Stabilisation of estuarine sediments with an alkali-activated cement for deep soil mixing applications

In this work,an alternative alkali-activated cement(AAC)made of ladle slag precursor mixed with sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate has been developed to enhance the bearing capacity of estuarine soils in coastal conditions via deep soil mixing(DSM).The AAC was optimized to use a low reactivity precursor(ladle slag)and to deal with a contaminated high-water content natural sediment cured under *** material performance was analysed by comparison to a mixture made with Portland cement and cured in the same *** and unconfined compressive strength tests as well as seismic waves measurements after 3-,7-,14-and 28-d curing were performed to obtain a relationship between elastic stiffness and strength with curing time for both ***,the AAC mix demonstrated superior strength results,exhibiting almost double flexural and compressive strengths after 28 d compared to the Portland cement *** AAC mix also showed a higher rate of stiffness increase than the Portland cement mix,which has a higher initial stiffness at young ages but lower stiffness *** analysis confirmed that the proposed AAC could effectively immobilise any contaminants from soil or *** effect of curing under stress was analysed in triaxial compression tests and found to be insignificant,indicating that laboratory data obtained without stress curing can represent the material's behaviour in a DSM column,which will cure under the weight of the column.

Rainfall simulators(RS)have been used,above all,to evaluate hydrological processes related to soil water infiltration,surface runoff and soil *** allow repeatability of rain application with different precipitation intensities in field and/or laboratory conditions and should produce events with physical characteristics similar to natural *** this manuscript,we carried out a bibliometric and scientometric analysis of studies with simulated rainfall in Brazil to assess the temporal evolution of publications,the main topics addressed and the degree of technological development of the *** searched for the terms“rainfall simulator”OR“simulated rainfall”AND“Brazil”in the Scopus,Web of Science,SciElO and Google Scholar *** found 143 articles published in the last 37 years(1985-2022).Our findings indicate that the main research areas covered in papers are soil erosion(57.34%),soil water infiltration(24.47%),nutrient losses(9.8%)and RS development and calibration/assessment(8.39%).In recent years,the number of published papers in international high-impact factor journals has *** of the papers(49.65%)refer to studies carried out by institutions located in the south and southeast regions of ***,there is a large gap of studies on simulated rainfall in other regions of Brazil,where important biomes such as the Cerrado,Amazon,Caatinga,and their transitions are *** study informs research priorities on soil erosion under simulated rainfall and provides a bibliographic database that can assist in more detailed future analyses.

Indonesia is one of the largest coconut-producing countries in the *** utilization of coconut shell waste into briquettes will increase the selling value and become a great export ***,the effect of adhesives on the quality of coconut shell charcoal briquettes made using screw extruder machine has not been widely *** study aims to determine the effect of adhesive type on the quality of coconut shell charcoal *** process of fabricating briquettes in this study included crushing,mixing,blending,pressing,and *** the mixing process,3 types of adhesives were used,namely tapioca flour(Briquette_1),cassava flour(Briquette_2),and modified cassava flour(Briquette_3)with a concentration of 5%of the weight of coconut shell charcoal *** quality of the resulting briquettes and commercial briquettes will be evaluated by moisture content,ash content,volatile matter,fixed carbon,calorific value,density,compressive,and drop test *** results of this research showed that the type of adhesive had a significant effect on the quality of the briquettes *** Briquette_1 had better quality than commercial briquettes(Briquette_4)and other briquette *** test results showed that Briquette_1 produced briquettes with better compressive strength and friability than the other specimens,at 6.95 N/mm^(2) and 4.44%,*** moisture content,ash content,fixed carbon,and calorific value of Briquette_1 have met the requirements set by the Indonesian National Standard(SNI)number ***,the volatile matter content and density of Briquette_1 are by the standards of japan and the United States America(USA).

Simultaneously targeting extracellular vesicle trafficking and TGF-β receptor kinase activity blocks signaling hyperactivation and metastasis

Metastasis is the leading cause of cancer-related *** growth factor beta(TGF-β)signaling drives metastasis and is strongly enhanced during cancer ***,the use of on-target TGF-βsignaling inhibitors in the treatment of cancer patients remains unsuccessful,highlighting a gap in the understanding of TGF-βbiology that limits the establishment of efficient anti-metastatic ***,we show that TGF-βsignaling hyperactivation in breast cancer cells is required for metastasis and relies on increased small extracellular vesicle(sEV)*** sEV’s unique role,TGF-βsignaling levels induced by sEVs exceed the activity of matching concentrations of soluble ligand TGF-β.Further,genetic disruption of sEV secretion in highlymetastatic breast cancer cells impairs cancer cell aggressiveness by reducing TGF-βsignaling to nearly-normal ***,TGF-βsignaling activity in non-invasive breast cancer cells is inherently low,but can be amplified by sEVs,enabling invasion and metastasis of poorly-metastatic breast cancer *** the translational potential of inhibiting sEV trafficking in advanced breast cancers,treatment with dimethyl amiloride(DMA)decreases sEV secretion,TGF-βsignaling activity,and breast cancer progression in *** both the sEV trafficking and TGF-βsignaling by combining DMA and SB431542 at suboptimal doses potentiated this effect,normalizing the TGF-βsignaling in primary tumors to potently reduce circulating tumor cells,metastasis,and tumor ***,this study establishes sEVs as critical elements in TGF-βbiology,demonstrating the feasibility of inhibiting sEV trafficking as a new therapeutic approach to impair metastasis by normalizing TGF-βsignaling levels in breast cancer cells.

Resection of Intracranial Giant Cavernous Malformation: Case Report and literature Review

Cerebral cavernous malformations are a rare and congenital vascular malformation that can present as a challenge in neurosurgical management. The term “giant cerebral cavernous malformations” still does not have a clear definition in the literature, with a wide variety of results. It is known, however, that there is an association between the size of the cavernoma and postoperative sequelae, especially in those with a size greater than 3 cm in its largest diameter. We present a case report of resection of a giant brain cavernoma measuring approximately 8 cm in its largest diameter, emphasizing on clinical presentation, diagnoses and postoperative evolution. Additionally, we performed a comprehensive review of the existing literature on the subject, addressing the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic methods, treatment options, and prognosis associated with this condition.
