High-fidelity multimode fibre-based endoscopy for deep brain in vivo imaging

Progress in neuroscience relies on new techniques for investigating the complex dynamics of neuronal *** ongoing challenge is to achieve minimally invasive and high-resolution observations of neuronal activity in vivo inside deep brain *** introduced methods for holographic control of light propagation in complex media enable the use of a hair-thin multimode optical fibre as an ultranarrow imaging *** to endoscopes based on graded-index lenses or fibre bundles,this new approach offers a footprint reduction exceeding an order of magnitude,combined with a significant enhancement in *** designed a compact and high-speed system for fluorescent imaging at the tip of a fibre,achieving a resolution of 1.18±0.04μm across a 50-μm field of view,yielding 7-kilopixel images at a rate of 3.5 frames/***,we demonstrate in vivo observations of cell bodies and processes of inhibitory neurons within deep layers of the visual cortex and hippocampus of anaesthetised *** study paves the way for modern microscopy to be applied deep inside tissues of living animal models while exerting a minimal impact on their structural and functional properties.

In-vivo microendoscopy in animal models became a groundbreaking technique in neuroscience that rapidly expands our understanding of the *** hair-thin endoscopes based on multimode fibres are now opening up the prospect of ultra-minimally invasive neuroimaging of deeply located brain *** these advancements with methods of functional imaging and optogenetics,as well as extending its applicability to awake and motile animals constitute the most pressing challenges for this *** we demonstrate a novel fibre design capable of both,high-resolution imaging in immobilised animals and bending-resilient optical addressing of neurons in motile *** optimised refractive index profile and the probe structure allowed reaching a spatial resolution of 2μm across a 230μm field of view for the initial layout of the ***,the fibre exhibits negligible cross-talk between individual inner-cores during fibre *** work provides a technological solution for imaging-assisted spatially selective photo-activation and activity monitoring in awake and freely moving animal models.

Syncope is a rather frequent condition,responsible for1.0%–1.5%of emergency department (ED) visits.[1]Even if the development of clinical guidelines has improved the ED management of syncope,[2]the hospitalization rate is still very high (up to 50%),especially compared with the incidence of short-term adverse events,which is11%globally,but decreases to less than 4%when events already diagnosed in the ED are excluded,[1]meaning that most patients will not benefit from admission.

Individual prey choices of octopuses： Are they generalist or specialist？

Prey choice is often evaluated at the species or population level. Here, we analyzed the diet of octopuses of different populations with the aim to assess the importance of individual feeding habits as a factor affecting prey choice. two methods were used, an assessment of the extent to which an individual octopus made choices of species representative of those population (PSiand IS) and 25% cutoff values for number of choices and percentage intake of individual on their prey. In one population ofOctopus cf vulgarisin Bermuda individuals were generalist by IS=0.77, but most chose many prey of the same species, and were specialists on it by >75% intake. Another population had a wider prey selection, still generalist with PSi=0.66, but two individuals specialized by choices. In Bonaire, there was a wide range of prey species chosen, and the population was specialists by IS= 0.42. Individual choices revealed seven specialists and four generalists. A population ofOctopus cyaneain Hawaii all had similar choices of crustaceans, so the population was generalist by IS with 0.74. But by individual choices, three were considered a specialist. A population ofEnteroctopus dofleinifrom Puget Sound had a wide range of preferences, in which seven were also specialists, IS=0.53. By individual choices, thirteen were also specialists. Given the octopus specialty of learning during foraging, we hypothesize that both localized prey availability and individual personality differences could influence the exploration for prey and this translates into different prey choices across individuals and populations showed in this study.

the assessment of detrital zircon age records is a key method in basin analysis,but it is prone to several biases that may compromise accurate sedimentary provenance *** to ultrahigh temperature(Ht-UHt)metamorphism(especially if t>850℃)is herein presented as a natural cause of bias in provenance studies based on U-Pb detrital zircon ages,since zircon from rocks submitted to these extreme and often prolonged conditions frequently yield protracted,apparently concordant,geochronological *** age spreading can result from disturbance of the primary U-Pb zircon system,likewise from(re)crystallization processes during multiple and/or prolonged metamorphic *** this contribution,available geochronological data on Archean,Neoproterozoic and Palaeozoic Ht-UHt metamorphic rocks,acquired by different techniques(SIMS and LA-ICP-MS)and showing distinct compositions,are reassessed to demonstrate Ht-UHt metamorphism may result in modes and age distributions of unclear geological *** a consequence,it may induce misinterpretations on UPb detrital zircon provenance analyses,particularly in sedimentary rocks metamorphosed under such extreme temperature *** evaluate the presence of Ht-UHt metamorphism-related bias in the detrital zircon record,we suggest a workflow for data acquisition and interpretation,combining a multi-proxy approach with:(i)in situ U-Pb dating coupled with Hf analyses to retrieve the isotopic composition of the sources,and(ii)the integration of a petrochronological investigation to typify fingerprints of the Ht-UHt metamorphic *** proposed workflow is validated in the investigation of one theoretical and one natural example allowing a better characterization of the sedimentary sources,maximum depositional ages,and the tectonic setting of the *** workflow allows to the appraisal of biases imposed by Ht-UHt metamorphism and resulting disturbances in the U-Pb detrital zircon record,particularly for sedimentary

the southern São Francisco Paleocontinent(SFP)comprises Archean nuclei and Paleoproterozoic complexes encompassing magmatic arcs juxtaposed during a Rhyacian to Orosirian orogenic *** Juiz de Fora Complex(JFC)represents an imbricated thrust system that comprises orthogranulites with a wide compositional range formed in an intra-oceanic setting during the Siderian to the Orosirian and later accreted to the southeastern margin of the *** we report new petrological,geochemical,whole-rock Nd and Sr data,as well as zircon U–Pb ages from felsic and mafic orthogranulites from the *** new data is combined with a regional compilation that enables an evaluation of the interaction between magmatism and orogenetic episodes in the context of the consolidation of São Francisco Paleocontinent during the Rhyacian–*** collisional Island Arc tholeiites(IAt),tonalites-tron dhjemites-Granodiorites(ttGs)and sanukitoid magmatism occurred from 2200 Ma to 2085 *** was followed by post-collisional magmatism,which is represented by hybrid granitoids coeval with the emplacement of E-MORB basic *** signatures for the Rhyacian to Orosirian evolution are highlighted by the dominance of negativeεNd(t)associated with Meso-to Neoarchean Nd tDMmodel ages as well as inherited zircon grains from the hybrid *** JFC is extensively highlighted in the literature as a primitive intra-oceanic arc,but here we propose the reworking or recycling of ancient crustal segments within the mature arc stage of the JFC,suggesting a Mesoarchean crustal source involved in the JFC evolution.

Analysis of a Plasmonic Based Optical Fiber Optrode With Phase Interrogation

Optical fiber optrodes are attractive sensing devices due to their ability to perform point measurement in remote locations. Mostly, they are oriented to biochemical sensing, quite often supported by fluorescent and spectroscopic techniques, but with the refractometric approach considered as well when the objective is of high measurement performance, particularly when the focus is on enhancing the measurand resolution. In this work, we address this subject, proposing and analyzing the characteristics of a fiber optic optrode relying on plasmonic interaction. A linearly tapered optical fiber tip is covered by a double overlay： the inner one - a silver thin film and over it - a dielectric layer, with this combination allowing to achieve, at a specific wavelength range, surface plasmonic resonance （SPR） interaction sensitive typically, the interrogation of the SPR sensing to the refractive index of the surrounding medium. structures is performed, considering spectroscopic techniques, but in principle, a far better performance can be obtained, considering the reading of the phase of the light at a specific wavelength located within the spectral plasmonic resonance. this is the approach which is studied here in the context of the proposed optical fiber optrode configuration. the analysis performed shows the combination of a silver inner layer with a dielectric titanium oxide layer with tuned thicknesses enables sensitive phase reading and allows the operation of the fiber optic optrode sensor in the third telecommunication wavelength window.

the effective osteointegration of orthopedic implants is a key factor for the success of orthopedic ***,local metabolic imbalance around implants under osteoporosis condition could jeopardize the fixation *** by the bone structure and the composition around implants under osteoporosis condition,alendronate(A)was grafted onto methacryloyl hyaluronic acid(H)by activating the carboxyl group of methacryloyl hyaluronic acid to be bonded to inorganic calcium phosphate on trabecular bone,which is then integrated with aminated bioactive glass(AB)modified by oxidized dextran(O)for further adhesion to organic collagen on the trabecular *** hybrid hydrogel could be solidified on cancellous bone in situ under UV irradiation and exhibits dual adhesion to organic collagen and inorganic apatite,promoting osteointegration of orthopedic implants,resulting in firm stabilization of the implants in cancellous bone *** vitro,the hydrogel was evidenced to promote osteogenic differentiation of embryonic mouse osteoblast precursor cells(MC3t3-E1)as well as inhibit the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand(RANKL)-induced osteoclast differentiation of macrophages,leading to the upregulation of osteogenic-related gene and protein *** a rat osteoporosis model,the bone-implant contact(BIC)of the hybrid hydrogel group increased by 2.77,which is directly linked to improved mechanical stability of the orthopedic ***,this organic-inorganic,dual-adhesive hydrogel could be a promising candidate for enhancing the stability of orthopedic implants under osteoporotic conditions.
