Discrete particle simulations of bubble-to-emulsion phase mass transfer in single-bubble fluidized beds

A classical Euler-Lagrangian model for gas-solid flows was extended with gas component mass conser- vation equations and used to obtain fundamental insights into bubble-to-emulsion phase mass transfer in bubbling gas-solid fluidized beds. Simulations of injected single rising bubbles under incipient fiuidiza- tion conditions were carried out, using Geldart-A and -B particles. Phenomena observed in the simulations and those of various theoretical models used to derive phenomenological models were compared to chal- lenge the assumptions underlying the phenomenological models. The bubble-to-emulsion phase mass transfer coefficients calculated for the simulations using Geldart-B particles were in a good agreement with predictions made using the Davidson and Harrison （1963） model. The bubble-to-emulsion phase mass transfer coefficients for Geldart-A particles were, however, much smaller than the predictions obtained from theoretical models （e.g. Chiba and Kobayashi （1970））. The newly developed model allows a detailed analysis of various hydrodynamic aspects and their effects on the mass transfer characteristics in and around rising bubbles in fluidized beds.

A simple method for the magnetic modification of various types of powdered agglomerate forming dia- magnetic materials was developed. Magnetic iron oxide particles were prepared from ferrous sulfate by microwave assisted synthesis. A suspension of the magnetic particles in water soluble organic solvent （methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropyl alcohol, or acetone） was mixed with the material to be modified and then completely dried at elevated temperature. The magnetically modified materials were found to be stable in water suspension at least for 2 months.

An easy, reliable, and inexpensive method, called ＇Express＇ method, was described to determine the residual gas capacity of deep mines using results from an air and gas balance. Air and gas balances are common elements of mine management and must be performed periodically. Using the process described here to obtain balance results, it is straightforward to obtain the residual gas capacity, which is an important parameter for decision-making in current mine operations. After a mine is closed, the residual gas capacity becomes a dominant factor used to select methods to protect against gas emissions from the closed underground area or perhaps to provide information for the use of gas reserves. The proposed ＇Express＇ method is a much simpler method to obtain the residual gas capacity than other procedures used for this purpose to date.

Adaptive higher-order finite element methods(hp-FEM)are well known for their potential of exceptionally fast(exponential)***,most hp-FEM codes remain in an academic setting due to an extreme algorithmic complexity of hp-adaptivity *** paper aims at simplifying hpadaptivity for H(curl)-conforming approximations by presenting a novel technique of arbitrary-level hanging *** technique is described and it is demonstrated numerically that it makes adaptive hp-FEM more efficient compared to hp-FEM on regular meshes and meshes with one-level hanging nodes.

Aim： To evaluate androgen receptor （AR） expression in clinically localized prostate cancer （PCa）. Methods： Specimens were studied from 232 patients who underwent radical prostatectomy for clinically localized prostatic adenocarcinoma without neoadjuvant hormonal therapy or chemotherapy at our institution between November 2001 and June 2005. Immunohistochemical study was performed using an anti-human AR monoclonal antibody AR441. The mean AR density in the hot spots of different histological areas within the same sections were compared and the correlation of malignant epithelial AR density with clinicopathological parameters such as Gleason score, tumor, nodes and metastases （TNM） stage and pre-treatment prostate-specific antigen （PSA） value was assessed. Results： AR immunoreactivity was almost exclusively nuclear and was observed in tumor cells, non-neoplastic glandular epithelial cells and a proportion of peritumoral and interglandular stromal cells. Mean percentage of AR-positive epithelial cells was significantly higher in cancer tissues than that in normal prostate tissues （mean e SD, 90.0% ± 9.3% vs. 85.3% ±9.7%, P 〈 0.001）. The histological score yielded similar results. The percentage ofAR immunoreactive prostatic cancer nuclei and histological score were not correlated with existing parameters such as Gleason score, tumor, nodes and metastases stage and pre-treatment PSA value in this surgically treated cohort. Conclusion： The results of the present study suggest that there may be limited clinical use for determining AR expression （if evaluated in hot spots） in men with localized PCa.

Dear editor,Airbags are an example of passive preventive measures reducing the risk of severe injury or death from a motor vehicle accident. However, airbags have also been described as a source of injuries related to airbag deployment. Typical airbag-related injuries are eye injuries, cervical spine injuries, rib fractures, cardiac injuries, extremity injuries, and thoracic aortic rupture(TAR).[1-3] Approximately one-third of patients with TAR who survive till hospital admission die before surgical treatment.[4] We present a patient with TAR after a lowspeed motor vehicle accident with rapidly deteriorating vital signs and subsequent death on the scene.

Small bowel adenocarcinomas are remarkable for their rarity, difficult diagnosis and poor prognosis. Here we report an unusual case of a 33-year-old patient in whom infiltrative adenocarcinoma of the small bowel was diagnosed after a 10-year history of Crohn＇s disease. In most previously reported cases, detection of Crohn＇s disease was subsequent tothat of carcinoma of the small bowel or the patients involved had an even longer history of the disease. Our literature review suggests that the risk of small bowel adenocarcinoma is higher in patients with Crohn＇s disease than in the overall population. We present details on epidemiology as well as clinical and diagnostic aspects of this rare disease entity.

Background:To evaluate the predictability of refraction following immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery(ISBCS)performed under general ***:This is a retrospective review of all ISBCS performed at Kantonsspital Winterthur,Switzerland,between April 2000 and September *** case notes of 250 patients were *** having full refraction reported(110 patients/220 eyes)were included.210(95%)eyes had a straight forward phacoemulsification with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation,seven eyes had a planned extracapsular cataract extraction(ECCE);three eyes had an intracapsular cataract ***:Both eyes of 110 patients(64 women,46 men)with a mean age of 79.0 years,standard deviation(SD)±11.4(range 26 to 97 years)were *** preoperative best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)was 0.5 LogMAR in the first eye,the interquartile range(IQR)was[0.4,1.2];0.7 LogMAR in the second eye with IQR[0.4,1.8].At one month,the median BCVA was 0.2 LogMAR,IQR[0.1,0.3]in the first eye,median BCVA was 0.1 LogMAR and IQR[0.0,0.5]in the second *** were 3 eyes(3%)that lost 3 lines or more in BCVA at one month(control ***-operatively).In all three cases,poor visual acuity had been recorded pre-operatively(>1 LogMAR).Achieved refraction was within±1.0 D of the target in 83%of *** were only 5%(n=6)of cases where if delayed sequential bilateral extraction had been performed could potentially intraocular lens(IOL)choice have been adjusted,in four of these cases,target refraction was within±1.0 D in the second ***:ISBCS performed under general anaesthesia achieves target refraction in 83%of eyes after consideration of complications,ocular co-morbidities and systemic *** the majority of cases where IOL power calculation could be considered,the achieved refraction of the second surgical eye was within±1.0 D of intended *** undermines the utility of IOL power adjustments in the second surgical
