in Madrid,Spain,a reference center,over 19 years.Categorical variables were expressed as frequency counts and percentages.Continuous variables were expressed as the mean and standard deviation(SD)or median and interquartile range(IQR:Q3–Q1).Chi-square tests were used to assess the association between categorical variables.The measured outcomes were expressed as the odds ratio(OR)with a 95%confidential interval.Continuous variables were compared by Student’s t-tests or Mann-Whitney U tests.Binary logistic regression models were used.Pdered a statistically significant difference.Results:One hundred thirty-one migrants from tropical and subtropical areas with loiasis were identified.Forty-nine patients were male(37.4%).The migrants’mean age(±SD)was 42.3±17.3 years,and 124(94.7%)were from Equatorial Guinea.The median time(IQR)between arrival in Spain and the first consultation was 2(1–7)months.One hundred fifteen migrants had eosinophilia,and one hundred thirteen had hyper-IgE syndrome.Fifty-seven patients had pruritus(43.5%),and thirty patients had Calabar swelling(22.9%).Seventy-three patients had coinfections with other filarial nematodes(54.2%),and 58 migrants had only Loa loa infections(45.8%).One hundred two patients(77.9%)were treated;45.1%(46/102)patients were treated with one drug,and 54.9%(56/102)patients were treated with combined therapy.Adverse reactions were described in 14(10.7%)migrants.Conclusions:Our patients presented early clinical manifestations and few atypical features.Thus,physicians should systematically consider loiasis in migrants with a typical presentation.However,considering that 7

AIM：To determine the effects of peripheral corneal thickness（PCT）on dynamic contour tonometry（DCT）and Goldmann applanation tonometry（GAT）.METHODS：A cross-sectional study.We created a software which calculates the corneal contour（CC）as a function of the radius from the corneal apex to each pixel of the contour.The software generates a central circumference with a radius of 1 mm and the remainder of the cornea is segmented in 5 rings concentric with corneal apex being its diameter not constant around the corneal circumference as a consequence of the irregular CC but keeping constant the diameter of each ring in each direction of the contour.PCT was determined as the mean thickness of the most eccentric ring.Locally weighted scatterplot smoothing（LOWESS）regression was used to determine the pattern of the relationship between PCT and both DCT and GAT respectively.Thereafter,two multivariable linear regression models were constructed.In each of them,the dependant variable was intraocular pressure（IOP）as determined using GAT and DCT respectively.In both of the models the predictive variable was PCT though LOWESS regression pattern was used to model the relationship between the dependant variables and the predictor one.Age and sex were also introduced control variables along with their first-degree interactions with PCT.Main outcome measures include amount of IOP variation explained through regression models（R2）and regression coefficients（B）.RESULTS：Subjects included 109 eyes of 109 healthy individuals.LOWESS regression suggested that a 2nd-degree polynomial would be suitable to model the relationshipbetween both DCT and GAT with PCT.Hence PCT was introduced in both models as a linear and quadratic term.Neither age nor sex nor interactions were statistically significant in both models.For GAT model,R2was 17.14%（F=9.02;P=0.0002）,PCT linear term B was-1.163（95%CI：-1.163,-0.617）.PCT quadratic term B was 0.00081（95%CI：0.00043,0.00118）.For DCT model R2was 14.28%（F=9.29;P=0.0002）,PCT linear term B was-0.712（95%CI：-1.052,-0.37

Evolution in the formation of graphene nanocapsules from coal tar pitch

It has recently been reported that coal tar pitch(CTP)can be utilised as raw material for the production of graphene nanocapsules(GNCs)because it is formed by a great quantity of aromatic organic compounds(which promote the rearrangement of double bonds by a process of polymerisation).Due to the importance of graphene and the search for a non-expensive methodology to produce it,this work used CTP to synthesise GNCs using an in situ activation technique at low temperatures and evaluating the effect of the working temperature on the formation of such nanostructures.In other words,analysing the form of the particle as the temperature rises from 600 to 900℃.As result of the experimentation,powders were obtained and analysed by the techniques of X-Ray Diffraction,Raman Spectroscopy and Microscopy,employing Field Fmission Scanning Electron Microscopy by normal mode as well as by Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy and a High-Resolution Scanning Electron Microscopy.The results show that working with temperatures between 800 and 850℃promotes the production of GNCs,considering that their size reduces as the working temperature rises.
