Role of oxidative stress on growth responses of spring barley exposed to different environmental stressors

Objectives: To investigate the efficacy of epidermal noncultured cellular grafting in patients with vitiligo and the role of postinflammatory, spontaneous, or UV-induced pigmentation in obtaining repigmentation. Design: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Setting: Ambulatory patients in an institutional practice. Patients were followed up for 3 to 12 months. Patients: A total of 33 paired, symmetrically distributed leukodermic lesions, all resistant to therapy, were observed in 28 patients. Nineteen patients appeared to have a stable vitiligo (group 1), whereas there was doubt about the stability of the disease in 9 patients (group 2). Intervention: After laser ablation, a hyaluronic acid-enriched cellular graft was applied to 1 lesion while the paired lesion received placebo. Three weeks later all lesions were exposed to UV irradiation twice per week for approximately 2 months. Main Outcome Measures: Primarily, the percentage of repigmentationwas assessed after 3, 6, and 12months using a digital image analysis system. The repigmentation patternwas also evaluated after 1 and 3 months. Results: A strongly significant difference between cellular grafts and placebo was observed after 3, 6, and 12 months (P < .001, P=.002, and P=.002, respectively). In group 1, repigmentation of at least 70%of the treated area was achieved in 55%, 57%, and 77%of the actively treated lesions 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment, whereas in group 2 repigmentation of at least 70%of the treated area was not observed at any time point. The repigmentation pattern was diffuse in 94%of the responding patients. Conclusions: After a strict preoperative selection for disease stability, transplantation resulted in repigmentation of at least 70%of the treated area in most actively treated vitiligo lesions. Repigmentation was primarily caused by the transplanted melanocytes.

The Laughter of Ticklishness Is a Darwinian Feature Related to Empathy in Both Genders: Self-Esteem in Men and Sexism in Women

The theory of false alarm for laughter could explain the involuntary laugh when someone is tickled. To put this hypothesis to the test, we handed out a questionnaire (180 items) with two hundred university students. Our main results are: In women who like being tickled, we discover components related to pleasure, erotism, feeling of affection, arousal, uncontrollability, domination, sexism and Darwinian (golden ratio) and psychological traits (empathy, low schizotypy and external locus of control) that are not present in the laughter at a stumble. The relation of both types of laughter with sense of humor is also differential. In men who like being tickled, we discover components related to masturbation, sexual fantasies, erotism, arousal, domination, sexist humour and Darwinian (square chin, feeling of masculinity) and psychological traits (empathic stress, low schizotypy, external locus of control and overall self-esteem). The relationship between being tickled and self-esteem shows a double aspect in men: It is positive in men who like being tickled and negative in men who do not like being tickled. For women there is not a relationship between self-esteem and tickling. Our conclusion is that laughter of ticklishness is a Darwinian feature related to empathy.

ELECTROCHEMICAL STUDY ON THE LOCALIZED CORROSION OF TWO DIFFERENT TEMPER LY12 ALLOYS

The corrosion behavior of two different aged LY12 alloys in EXCO （234g/L NaCl, 50g/L KNO3 0.1M HNO3） and mil-H-600 （35g/L NaCl, 5g/L （NH4）2SO4） solutions were studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy （EIS） in conjunction with SEM technique respectively, and the pH variation of the above accelerated corrosion solution during materials corroding was also measured to characterize the corrosion processes. At the beginning of corrosion, EIS plots exhibited two capacitive arcs in the high frequency range （Cd） and mediate frequency range （ Cf） originating from the original corroded surface and the newly formed interface respectively, and a low frequency inductive loop due to the relaxation phenomenon of reaction intermediates. In the EXCO,solution, the EIS results showed that once the exfoliation corrosion occurred, the inductive loop disappeared. The results also showed that the exfoliation corrosion susceptibility of state T6 is much higher than that of state T3, but the intergranular corrosion susceptibility has a reverse order. Based on the relationship of EIS results with SEM and metalloscopy morphologies of the corroding substrates and physic-chemical meaning of EIS parameters, an index （Cf/Cd） has been proposed to characterize the extent of the localized corrosion, which variation tallies with the real corrosion extent correctly. Meanwhile, good agreement was found between the experimental results and the electrochemical model proposed and, good coherence between the electrochemical features and the distribution type of constituent particles of corroding material was observed.
