Soil salinity is a growing problem around the world with special relevance in farmlands. The ability to sense and respond to environmental stimuli is among the most fundamental processes that enable plants to survive. At the cellular level, the Salt Overly Sensitive （SOS） signaling pathway that comprises SOS3, SOS2, and SOS1 has been proposed to mediate cellular signaling under salt stress, to maintain ion homeostasis. Less well known is how cellularly heterog- enous organs couple the salt signals to homeostasis maintenance of different types of cells and to appropriate growth of the entire organ and plant. Recent evidence strongly indicates that different regulatory mechanisms are adopted by roots and shoots in response to salt stress. Several reports have stated that, in roots, the SOS proteins may have novel roles in addition to their functions in sodium homeostasis. SOS3 plays a critical role in plastic development of lateral roots through modulation of auxin gradients and maxima in roots under mild salt conditions. The SOS proteins also play a role in the dynamics of cytoskeleton under stress. These results imply a high complexity of the regulatory networks involved in plant response to salinity. This review focuses on the emerging complexity of the SOS signaling and SOS protein functions, and highlights recent understanding on how the SOS proteins contribute to different responses to salt stress besides ion homeostasis.

Dear Editor, Forward genetic screens are commonly used as unbiased tools to isolate genes responsible for a phenotype of interest. In Arabidopsis thaliana, especially T-DNA activation tagging pop- ulations are frequently employed. Durable Asphalt Pavements Are Self Healing

The traffic volume and the number of heavy vehicles are growing continuously. Considering the continuous traffic flow and the limited time available for road maintenance,it is very important to design a durable pavement system. Asphalt pavements with a healing capability are believed to be very useful since they can extend the pavement service life thanks to rest periods and hot summers. In order to design durable asphalt pavements,research in understanding and upgrading the self-healing capability of bituminous materials in time is of major importance. The self healing capability of bituminous mastic was evaluated in this research with a direct tension healing test. In the test program,different healing times,crack status and modifications were applied. The results indicate that elastic recovery and flow capacity are important factors for the self healing capability of bituminous materials at different crack phases as simulated with the direct tension test.

Background The optimal management of ipsilateral extracranial internal carotid artery(ICA)stenosis during endovascular treatment(EVT)is *** compared the outcomes of two different strategies:EVT with vs without carotid artery stenting(CAS).methods In this observational study,we included patients who had an acute ischaemic stroke undergoing EVT and a concomitant ipsilateral extracranial ICA stenosis of≥50%or occlusion of presumed atherosclerotic origin,from the Dutch multicenter Randomized Clinical Trial of Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke in the Netherlands(mR CLEAN)Registry(2014-2017).The primary endpoint was a good functional outcome at 90 days,defined as a modified Rankin Scale score≤*** endpoints were successful intracranial reperfusion,new clot in a different vascular territory,symptomatic intracranial haemorrhage,recurrent ischaemic stroke and any serious adverse *** Of the 433 included patients,169(39%)underwent EVT with *** 123/168(73%)patients,CAS was performed before intracranial *** 42/224(19%)patients who underwent EVT without CAS,a deferred carotid endarterectomy or CAS was *** with and without CAS were associated with similar proportions of good functional outcome(47%vs 42%,respectively;adjusted OR(aOR),0.90;95%CI,0.50 to 1.62).There were no major differences between the groups in any of the secondary endpoints,except for the increased odds of a new clot in a different vascular territory in the EVT with CAS group(aOR,2.96;95%CI,1.07 to 8.21).Conclusions Functional outcomes were comparable after EVT with and without *** during EVT might be a feasible option to treat the extracranial ICA stenosis but randomised studies are warranted to prove non-inferiority or superiority.

Unusual high-density and saline aqueous inclusions in ultrahigh pressure metamor- phic rocks from Sulu terrane in eastern China

Primary high-density fluid inclusions were identified in garnet from ultrahigh pressure eclogite in the southern part of the Sulu terrane. They occur isolatedly or in cluster together with relatively low-density two-phase inclu-sions. The eutectic temperature of the inclusions is as low as ≤ -52℃. A bubble was nucleated in a liquid inclusion dur-ing the specific stage of cyclic cooling-heating runs, and the liquid-gas homogenization temperature was measured to be ≤-12.5℃. The composition of the inclusions modeled by the system CaCl2-NaCl-H2O, yields the fluid density of 1.27g/cm3 that corresponds to a pressure of ca. 2.4 GPa at thetemperature of peak eclogite-facies metamorphism, close tothe ultrahigh pressure metamorphic conditions. During theexhumation of the eclogite the inclusions reacted with thehost mineral, forming hydrous silicate minerals that resulted in lowering of the fluid density and its transformation to multi-phase inclusions.

Effects of undigested protein-rich ingredients on polarised small intestinal organoid monolayers

Here, we describe the use of monolayers of intestinal epithelial cells derived from intestinal organoids and transcriptomics to investigate the direct effects of dietary protein sources on epithelial function. mechanically dissociated 3 D organoids of mouse duodenum were used to generate a polarized epithelium containing all cell types found in the tissue of origin. The organoid-derived cell monolayers were exposed to 4%(w/v) of ‘undigested(non-hydrolysed)-soluble' fraction of protein sources used as feed ingredients [soybean meal(SBm) and casein], or alternative protein sources(spray dried plasma protein, and yellow meal worm), or controls for 6 h prior to RNA isolation and transcriptomics. All protein sources altered expression of unique biological processes in the epithelial cells. Exposure of intestinal organoids to SBm downregulated expression of retinol and retinoid metabolic processes as well as cholesterol and lipid biosynthetic pathways, consistent with the reported hypotriglyceridaemic effect of soy protein in vivo. These findings support the use of intestinal organoids as models to evaluate complex interactions between dietary ingredients and the intestinal epithelium and highlights some unique host effects of alternative protein sources in animal feed and potentially human food.

Damage to plant communities imposed by insect herbivores generally decreases from low to high *** decrease is routinely attributed to declines in herbivore abundance and/or diversity,whereas latitudinal changes in per capita food consumption remain virtually ***,we tested the hypothesis that the lifetime food consumption by a herbivore individual decreases from low to high latitudes due to a temperature-driven decrease in metabolic *** 2016 to 2019,we explored latitudinal changes in multiple characteristics of linear(gallery)mines made by larvae of the pygmy moth,Stigmella lapponica,in leaves of downy birch,Betula *** mined leaves were larger than intact leaves at the southern end of our latitudinal gradient(at 60°N)but smaller than intact leaves at its northern end(at 69°N),suggesting that female oviposition preference changes with *** latitudinal changes were observed in larval size,mine length or area,and in per capita food consumption,but the larval feeding efficiency(quantified as the ratio between larval size and mine size)increased with ***,*** larvae consumed less foliar biomass at higher latitudes than at lower latitudes to reach the same *** on space-for-time substitution,we suggest that climate warming will increase metabolic expenses of insect herbivores with uncertain consequences for plant-herbivore interactions.

Comparison between lighting performance of a virtual natural lighting solutions prototype and a real window based on computer simulation

This article discusses the measurement and simulation of a first generation prototype of Virtual Natural Lighting Solutions （VNLS）, which are systems that can artificially provide natural lighting as well as a realistic outside view, with properties comparable to those of real windows and skylights. Examples of employing Radiance as a simulation tool to predict the lighting performance of such solutions are shown, for a particular case study of a VNLS prototype displaying variations of a simplified view of overcast, clear, and partly cloudy skies. measurement and simulation were conducted to evaluate the iUuminance distribution on workptane level. The key point of this study is to show that simulations can be used to compare an actual VNLS prototype with a hypothetical real window under the same sky scenes, which was physically not possible, since the test room was not located at the building＇s facade. It is found that the investigated prototype yields a less rapidly drop iUuminance distribution and a larger average illuminance than the corresponding real window, under the overcast （52 lx compared to 28 lx） and partly cloudy （102 lx compared to 80 lx） sky scenes. Under the clear sky scene, the real window yields a larger averase illuminance （97 lx） compared to the prototype （71 lx）, due to the influence of direct sunlight.
