Glucocorticoids play a key role in.mediatin. stress respon.es in.vertebrates. Corticosteron. （CORT） is the main.glucocorticoid produced in.amphibian., birds, an. reptiles, an. regulates several metabolic fun.tion.. The most common.methods for quan.ifyin. CORT are competitive bin.in. immun.assays： radioimmun.assay （RIA） an. en.yme immun.assay （EIA）. RIA has been.broadly used sin.e the 1980＇s but it requires radioactivity. Commercial EIA kits permit quan.ifyin. hormon. levels without radioactivity although the requiremen. for a larger sample volume may be a stron. limitation.for measuremen.s in.olvin. larval amphibian.. Here we used Xen.pus laevis tadpoles to compare the performan.e of three common.y used procedures for determin.tion.of CORT： RIA on.a chloroform extract of whole-body homogen.te, EIA on.plasma, an. EIA on.supematan. of whole-body homogen.te. We treated tadpoles with exogen.us CORT at 0, 25, 50, an. 100 n.. RIA could distin.uish between.0 an. 25 n., an. EIA on.plasma between.0 an. 50 n., whereas whole-body homogen.te EIA on.y detected sign.fican. differen.es between.0 an. 100 riM. Each procedure presen.s advan.ages an. disadvan.ages regardin. sen.itivity, the use of radioactivity, sample size, han.lin. time, an. econ.mic cost. RIA is preferred when.studyin. small-bodied an.mals from which blood samples can.ot be obtain.d. When.CORT level differen.es are in.ermediate an. blood samplin. is possible, EIA on.plasma is a good n.n.radioactive altern.tive. EIA on.whole-body homogen.tes may be useful to assess qualitative chan.es in.CORT levels when.con.iderable differen.es are expected. We report the results of magn.tic, thermodyn.mic, tran.port an. magn.tocaloric effect (MCE) studies of n.wly syn.hesized Gd_(10)Co_(20)Si_(70) alloy. These measuremen.s con.irm an.an.iferromagn.tic tran.ition.at T_n.9 K. Both MCE an. magn.toresistan.e (MR) show quadratic depen.en.e on.the applied magn.tic field, in.icatin. the presen.e of spin.fluctuation. in.the alloy. The maximum values of the magn.tic en.ropy chan.e determin.d from the isothermal magn.tization.data for magn.tic field chan.e of 7 an.9 T are foun. to be 10.5 an. 15.6 J/kg·K, respectively. As a con.equen.e of the spin.fluctuation. effect, the MCE peaks are pulled towards high temperature side as asymmetrically broaden.d peak. The MR attain. a large positive value of 73%at 2 K in.8 T. The large MR an. reversible MCE make this alloy an.attractive multifun.tion.l magn.tic material.

COVID-19 has presen.ed itself with an.extreme impact on.the resources of its epi-cen.res. In.Ugan.a, there is un.ertain.y about what will happen.especially in.the main.urban.hub, the Greater Kampala Metropolitan.Area (GKMA). Con.equen.ly, public health profession.ls have scrambled in.o resource-driven.strategies an. plan.in. to tame the spread. This paper, therefore, deploys spatial modellin. to con.ribute to an.un.erstan.in. of the spatial variation.of COVID-19 vuln.rability in.the GKMA usin. the socio-econ.mic characteristics of the region. Based on.expert opin.on.on.the prevailin. n.vel Coron.virus, spatially driven.in.icators were gen.rated to assess vuln.rability. Through an.on.in. survey an. auxiliary datasets, these in.icators were tran.formed, classified, an. weighted based on.the BBC vuln.rability framework. These were spatially modelled to assess the vuln.rability in.ices. The resultan. con.in.ous in.ices were aggregated, explicitly zon.d, classified, an. ran.ed based on.parishes. The resultan. spatial n.ture of vuln.rability to COVID-19 in.the GKMA sprawls out of major urban.areas, diffuses in.o the peri-urban. an. thin. in.o the sparsely populated areas. The high levels of vuln.rability (24.5% parishes) are con.en.rated in.the major town. where there are man. shoppin. malls, tran.action.l offices, an. tran.port hubs. n.arly half the total parishes in.the GKMA (47.3%) were moderately vuln.rable, these con.tituted main.y the parishes on.the outskirts of the major town. while 28.2% had a low vuln.rability. The spatial approach presen.ed in.this paper con.ributes to providin. a rapid assessmen. of the socio-econ.mic vuln.rability based on.admin.strative decision.un.ts-parishes. This essen.ially equips the public health domain.with the right diagn.sis to subject the highly exposed an. vuln.rable commun.ties to regulatory policy, in.rease resilien.e in.en.ives in.low adaptive areas an. optimally deploy resources to avoid the eman.ipation.of high susceptibility
