Extraction of Fat and Fatty Acid Composition from Slaughterhouse Waste by Evaluating Conventional Analytical Methods

To attain maximum recovery of useful compounds from slaughterhouse waste (Suet, Tongue, Pancreas) of selected ruminant (cow, goat, lamb, and bull), the fat extraction efficiency of popular methods was compared along with fatty acid (FAs) composition. Four selected methods including Soxhlet (SOX), acid hydrolysis, Bligh & dyer (B&D), and Folch (FOL) were assessed. After methylation, extracted lipids were analyzed by Gas chromatography for FA composition. Data indicated that all selected methods were significantly (p < 0.05) different from each other, particularly higher differences were noticed for low lipid-containing products (Tongue, Pancreas) as well as their respective FA Composition. Based on Analysis of Variance and Principal component analysis, the effective method for lipid and FA Composition analysis was the FOL method. The Soxhlet method was only effective for samples with high-fat content i.e., suet, while the B&D method gave comparatively low lipid content in analyzed samples. Hence based on the results, excellent fat and fatty acid extraction was achieved with the FOL method.

Effects of different planting systems on yield of potato crop in Kaghan Valley: A mountainous region of Pakistan

Conversion of potato from conventional methods to wide bed planting systems may increase water and nitrogen use efficiency in commercial potato production system by reducing the amount of irrigation water and water applied nitrogen fertilizer bypassing the potato root zone. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L) cv. Desiree was tested against different planting system for yield and yield components at Kaghan, a high mountainous Himalayan region ofPakistan. The experiment was carried out at Himalayan Agricultural Research Station (HARS), Kaghan during the summer season of 2005. The results showed that maximum tuber growth (88.7%), number of stems per plant (3.5), plant expansion (45.5 cm), average number of tubers per plant (10.1) and yield per hectare (12.4 t/ha) were significantly different and higher when potatoes were planted on wide bed and covered with soil from one side. Tallest plants (53.4 cm) were observed when potatoes were sown on the ridges. Maximum number of green potatoes (12.5) and injured potatoes (5.3%) were observed when the tubers were planted following local farmers’ method. Keeping in view the soil type, land slopping, we recommend sowing potatoes on relatively plain wide beds and covering it with soil from one side, for potato cultivation in the area.

背景:心脏衰老是心脏疾病的主要危险因素之一,而细胞衰老是心脏衰老的主要机制,在衰老相关心脏疾病中起重要作用。作者前期工作发现自噬相关基因Uvrag缺失促进小鼠心脏细胞衰老,Rubicon是Uvrag的抑制性互作蛋白,其对小鼠心脏细胞衰老的作用尚不明确。目的:探讨Rubicon基因对心脏细胞衰老的影响。方法:使用15月龄野生型小鼠、Rubicon基因缺失小鼠、Uvrag基因缺失小鼠作为观察对象,其中Uvrag基因缺失小鼠作为阳性对照。采用荧光定量PCR检测小鼠心脏组织衰老相关分泌表型相关因子mRNA表达变化,苏木精-伊红染色、天狼猩红染色、衰老相关β-半乳糖苷酶染色进行心肌组织学观察,蛋白免疫印迹检测小鼠心脏组织p53和p16蛋白表达量。实验方案经上海交通大学动物实验伦理委员会批准。结果与结论:①苏木精-伊红染色和天狼猩红染色结果显示,Rubicon基因缺失改善了衰老过程中心肌细胞重塑及心脏纤维化;②衰老相关β-半乳糖苷酶染色发现,Rubicon基因缺失小鼠心脏衰老细胞较野生型对照组显著减少(P<0.05);③荧光定量PCR结果表明,Rubicon基因缺失小鼠心脏白细胞介素1β、白细胞介素6、转化生长因子β和Ⅲ型胶原α1链、基质金属蛋白酶组织抑制因子1 mRNA表达量较野生型对照组显著下调(P<0.05);④免疫印迹结果显示,Rubicon基因缺失导致心脏组织衰老调控关键基因p53表达较野生型对照组显著降低(P<0.05);⑤提示Rubicon基因缺失可显著抑制小鼠心脏细胞衰老并延缓心脏衰老,Rubicon是潜在的抑制心脏细胞衰老、抗心脏衰老及衰老相关心脏疾病的靶分子。

This study was conducted to investigate the factors affecting the adoption of organic farming in Peshawar-Pakistan. A total of 100 respondents were randomly selected from the four different cultivated areas of Peshawar, namely Palosi, Regi, Ternab and Pushtakhara. Binary logistic re-gression was used in this study to categorize the organic farming into adoption and non-adoption. The purpose of this model was to check the event probability for a categorical response variable with two outcomes. The results of the binary logistic show that factors affecting adoption of organic farming have a significant effect on the farmer productivity. Moreover, cost, productivity, profitability, compatibility and efficiency have a positive and significant effect. Thus, it is obvious that adopting organic farming not only to increase the farmer income but also to protect environmental pollution by avoiding the toxic chemical and fertilizer. Finally, we suggest that government agencies, extension and research institution should play a vital role to strengthen the awareness and advantages of organic farming.

Species composition and abundance of dinoflagellates from the coastal waters of Pakistan

Aplasia Cutis Congenita (ACC) is a rare condition characterized by absence of skin layers, usually on the scalp, but can also affect the foot. ACC can occur as an isolated condition or in the presence of the other congenital anomalies. Here we describe a case of a 1-day-old baby boy with an isolated ACC of the left foot, with no family or siblings positive disease history. The patient was managed by both conservatively and surgically until the defect has formed scar tissue 5 months later.
