This study aims to assess and compare levels of particulate matter(PM10 and PM2.5)in urban and industrial areas in Malaysia during haze episodes,which typically occur in the south west monsoon *** high concentrations of atmospheric particles are mainly due to pollution from neighbouring *** PM concentrations were analysed for urban and industrial areas including Alor Setar,Tasek,Shah Alam,Klang,Bandaraya Melaka,Larkin,Balok Baru,and Kuala Terengganu in 2018 and *** analysis employed spatiotemporal to examine how PM levels were *** data summary revealed that PM levels in all study areas were right-skewed,indicating the occurrence of high particulate *** peaks in PM concentrations during haze events were consistently observed between June and October,encompassing the south west monsoon and inter-monsoon *** study on acute respiratory illnesses primarily focused on *** revealed that Klang had the highest mean number of inpatient cases for acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma(AEBA)and acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(AECOPD)with values of 260.500 and 185.170,***,for outpatient cases of AEBA and AECOPD,Klang had the highest average values of 41.67 and 14.00,*** Alam and Sungai Buloh did not show a significant increase in cases during periods of biomass *** statistical analysis concluded that higher concentrations of PM were associated with increased hospital admissions,particularly from June to September,as shown in the bar *** episodes were associated with more healthcare utilization due to haze-related respiratory illnesses,seen in higher inpatient and outpatient visits(p<0.05).However,seasonal variability had minimal impact on healthcare *** findings offer a comprehensive assessment of PM levels during historic haze episodes,providing valuable insights for authorities to develop policies and guidelines fo

Photon absorption parameters such as mass attenuation coefficients(μ_m),molar extinction coefficients(ε),total molecular(σ_(t,m)),atomic(σ_(t,a))and electronic(σ_(t,el))cross sections,half-value layers(X_(1/2)),tenth-value layers(X_(1/10)),mean free paths(λ),effective atomic numbers(Z_(eff)),and effective electron densities(N_(el))were estimated for defatted soy flour(DSF),soy protein concentrate(SPC),and soy protein isolate(SPI)-based Rhizophora *** composites substituted with 10 wt%sodium hydroxide(NaOH)and 0,5,10,and 15 wt%itaconic acid polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin(IA-PAE)*** composition was assessed using ultrahigh-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry(UHR-FESEM-EDX).The interaction parameters were evaluated for K_(α1)photons at16.59,17.46,21.21,and 25.26 keV,employing a low-energy germanium(LEGe)detector system and an~(241)Amγ-ray source.X-ray diffraction characterization revealed an amorphous phase in the developed particleboard *** DSF15',SPC15',and SPI15'exhibited the highest values ofμ_m,ε,σ_(t,m),Zeff,and N_(el)among all of the studied particleboard samples,within the range of measured photon *** addition,all of the modified samples exhibited lower X_(1/2),X_(1/10),λ,σ_(t,a),andσ_(t,el)than the unmodified samples,with DSF-,SPC-,and SPI/NaOH/Rhizophora spp./IA-PAE(15 wt%),indicating insignificant *** current results of the particleboard samples'analysis can be useful for medical radiation applications and shielding research.

Dose-dependent effects of NMDA on retinal and optic nerve morphology in rats

AIM: To investigate dose-dependent effects of N-methylD-aspartate(NMDA) on retinal and optic nerve morphology in ***: Sprague Dawley rats, 180-250 g in weight were divided into four groups. Groups 1, 2, 3 and 4 were intravitreally administered with vehicle and NMDA at the doses 80, 160 and 320 nmol respectively. Seven days after injection, rats were euthanized, and their eyes were taken for optic nerve toluidine blue and retinal hematoxylin and eosin stainings. The TUNEL assay was done for detecting apoptotic ***: All groups treated with NMDA showed significantly reduced ganglion cell layer(GCL) thickness within inner retina, as compared to control group. Group NMDA 160 nmol showed a significantly greater GCL thickness than the group NMDA 320 nmol. Administration of NMDA also resulted in a dose-dependent decrease in the number of nuclei both per 100 μm GCL length and per 100 μm2 of GCL. Intravitreal NMDA injection caused dosedependent damage to the optic nerve. The degeneration of nerve fibres with increased clearing of cytoplasm was observed more prominently as the NMDA dose increased. In accordance with the results of retinal morphometry analysis and optic nerve grading, TUNEL staining demonstrated NMDA-induced excitotoxic retinal injury in a dose-dependent ***: Our results demonstrate dose-dependent effects of NMDA on retinal and optic nerve morphology in rats that may be attributed to differences in the severity of excitotoxicity and oxidative stress. Our results also suggest that care should be taken while making dose selections experimentally so that the choice might best uphold study objectives.

The phenolic and antioxidant constituents in Acacia nilotica fruits have become an important source of medicinal and thera-peutic benefit with powerful biological *** study investigated the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of powdered Acacia fruits with seeds and without *** phenolic content and antioxidant capacities in them were deter-mined using Folin-Ciocalteu and DPPH free radical-scavenging *** total phenolic and antioxidants of *** with seeds were spectrophotometrically determined to be 47.61 and 6.18%greater than when the seeds were removed from the dried fruits,*** LC-MS/QTOF analysis shows the presence of 282 and 214 phenolic compounds in the methanol extracts of *** with seeds and without seeds,*** present study,therefore,revealed that dried *** fruits with seeds have higher total phenolic content,antioxidant capacity,and bioactive constituents,which indi-cated that they have more medicinal value than fruits without seeds.

Study of Hydrophobic Nature of Fullerene-Based Poly (Methyl Hydro Siloxane) and Polyacrylonitrile Interpenetrating Polymer Network

In this study, the effect of combining different molecular domains on single platform has been reported that revealed a proper packing and interpenetration of fullerene spheres with the monomeric species. The fabricated IPN system exhibits hydrophobic behavior in nature. An interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) of fullerene-based poly (methyl hydro siloxane) (PMHS) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was prepared. The synthesized polymer network was characterized using infrared (IR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetric analysis (DSC), and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) technique. The IPN was analyzed by IR spectroscopy, which depicts presence of fullerene at 500 cm−1 and 1632 cm−1, presence of PHMS at 1050 cm−1, 1250 cm−1, 2225 cm−1, and 3000 cm−1 and presence of PAN at 3077 cm−1, 1299 cm−1, 1408 cm−1 and 2083 cm−1. Shifting in band positions indicated the interpenetration of the reacting species. DSC endotherm showed crystalline peak (Tc) at 117˚C, which indicated the crystalline nature of the synthesized IPN. The absence of Tg peak and clear observable Tc peak revealed crystalline behavior of polymeric network. The microstructure of the polymer network was observed by SEM technique, which revealed transparent and dual-phase morphology of the IPN surface. The fluorescent emission spectra of polymeric network were recorded on a spectrofluorometer which revealed fluorescent excitation and emission spectra of the IPN. The Emission spectra generated by radiative decay of excitations exhibit a maximal peak at 450 nm, suggesting that the synthesized IPN nanosheets were typically high-intensity blue light emitting materials. The FTIR investigations revealed multiple non-covalent interactions achieved by polymerization with physical anchoring on the polymeric network surfaces. The water quality parameter total suspended solids in the coastal area of Penang Island, Malaysia have been studied using Landsat TM data. The aim of this study was to test the feasibility of using satellite data for mapping and monitoring water quality parameter total suspended solids (TSS) by using remote sensing and digital processing techniques. The model used in this study is based on the reflectance model which is a function of the inherent optical properties (IOP) of water and this in turn can be related to the concentration of its constituents. The digital numbers for each band corresponding to the sea-truth locations were extracted and then converted into radiance and reflectance values. The reflectance values were used for calibration of the water quality algorithm. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm was investigated based on the observations of correlation coefficient (R) and root-mean-square deviations (RMS) using the sea truth data. The proposed algorithm is considered superior to other tested algorithms based on the values of the correlation coefficient, R=0.93 and root-mean square error, RMS=9 mg/l. The calibrated TSS algorithm was used to generate the water quality maps. The water quality image was geometrically corrected and image smoothing was performed on the map to remove random noise. The generated map was color-coded for visual interpretation.
