Contralateral trapezius transfer to treat scapular winging: A case report and review of literature

BACKGROUND No dynamic technique, such as tendon transfer, has been described for scapular winging due to levator scapulae or rhomboid major and minor palsies resulting from an isolated dorsal scapular nerve injury. Thus, we evaluated how the contralateral trapezius compound osteomuscular flap transfer would work in stabilizing lateral scapular winging, and the case is reported here. A literature review was also conducted, and articles relevant to the case are *** SUMMARY A 37-year-old male patient who had sustained an isolated dorsal scapular nerve injury underwent reconstructive surgery using the contralateral trapezius compound osteomuscular flap transfer technique to treat scapular winging and the consequent pain, and to restore function from the shoulder impairment. As a result, the involved shoulder showed an improved Constant-Murley score, from19.5% to 81.88%.CONCLUSION Contralateral trapezius osteomuscular flap transfer succeeded in stabilizing scapular winging in this case, improving shoulder function and affording pain relief.

Aging of ancient raw materials usually finish with disintegration, which starts on surface of walls to progress toward the inside mass of a huge variety of mineral compounds. This is particularly harmful when antique buildings keep mural paintings, which suffers destruction before the wall itself. Same case appears on sculptures and monuments, whose surfaces are often attacked by living organisms which start a deterioration process previous to complete disintegration. The main factor to produce these unwanted effects is humidity, either rain for materials exposed to open air, or underground humidity going up by capillarity of minerals, in this case represented by porosity of associated salts forming the material. This paper describes a method to measure easily the relative porosity of diverse raw materials at laboratory level, by using a radioactive labeled solution, and also a procedure to reduce their porosity of those minerals. The efficiency of this procedure is measured in the same way, and so the results obtained at laboratory level have encouraged its use at real scale, where it has been quite successful for a number of materials in a limited span of five years.

The high penetration of distributed generation(DG)has set up a challenge for energy management and consequently for the monitoring and assessment of power quality(PQ).Besides,there are new types of disturbances owing to the uncontrolled connections of non-linear *** stochastic behaviour triggers the need for new holistic indicators which also deal with big data of PQ in terms of compression and scalability so as to extract the useful information regarding different network states and the prevailing PQ disturbances for future risk assessment and energy management *** and continuous monitoring would guarantee the report to claim for damages and to assess the risk of PQ *** this context,we propose a measurement method that postulates the use of two-dimensional(2D)diagrams based on higher-order statistics(HOSs)and a previous voltage quality index that assesses the voltage supply waveform in a continous monitoring *** suitable for both PQ and reliability applications,the results conclude that the inclusion of HOS measurements in the industrial metrological reports helps characterize the deviations of the voltage supply waveform,extracting the individual customers’pattern fingerprint,and compressing the data from both time and spatial *** method allows a continuous and robust performance needed in the SG ***,the method can be used by an average consumer as a probabilistic method to assess the risk of PQ deviations in site characterization.

A greenhouse study was conducted to investigate the persistence of methoxyfenozide in pepper （Capsicum annuum L.） foliage. An aqueous suspension of methoxyfenozide was sprayed on pepper plants at concentrations of 72 and 144 mg of active ingredient （a.i.）/L. Foliage was collected at different intervals of time （0, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 days） after the treatment, and the methoxyfenozide residue was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. The foliage was also used in bioas- says to determine the residual toxicity on and the consumption rate of the third-instar larvae of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua （Htibner）（Lepidoptera： Noctuidae）. The methoxyfenozide concentrations observed after 50 days had decreased to 19 and 69μg/g per sample, corresponding to a loss of 61% and 28% from the application concentrations of 72 and 144 mg a.i./L, respectively. When fitting a first-order kinetics degradation model, the half-life （DT50） of this compound was 76 days. Both application concentrations of methoxyfenozide caused a high mortality rate （〉97%） when the larvae were fed the pepper foliage collected at all of the time intervals. Lastly, at all of the time points, the consumption rate by the larvae was reduced to between 57% and 92% for both concentrations that were bioassayed. Our results indicate that, under the present greenhouse conditions, the degradation of methoxyfenozide was slower than that reported by other authors and that its residues were highly toxic to S. exigua larvae. The implications of these results for the management programs of this pest are discussed.

BACKGROUND Ampullary adenocarcinoma(AAC)is a rare neoplasm that accounts for only 0.2%of all gastrointestinal *** incidence rate is lower than 6 cases per million *** prognostic factors have been described for AAC and are associated with a wide range of survival ***,these studies have been exclusively conducted in patients originating from Asian,European,and North American *** To evaluate the histopathologic predictors of overall survival(OS)in South American patients with AAC treated with curative pancreaticoduodenectomy(PD).METHODS We analyzed retrospective data from 83 AAC patients who underwent curative(R0)PD at the National Cancer Institute of Peru between January 2010 and October 2020 to identify histopathologic predictors of *** Sixty-nine percent of patients had developed intestinal-type AAC(69%),23%had pancreatobiliary-type AAC,and 8%had other ***-one percent of patients were classified as Stage I,according to the AJCC 8 th *** occurred primarily in the liver(n=8),peritoneum(n=4),and lung(n=4).Statistical analyses indicated that T3 tumour stage[hazard ratio(HR)of 6.4,95%confidence interval(CI)of 2.5-16.3,P<0.001],lymph node metastasis(HR:4.5,95%CI:1.8-11.3,P=0.001),and pancreatobiliary type(HR:2.7,95%CI:1.2-6.2,P=0.025)were independent predictors of *** Extended tumour stage(T3),pancreatobiliary type,and positive lymph node metastasis represent independent predictors of a lower OS rate in South American AAC patients who underwent curative PD.

Haematuria was known as a benign hallmark of some glomerular diseases, but over the last decade, new evidences pointed its negative implications on kidneydisease progression. Cytotoxic effects of oxidative stress induced by hemoglobin, heme, or iron released from red blood cells may account for the tubular injury observed in human biopsy specimens. However, the precise mechanisms responsible for haematuria remain unclear. The presence of red blood cells （RBCs） with irregular contours and shape in the urine indicates RBCs egression from the glomerular capillary into the urinary space. Therefore glomerular haematuria may be a marker of glomerular filtration barrier dysfunction or damage. In this review we describe some key issues regarding epidemiology and pathogenesis of haematuric diseases as well as their renal morphological fndings.

AIM： To assess whether portacaval anastomosis （PCA） in rats affects the protein expression and/or activity of glutaminase in kidneys, intestines and in three brain areas of cortex, basal ganglia and cerebellum and to explain the neurological alterations found in hepatic encephalopathy （HE）. METHODS： Sixteen male Wistar rats weighing 250-350 g were grouped into sham-operation control （n=8） or portacaval shunt （n = 8）. Twenty-eight days after the procedure, the animals were sacrificed. The duodenum, kidney and brain were removed, homogenised and mitochondria were isolated. Ammonia was measured in brain and blood. Phosphate-activated glutaminase （PAG） activity was determined by measuring ammonia production following incubation for one hour at 37 ℃ with O-phthalaldehyde （OPA） and specific activity expressed in units per gram of protein （pkat/g of protein）. Protein expression was measured by immunoblotting. RESULTS： Duodenal and kidney PAG activities together with protein content were significantly higher in PCA group than in control or sham-operated rats （duodenum PAG activity was 976.95±268.87μkat/g of protein in PCA rats vs 429.19±126.92.μkat/g of protein in shamoperated rats; kidneys PAG activity was 1259.18±228.79 μkat/g protein in PCA rats vs 669.67±400.8 μkat/g of protein in controls, P〈0.05; duodenal protein content： 173% in PCA vs sham-operated rats; in kidneys the content of protein was 152% in PCA vs sham-operated rats）.
