Sodium picosulphate or polyethylene glycol before elective colonoscopy in outpatients?A systematic review and meta-analysis

AIM To determine the best option for bowel preparation [sodium picosulphate or polyethylene glycol(PEG)] for elective colonoscopy in adult *** A systematic review of the literature following the PRISMA guidelines was performed using Medline, Scopus, EMBASE, Central, Cinahl and Lilacs. No restrictions were placed for country, year of publication or language. The last search in the literature was performed on November 20th, 2017. Only randomized clinical trials with full texts published were included. The subjects included were adult outpatients who underwent bowel cleansing for elective colonoscopy. The included studies compared sodium picosulphate with magnesium citrate(SPMC)and PEG for bowel preparation. Exclusion criteria were the inclusion of inpatients or groups with specific conditions, failure to mention patient status(outpatient or inpatient) or dietary restrictions, and permission to have unrestricted diet on the day prior to the exam. Primary outcomes were bowel cleaning success and/or tolerability of colon preparation. Secondary outcomes were adverse events, polyp and adenoma detection rates. Data on intention-totreat were extracted by two independent authors and risk of bias assessed through the jadad scale. Funnel plots, Egger's test, Higgins' test(I2) and sensitivity analyses were used to assess reporting bias and heterogeneity. The meta-analysis was performed by computing risk difference(RD) using MantelHaenszel(MH) method with fixed-effects(FE) and random-effects(RE) *** Manager 5(RevMan 5) version 6.1(The Cochrane Collaboration) was the software chosen to perform the ***662 records were identified but only 16 trials with 6200 subjects were included for the meta-analysis. Columnar joints in the Patino Formation sandstones, Eastern Paraguay： a dynamic interaction between dyke intrusion, quartz dissolution and cooling-induced fractures

The Patiho Formation sandstones, which crop out in Aregud neighborhood in Eastern Paraguay and show columnar joints near the contact zone with a nephelinite dyke, have as their main characteristics the high pro- portion of syntaxial quartz overgrowth and a porosity originated from different processes, initially by dissolu- tion and later by partial filling and fracturing. Features like the presence of floating grains in the syntaxial cement, the transitional interpenetrative contact between the silica-rich cement and grains as well as the intense fracture porosity are strong indications that the cement has been formed by dissolution and reprecipita- tion of quartz from the framework under the effect of thermal expansion followed by rapid contraction. The increase of the silica-rich cement towards the dyke in association with the orthogonal disposition of the columns relative to dyke walls are indicative that the igneous body may represent the main heat source for the interstitial aqueous solutions previously existing in the sediments. At macroscopic scale, the increasing of inter- nal tensions in the sandstones is responsible for the nucleation of polygons, leading to the individualization of prisms, which are interconnected by a system of joints, formed firstly on isotherm surfaces of low tem- perature and later on successive adjacent planes towards the dyke heat source.

Pramipexole, a dopamine D3/D2 receptor-preferring agonist, attenuates reserpine-induced fibromyalgia-like model in mice

Fibromyalgia(FM) is a complex pathology described as persistent hyperalgesia including somatic and mood dysfunctions, depression and anxiety. Although the etiology of FM is still unknown, a significant decrease in biogenic amines is a common characteristic in its pathogenesis. Here, our main objective was to investigate the role of dopamine D3/D2 receptor during the reserpine-induced pain in mice. Our results showed that pramipexole(PPX) – a dopaminergic D3/D2 receptor agonist – inhibited mechanical allodynia and thermal sensitivity induced by reserpine. Relevantly, PPX treatment decreased immobility time and increased the number of grooming in the forced swimming test and splash test, respectively. Animals that received PPX remained longer in the open arms than the reserpine group using elevated plusmaze apparatus. The repeated PPX administration, given daily for 4 days, significantly blocked the mechanical and thermal allodynia during FM model, similarly to pregabalin, although it failed to affect the reserpine-induced thermal nociception. Reserpine administration induced significant downregulation of dopamine concentration in the central nervous system, and repeated treatment with PPX restored dopamine levels in the frontal cortex and spinal cord tissues. Moreover, PPX treatment inhibited oxidants production such as DCFH(2′,7′-dichlorodihydrofluorescein) and nitrite, also decreased oxidative damage(carbonyl), and upregulated the activity of superoxide dismutase in the spinal cord. Together, our findings demonstrated the ability of dopamine D3/D2 receptor-preferring agonist in reducing pain and mood dysfunction allied to FM in mice. All experimental protocols were approved by the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina(UFSC) Ethics Committee(approval No. 2572210218) on May 10, 2018.

Ethanol Production by Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Elephant Grass

The aim of this work is to evaluate the efficiency of ethanol production by fermentation of a hydrolysate obtained by the enzymatic hydrolysis of purple elephant grass （Pennisetum purpureum Schum.） using a blend of cellulases. Three hundred grams of 20-mesh granulated purple elephant grass was subjected to hot water pretreatment at 100 ℃ for a period of 25 min in a batch autoclave reactor. The pulp obtained from the pretreatment process was washed with water at 60 ℃ and submitted to enzymatic hydrolysis using a combination of exoglucanases, endoglucanases and beta-glucosidases or β-glucosidases from Novozymes. The pH of the system was kept constant at 4.8 by adjusting the levels of acetic acid or sodium acetate in the buffer solution. Enzymatic hydrolysis occurred at 50 ℃ upon agitation at 200 rpm on a shaker for 72 hours. The hydrolysate obtained after agitation was fermented using dried Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast （manufactured by Dr. Oetker） at 30 ℃ for 10 hours. The liquids obtained after fermentation were analysed using HPLC to determine the quantity of ethanol produced. After 4 hours of fermentation, the maximum quantity of ethanol was 1.8 g/L. The stoichiometric yield of ethanol was approximately 95%. However, the step ofpretreatment was deemed unsatisfactory due to the loss of glucose during the pretreatment process.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is one of the most prevalent autosomal dominant inherited disorders. Mutations have been found in at least 3 genes: the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR), apolipoprotein B (APOB), and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9). We report on an Azorean family with FH due to a novel mutation in the LDLR gene across three generations. The index-case was first seen at our endocrinology consultation at 12 years old, because of delayed growth and development. Laboratorial investigations revealed a complete failure of the anterior hypophysis due to a congenital malformation of the sella turcica. A total cholesterol of 313 mg/dL (90 - 190 mg/dL) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) of 262 mg/dL ( G) causing a premature termination of transcription (stop codon) was identified.

The purpose of this work is to present state of the art mass balances closing strategies in ore treatment plants to report metal accounting in a reliable manner. The current methodology is based on usage of an expert system which seizes and filters the plant data, analyses situations of equipment stops and mostly instruments failures. It is still possible to internally create a strategy to check the data of an instrument failure. The system is coupled to software with a Lagrangian model of mass balance closure that receives the pre-treated data. Thus, the data goes through filtering and reconciling processes to generate a reliable mass balance of the ore treatment plant. This made it possible to obtain a system that is able to tell the real productivity of an ore plant through reliable mass balances. Residence times on equipment are critical to the balance, thus, they require good logic to eliminate errors due to the characteristics of non-steady state. Among the next challenges is the inclusion of a soft sensor as a replacement of an instrument required for mass balance closure.
