Prediction of clinically actionable genetic alterations from colorectal cancer histopathology images using deep learning

BACKGROUND Identifying genetic mutations in cancer patients have been increasingly important because distinctive mutational patterns can be very informative to determine the optimal therapeutic strategy. Recent studies have shown that deep learning-based molecular cancer subtyping can be performed directly from the standard hematoxylin and eosin(H&E) sections in diverse tumors including colorectal cancers(CRCs). Since H&E-stained tissue slides are ubiquitously available, mutation prediction with the pathology images from cancers can be a time-and cost-effective complementary method for personalized *** To predict the frequently occurring actionable mutations from the H&E-stained CRC whole-slide images(WSIs) with deep learning-based *** A total of 629 CRC patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas(TCGA-COAD and TCGA-READ) and 142 CRC patients from Seoul St. Mary Hospital(SMH) were included. Based on the mutation frequency in TCGA and SMH datasets, we chose APC, KRAS, PIK3CA, SMAD4, and TP53 genes for the study. The classifiers were trained with 360 × 360 pixel patches of tissue images. The receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curves and area under the curves(AUCs) for all the classifiers were *** The AUCs for ROC curves ranged from 0.693 to 0.809 for the TCGA frozen WSIs and from 0.645 to 0.783 for the TCGA formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded *** prediction performance can be enhanced with the expansion of datasets. Delayed neurological deterioration following head trauma

We report a patient who presented with neurological deterioration 26 days after a motor vehicle accident. A 25-year-old man crashed a car onto farmland from a height of approximately 3 meters. Neurological deterioration including ataxia and visual disturbance became apparent 26 days after the accident. Brain magnetic resonance imaging did not reveal any abnormality, but brain single photon emission computed tomography showed mild hypoperfusion in the left frontotemporal lobe. An ophthalmic examination revealed no specific abnormality, but visual-evoked potentials revealed prolonged latencies in both eyes. We propose that this neurological deterioration might have resulted from traumatic axonal injury. As such, future studies should examine preventive strategies against delayed deterioration in patients with head trauma.

Quantitative Analysis of Graphene Sheet Content in Wood Char Powders during Catalytic Pyrolysis

The quantitative characterization of the graphene sheet content in carbon-containing materials is arguable and has not yet been developed. The authors report on a feasible method to characterize graphene sheet content quantitatively in pyrolized carbon materials using an X-ray diffraction （XRD） spectrometer. A direct carbonation at 300℃ followed by catalytic pyrolysis （heat-treatment temperature was set at 700-1400 ℃） under a vacuum condition was used for turning wood waste into pyrolized wood char powders. The graphene content in the samples was calculated through an analysis of full width at half maximum （FWHM） of the carbon （100） crystal plane at around 42°-43° in XRD. Results showed that the FWHM and the calculated graphene sheet content of pyrolized wood char powders depended on the heat-treatment temperature, and the FWHM of wood char powder with well-developed graphene sheets （100%） was determined to be 5.0. In addition, the trend to 100% graphene sheet-contained pyrolized carbon powder was obtained at a heattreatment temperature of 2700 ℃. The resistivity of the wood char powder with 100% graphene sheets was predicted to be 0.01 Ω cm, close to our experimental data of 0.012 and 0.006 Ω cm for commercial graphite and graphene products, respectively.

High Temperature Phase Transitions of Graphene Oxide Paper from Graphite Oxide Solution

Graphene oxide paper （GOP） can be prepared through simplified filtration of a graphite oxide solution. It possesses similar properties to graphene. In this study, the graphite oxide solution was synthesized from commercial graphite by means of Hummer＇s method. It corresponds to the dried GOP that was prepared by deposition on a cellulose filter. It is found that the mesophase of the dried graphene oxide papers obtained from the graphite was thermotropic hexagonal columnar liquid crystal. Its higher temperature transitions were found at 80 ℃, 150 ℃ and 170 ℃-180 ℃. Therefore, it could be used for thermal storage and conductive materials in the future.

Transcallosal motor pathway from affected motor cortex to affected hand in a patient with corona radiata infarct A diffusion tensor tractography and transcranial magnetic stimulation study

The mechanisms of motor recovery through the transcallosal pathway remain poorly understood. The present study reports on a hemiplegic patient with corona radiata infarct; it attempts to confirm motor recovery through the transcallosal motor pathway, from the affected motor cortex to the affected hand, using diffusion tensor tractography and transcranial magnetic stimulation. A 54-year-old, male patient and eight age-matched, normal subjects were enrolled in the study. The patient＇s right hand was initially completely paralyzed, but slowly recovered over 6 months. In the control subjects and the unaffected hemisphere （right） of the patient, the corticospinal tracts originated from the motor cortex and descended along the known corticospinal tract pathway. However, the corticospinal tract of the affected hemisphere was disrupted at the upper pons. Following transcranial stimulation of the affected （left） motor cortex, motor evoked potential from the affected （right） abductor pollicis brevis muscle exhibited longer latency than opposite motor evoked potential. Results from the present study suggest that motor function of the affected （right） hand recovered via the transcallosal motor pathway from the affected （left） motor cortex in this patient.

Illumination of parameter contributions on uneven break： phenomenon in underground stoping mines

One of the most serious conundrum facing the stope production in underground metalliferous mining is uneven break （UB： unplanned dilution and ore-loss）. Although the UB has a huge economic fallout to the entire mining process, it is practically unavoidable due to the complex causing mechanism. In this study, the contribution of ten major UB causative parameters ha,; been scrutinised based on a published UB predicting artificial neuron network （ANN） model to put UB under the engineering management. Two typical ANN sensitivity analysis methods, i.e., connection weight algorithm （CWA） and profile method （PM） have been applied. As a result of CWA and PM applications, adjusted Qrate （AQ） revealed as the most influential parameter to UB with contribution of 22,40% in CWA and 20,48% in PM respectively. The findings of this study can be used as an important reference in stope design, production, and reconciliation stages on underground stoping mine.

Al,Ca,and Zn are representative commercial alloying elements for Mg *** investigate the effects of these elements on the deformation and recrystallization behaviors of Mg alloys,we develop interatomic potentials for the Al-Ca,Al-Zn,Mg-Al-Ca and Mg-Al-Zn systems based on the second nearest-neighbor modified embedded-atom method *** developed potentials describe structural,elastic,and thermodynamic properties of compounds and solutions of associated alloy systems in reasonable agreement with experimental data and higher-level *** applicability of these potentials to the present investigation is confirmed by calculating the generalized stacking fault energy for various slip systems and the segregation energy on twin boundaries of the Mg-Al-Ca and Mg-Al-Zn alloys,accompanied with the thermal expansion coefficient and crystal structure maintenance of stable compounds in those alloys.

The low-temperature physical vapor deposition process of atomically thin two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide(2D TMD) has been gaining attention owing to the cost-effective production of diverse electrochemical catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) applications. We, herein, propose a simple route toward the cost-effective physical vapor deposition process of 2D WSe2 layered nanofilms as HER electrochemical catalysts using RF magnetron sputtering at room temperature(<27℃). By controlling the variable sputtering parameters, such as RF power and deposition time, the loading amount and electrochemical surface area(ECSA) of WSe2 films deposited on carbon paper can be carefully determined. The surface of the sputtered WSe2 films are partially oxidized, which may cause spherical-shaped particles. Regardless of the loading amount of WSe2, Tafel slopes of WSe2 electrodes in the HER test are narrowly distributed to be ~120–138 mV dec-1, which indicates the excellent reproducibility of intrinsic catalytic activity. By considering the trade-off between the loading amount and ECSA, the best HER performance is clearly observed in the 200 W-15 min sample with an overpotential of 220 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Such a simple sputtering method at low temperature can be easily expanded to other 2D TMD electrochemical catalysts, promising potentially practical electrocatalysts.

Onsite-effects of dual-hemisphere versus conventional single-hemisphere transcranial direct current stimulation A functional MRI study

We performed functional MRI examinations in six right-handed healthy *** functional MRI scanning,transcranial direct current stimulation was delivered with the anode over the right primary sensorimotor cortex and the cathode over the left primary sensorimotor cortex using dual-hemispheric transcranial direct current *** was compared to a cathode over the left supraorbital area using conventional single-hemispheric transcranial direct current stimulation. Voxel counts and blood oxygenation level-dependent signal intensities in the right primary sensorimotor cortex regions were estimated and compared between the two transcranial direct current stimulation *** results showed that dual-hemispheric transcranial direct current stimulation induced greater cortical activities than single-hemispheric transcranial direct current *** findings suggest that dual-hemispheric transcranial direct current stimulation may provide more effective cortical stimulation than single-hemispheric transcranial direct current stimulation.

Motor outcomes of patients with a complete middle cerebral artery territory infarct

Detailed knowledge of motor outcomes enables to establish proper goals and rehabilitation strate-gies for stroke patients. Several previous studies have reported functional or motor outcomes in patients with a middle cerebral artery territory infarct. However, little is known about motor outcome in patients with a complete middle cerebral artery territory infarct. In this study, we investigated the motor outcomes in 23 patients with a complete middle cerebral artery territory infarct. All of these patients received comprehensive rehabilitative management, including movement therapy and neuromuscular electrical stimulation of the affected finger extensors and ankle dorsiflexors, for more than 3 months. Motor outcomes were measured at 6 months after stroke onset using the Medical Research Council, Motricity Index, the modified Brunnstrom Classification, and Functional Ambula-tion Category scores. The motor function of the lower extremities was found to be better than that of the upper extremities. After receiving rehabilitation treatments for 3–6 months, about 70% of these patients were able to walk independently （Functional Ambulation Category scores 3）, but no pa-tient achieved functional hand recovery.
