Comparison of carbon-stock changes, eddycovariance carbon fluxes and model estimates in coastal Douglas-fir stands in British Columbia

Background： The global network of eddy-covariance （EC） flux-towers has improved the understanding of the terrestrial carbon （C） cycle, however, the network has a relatively limited spatial extent compared to forest inventory data and plots. developing methods to use inventory-based and EC flux measurements together with modeling approaches is necessary evaluate forest C dynamics across broad spatial extents. Methods： Changes in C stock change （AC） were computed based on repeated measurements of forest inventory plots and compared with separate measurements of cumulative net ecosystem productivity （~NEP） over four years （2003 - 2006） for Douglas-fir （Pseudotsuga menzies# var menziesil} dominated regeneration （HDF00）, juvenile （HDF88 and HDF90） and near-rotation （DF49） aged stands （6, 18, 20, 57 years old in 2006, respectively） in coastal British Columbia. AC was determined from forest inventory plot data alone, and in a hybrid approach using inventory data along with litter fall data and published decay equations to determine the change in detrital pools. These AC-based estimates were then compared with Y_NEP measured at an eddy-covariance flux-tower （EC-flux） and modelled by the Carbon Budget Model - Canadian Forest Sector （CBM-CFS3） using historic forest inventory and forest disturbance data. Footprint analysis was used with remote sensing, soils and topography data to evaluate how well the inventory plots represented the range of stand conditions within the area of the flux-tower footprint and to spatially scale the plot data to the area of the EC-flux and model based estimates, Results： The closest convergence among methods was for the juvenile stands while the largest divergences were for the regenerating clearcut, followed by the near-rotation stand. At the regenerating clearcut, footprint weighting of CBM-CFS3 TNEP increased convergence with EC flux Z_NEP, but not for AC. Serum prostate-specific antigen value adjusted for non-cancerous prostate tissue volume in patients undergoing radical prostatectomy： a new predictor of biochemical recurrence in localized or locally advanced prostate cancer

The aim of this study was to investigate the significance of serum prostate-specific antigen （PSA） value adjusted for total tumor volume （PSA/tumor volume） and serum PSA value adjusted for non-cancerous prostate tissue volume （NCPV）（PSA/NCPV） as a predictor of pathological findings and clinical outcome after radical prostatectomy. Clinical and pathological data of 407 patients （median age： 66.5 years; range： 41.8--85.7 years） were reviewed retrospectively. The median follow-up period was 18. I months （range： 1.0- 107.8 months）. Biochemical recurrence was defined as detectable PSA levels （greater than 0.2 ng ml-1） and the time of biochemical recurrence was taken to be the first time PSA became detectable. In the multivariate model, PSA/NCPV was an independent predictor of extracapsular extension and positive surgical margin （P〈O.05）, but PSA/tumor volume was not. Kaplan-Meier curves revealed that PSA/NCPV correlated with biochemical recurrence-free survival （P〈O.O01; log-rank test） but PSA/tumor volume did not （P=0.275; log-rank test）. PSA/NCPV was also a significant independent prognostic factor for biochemical recurrence-free survival on multivariate Cox proportional hazard analysis （P=0.004, relative risk=2.42）. Our findings suggest that PSA/NCPV is associated independently with extracapsular extension and surgical margin status and may be an independent prognostic variable of PSA recurrence after radical prostatectomy.

Impact of Fusobacterium nucleatum in the gastrointestinal tract on natural killer cells

Tai Chi for Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus:A Systematic Review

Objective： Tai chi has been recommended for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus. The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate evidence from controlled clinical trials testing the effectiveness of tai chi in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods： Systematic searches were conducted on 14 electronic databases without restrictions on either population characteristics or language of publication. The outcome measures considered for inclusion were changes in fasting blood glucose （FBG）, glycosylated haemoglobin A1c （HbA1c） and quality of life （QOL）. Results： Eight randomised clinical trials （RCTs） and two controlled clinical trials （CCTs） met all inclusion criteria. Three RCTs from 1 trial compared the effects of tai chi with sham exercise and failed to show effectiveness of tai chi on FBG, HbA1c, or QOL. The other 3 RCTs tested the effects of tai chi compared with other types of exercise on FBG. The meta-analysis failed to show an FBG-lowering effect of tai chi [n=118, weighted mean difference （WMD）： -0.14 mmol/L, 95% CI：-0.86 to 0.58,P=0.70]. Four studies （2 RCTs and 2 CCT） compared tai chi with no treatment or self-management programme and failed to report significant differences between the experimental and control groups except for QOL from 1 RCT and 1 CCT. Conclusion： The existing evidence does not suggest that tai chi is an effective therapy for type 2 diabetes. Currently, there are few high-quality trials on which to make definitive judgements.

Siderophores,being iron-chelators,have received much attention in environmental research,medicine,and biotechnology because of their high affinity and specificity to a wide range of *** study aimed to investigate siderophore production of culturable soil fungi from ***,Tawang,La Trinidad,Benguet and to determine their chemical *** production was detected and quantified using Chrome Azurol Sulphonate assay while the siderophore characterization was through FeCl_(3),Csáky’s and Arnow’s *** was found that 11 out of 20 pure cultures,which showed positive CAS assay results,produce *** primers were used in PCR amplification for the molecular identification of the top-four *** on BLASTn analyses of their sequences,the isolates were found to be most homologous to species of Talaromyces,Byssochlamys,Paecilomyces,and *** identified species were subjected to phylogenetic analysis using MEGA 7 to the show evolutionary history and relationship among the fungal species.

Treatment satisfaction after I year high-power potassiumtitanyl-phosphate photoselective vaporization of the prostate

To investigate the factors that influence treatment satisfaction after high-power potassium-titanyl-phosphate （KTP） laser vaporization of the prostate, we compared the characteristics between patients who were satisfied and those who were not satisfied. In all, 97 patients aged between 53-82 years （median age 67 years） underwent high-power KTP laser vaporization of the prostate for lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia. At 12 months postoperatively, 60 patients were satisfied with the treatment, whereas 37 were dissatisfied. Although there were no differences in International Prostate Symptom Score （IPSS） values at baseline, the satisfied group scored better in total IPSS at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively （P 〈 0.05）. At baseline, the maximum flow rate （Qmax） was lower in the dissatisfied group and remained low throughout the follow-up period, with the exception of 1 month postoperatively （P 〈 0.05）, compared with the satisfied group. There were no differences in other objective data between the two groups, including post-void residual and the number of voids based on the frequency-volume charts. In a multivariate model, a higher bladder contractility index was associated with a greater likelihood of treatment satisfaction 12 months after high-power KTP laser vaporization （odds ratio 1.024, 95% confidence interval 1.001-1.048, P 〈 0.05）. Patients who were not satisfied following the surgery had a smaller improvement in subjective symptoms and Qmax. In addition, our findings suggest that the relative risk of treatment dissatisfaction following high-power KTP laser vaporization was increased in patients with weak detrusor contractility.

Aim： To investigate whether the biological process of superparamagnetic iron oxide （SPIO）-labeled human mesenchymal stem cells （hMSCs） may be monitored non-invasively by using in vivo magnetic resonance （MR） imaging with conventional 1.5-T system examinations in corpus cavernosa of rats and rabbits. Methods： The labeling efficiency and viability of SP10-labeled hMSCs were examined with Prussian blue and Tripan blue, respectively. After SPIO-labeled hMSCs were transplanted to the corpus cavernosa of rats and rabbits, serial T2-weighted MR images were taken and histological examinations were carried out over a 4-week period. Results： hMSCs loaded with SPIO compared to unlabeled cells had a similar viability. For SPIO-labeled hMSCs more than lx 105 concentration in vitro, MR images showed a decrease in signal intensity. MR signal intensity at the areas of SPIO-labeled hMSCs in the rat and rabbit corpus cavernosa decreased and was confined locally. After injection of SPIO-labeled hMSCs into the corpus cavernosum, MR imaging demonstrated that hMSCs could be seen for at least 12 weeks after injection. The presence of iron was confirmed with Prussian blue staining in histological sections. Conclusion： SP10-labeled hMSCs in corpus cavernosa of rats and rabbits can be evaluated non-invasively by molecular MR imaging. Our findings suggest that MR imaging has the ability to test the long-term therapeutic potential of hMSCs in animals in the setting of erectile dysfunction.

Bamboo salt suppresses skin inflammation in mice with 2, 4-dinitrofluorobenzene-induced atopic dermatitis

Bamboo salt(BS) is a traditional Korean food, and has been reported to have anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-metastatic effects. However, the anti-atopic dermatitis(AD) activity of BS has not been described yet. In the present study, we examined the preventive effect of BS on AD. The effect of oral administration of BS was tested in a 2, 4-dinitrofluorobenzene(DNFB)-induced AD animal model, by histological analysis, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, caspase-1 assay, and Western blotting analysis. BS administration reduced the total clinical severity and scratching frequencies, compared with the AD group. In the serum of DNFB-induced AD mice, the levels of IgE, histamine, thymic stromal lymphopoietin(TSLP), interleukin(IL)-5, and IL-13 were significantly reduced by BS treatment. BS significantly reduced the protein and mRNA expression of TSLP, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α in the AD skin lesions. BS markedly reduced the infiltration of inflammatory cells. Furthermore, the activation of caspase-1 was reduced by BS in the AD skin lesions. Our results suggested that BS should be considered as a candidate treatment for allergic inflammatory diseases including AD.

Report of a Dicephalic Steppes Ratsnake (Elaphe dione) Collected in South Korea

In this report, we describe morphological characteristics of a dicephalic Steppes Ratsnake （Elaphe dione） collected from the wild in 2011 in South Korea. The specimen has two heads and two long necks. Unlike normal individuals, the dicephalic snake has divided ventral scales under the necks of the bifurcated columns. The snout- vent length （SVL） and overall total length of the individual are shorter than those of normal snakes of the same age. Nevertheless, the counts of nine different scale types that are often used for classification are all within the ranges of normal individuals. As far as we know, this is the first detailed morphological description of a dicephalic E. dione in the scientific literature.

Effect of pineapple peel extract on total phospholipids and lipid peroxidation in brain tissues of rats

Objective:To investigate the ability of the methanolic extract of pineapple peel to attenuate alcohol-induced changes in total phospholipids and lipid peroxidation in brain tissues. Methods:Oxidative stress was induced by oral administration of ethanol(20%w/v) at a dosage of 5 mL/kg bw in *** 28 days of treatment,the rats were fasted overnight and sacrificed by cervical *** tissues were assayed for total phospholipid(TP) content and malondialdehyde(MDA).Results:Administration of alcohol significantly caused a reduction in TP *** with pineapple peel extract significantly increased the TP content. Significant high levels of MDA was observed in alcohol-fed rats,treatment with pineapple peel extract significantly reduced the MDA ***:Results obtained from this study indicates that pineapple peel extract protects against alcohol-induced changes in total phospholipids and lipid peroxidation in brain tissues.
