Elevated brain temperature under severe heat exposure impairs cortical motor activity and executive function

Background:Excessive heat exposure can lead to hyperthermia in humans,which impairs physical performance and disrupts cognitive *** heat is a known physiological stressor,it is unclear how severe heat stress affects brain physiology and ***:Eleven healthy participants were subjected to heat stress from prolonged exercise or warm water immersion until their rectal temperatures(T_(re))attained 39.5℃,inducing exertional or passive hyperthermia,*** a separate trial,blended ice was ingested before and during exercise as a cooling *** were compared to a control condition with seated rest(normothermic).Brain temperature(T_(br)),cerebral perfusion,and task-based brain activity were assessed using magnetic resonance imaging ***:T_(br)in motor cortex was found to be tightly regulated at rest(37.3℃±0.4℃(mean±SD))despite fluctuations in T_(re).With the development of hyperthermia,T_(br)increases and dovetails with the rising T_(re).Bilateral motor cortical activity was suppressed during high-intensity plantarflexion tasks,implying a reduced central motor drive in hyperthermic participants(T_(re)=38.5℃±0.1℃).Global gray matter perfusion and regional perfusion in sensorimotor cortex were reduced with passive *** function was poorer under a passive hyperthermic state,and this could relate to compromised visual processing as indicated by the reduced activation of left lateral-occipital ***,ingestion of blended ice before and during exercise alleviated the rise in both T_(re)and T_(bc)and mitigated heat-related neural ***:Severe heat exposure elevates T_(br),disrupts motor cortical activity and executive function,and this can lead to impairment of physical and cognitive performance.

Are trends in SeaWiFS chlorophyll time-series unusual relative to historic variability

For selected locations in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, we compared surface ocean chlorophyll time series extracted from SeaWiFS imagery from 1997-2004 with the results of an ocean coupled circulation and biogeochemical model covering the period 1958-2004. During the 1997-2004 time period, linear trends in model and satellite time series were significantly correlated at most of the 44 sites we studied. Eleven sites were selected for further study, and we used the longer time series of the model to assess whether trends observed during the SeaWiFS period at these 11 sites were unusual in relation to those observed over the longer historical period covered by the model. The results show that the trends observed during the SeaWiFS period were not unusual and fell well within the range in magnitude of linear trends observed in other 8-year periods of model output. This result implies that the SeaWiFS satellite ocean color time series is not yet sufficiently long, on its own, to directly observe any long term changes in phytoplankton chlorophyll that may be occurring in the surface waters of the open ocean as a result of increased ocean stratification linked to global climate changed.

Peripheral and mesenteric serum levels of cEA and cytokeratins,staging and histopathological variables in colorectal adenocarcinoma

AIM： To evaluate the differences that exist bet- ween peripheral and mesenteric serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen （cEA） and cytokeratins in patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma. METHODS： One hundred and thirty-eight patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma who underwent surgery at Hospital Sao Paulo （Discipline of Surgical Gastroenterology of UNIFESP-EPM） between December 1993 and March 2000 were retrospectively analyzed. Differences between cEA and cytokeratin （TPA-M） levels in peripheral blood （P） and in mesenteric blood （M） were studied. Associations were investigated between peripheral and mesenteric levels and the staging and histopathological variables （degree of cell differentiation, macroscopic appearance, tumor dimensions and presence of lymphatic and venous invasion）. RESULTS： Differences were observed in the numerical values of the marker levels： cEA （M）（39.10 mg/1 ± 121.19 mg/L） vs cEA （P）（38.5 mg/L ± 122.55 mg/L）, P 〈 0.05; TPA-M （M）（325.06 U/L ±527.29 U/L） vs TPA-M （P）（279.48 U/L ±455.81 U/L）, P 〈 0.01. The mesenteric cEA levels were higher in more advanced tumors （P 〈 0.01）, in vegetating lesions （34.44 mg/L ± 93.07 mg/L）（P 〈 0.01） and with venous invasion （48.41 mg/L ± 129.86 mg/L）（P 〈 0.05）. Peripheral cEA was higher with more advanced staging （P 〈 0.01）and in lesions with venous invasion （53.23 mg/L ± 258.57 mg/L）（P 〈 0.05）. The patients demonstrated increased mesenteric and peripheral TPA-M levels with more advanced tumors （P 〈 0.01 and P 〈 0.01） and in non-ulcerated lesions [530.45 U/L =1= 997.46 U/L （P 〈 0.05） and 457.95 U/L ± 811.36 U/L （P 〈 0.01）]. cONcLUSION： The mesenteric levels of the tumor markers cEA and cytokeratins were higher than the peripheral levels in these colorectal adenocarcinoma patients, Higher levels of these biologic tumor markers are associated with an advanced state of cancerous dissemination

Response of Rice to Insect Elicitors and the Role of OsJAR1 in Wound and Herbivory-Induced JA-lle Accumulation

Plants produce jasmonic acid （JA） and its amino acid conjugate, jasmonoyI-L-isoleucine （JA-Ile） as major defense signals in response to wounding and herbivory. In rice （Oryza sativa）, JA and JA-Ile rapidly increased after mechanical damage, and this increase was further amplified when the wounds were treated with oral secretions from generalist herbivore larvae, lawn armyworms （Spodoptera mauritia）, revealing for the first time active perception mechanisms of herbivore-associated elicitor（s） in rice. In the rice genome, two OsJAR genes can conjugate JA and lie and form JA-Ile in vitro; however, their function in herbivory- induced accumulation of JA-Ile has not been investigated. By functional characterization of TOS17 retrotransposon-tagged Osjarl plants and their response to simulated herbivory, we show that OsJAR1 is essential for JA-Ile production in herbivore-attacked, field-grown plants. In addition, OsJAR1 was required for normal seed development in rice under field conditions. Our results suggest that OsJAR1 possesses at least two major functions in rice defense and development that cannot be complemented by the additional OsJAR2 gene function, although this gene previously showed overlapping enzyme activity in vitro.

Dry powder platform for pulmonary drug delivery

The phenomenon of particle interaction involved in pulmonary drug delivery belongs to a wide variety of disciplines of particle technology, in particular, fluidization. This paper reviews the basic concepts of pulmonary drug delivery with references to fluidization research, in particular, studies on Geldart group c powders. Dry powder inhaler device-formulation combination has been shown to be an effective method for delivering drugs to the lung for treatment of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cystic fibrosis. Even with advanced designs, however, delivery efficiency is still poor mainly due to powder dispersion problems which cause poor lung deposition and high dose variability. Drug particles used in current inhalers must be 1–5 μm in diameter for effective deposition in small-diameter airways and alveoli. These powders are very cohesive, have poor flowability, and are difficult to disperse into aerosol due to cohesion arising from van der Waals attraction. These problems are well known in fluidization research, much of which is highly relevant to pulmonary drug delivery.

Does bilioenteric anastomosis impair results of liver resection in primary intrahepatic lithiasis?

AIM:To evaluate the long-term results of liver resection for the treatment of primary intrahepatic *** factors,especially the impact of bilioenteric anastomosis on recurrence of symptoms were ***:Forty one patients with intrahepatic stones and parenchyma fibrosis/atrophy and/or biliary stenosis were submitted to liver *** was associated with a Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy in all patients with bilateral stones and in those with unilateral disease and dilation of the extrahepatic biliary duct(>2 cm).Late results and risk factors for recurrence of symptoms or stones were ***:There was no operative *** a mean follow-up of 50.3 mo,good late results were observed in 82.9% of patients;all patients submitted to liver resection alone and 58.8% of those submitted to liver resection and hepaticojejunostomy were free of symptoms(P=0.0006).Patients with unilateral and bilateral disease showed good late results in 94.1% and 28.6%,respectively(PcONcLUSION:Recurrence of symptoms in patients with hepaticojejunostomy showed that this may not be the ideal *** studies are needed to establish the best treatment for patients with bilateral stones or unilateral disease and a dilated extrahepatic duct.

Liquid superlubricity of lubricants containing hydroxyl groups and their aqueous solution under rolling/sliding conditions

Farinose fiavonoids are associated with high freezing tolerance in fairy primrose (Primula malacoides) plants

The deposition of surface （farinose） flavonoids on aerial parts of some Primula species is a well-documented but poorly understood phenomenon. Here, we show that flavonoid deposition on the leaves and winter buds may contribute strongly to preventing freezing damage in these plants. The ice nucleation temperature of fairy primrose （Primula malacoides） leaves covered with natural flavone was approximately 6~c lower compared to those that had their flavone artificially removed. Additionally, farinose flavonoids on the leaves reduced subse- quent electrolyte leakage （EL） from the cells exposed to freezing temperatures. Interestingly, exogenous application of flavone at 4 mg/g fresh weight to P. malacoides leaves, which had the original flavone mechanically removed, restored freezing tolerance, and diminished EL from the cells to pretreatment values. Our results suggest that farinose flavonoids may function as mediators of freezing tolerance in P. malacoides, and exogenous application of flavone could be used to reduce freezing damage during sudden but predictable frost events in other plant species.
