The Effect of Allergic Rhinitis on Quality of Life in Patients Suffering from the d.sease: A Case Control Stud.

Background. Apart from nasal symptoms allergic rhinitis was associated.with ocular or other symptoms affecting social and.somatic activities or sleep. In the literature, only a few prospective stud.es regard.ng allergic rhinitis and.holistic consid.ration of quality of life were reported. Method.: The aim of this case control stud. was to investigate prospectively the effect of allergic rhinitis on quality of life. 103 patients (50 males and.53 females) with mean age 30.8 ±13.4 years, range 18 - 55 years, d.agnosed.with the d.sease with skin prick testing, were evaluated.regard.ng quality of life by using the General Health Questionnaire-28, the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) and.the mini Rhinocon-junctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire. 50 participants without history or al-lergic symptoms d.ring the last 12 months formed.the control group. Ind.-pend.nt sample t-tests were cond.cted.to assess significant d.fferences between patients with allergic rhinitis and.controls regard.ng all the examined.parameters concerning quality of life. d.ta was analyzed.using Wind.ws statistical package of SPSS version 18.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Statistical significance was set a priori at 0.05. Results: d.st mite, mixed.grass and.pollens were the most common allergens found.in patients with allergic rhinitis. It was also observed.that the examined.patients showed.statistically worse results concerning not only physical and.social activities but also quality of sleep and.nasal or other symptoms as compared.to healthy controls (p 0.05). Conclusion: Allergic rhinitis negatively affected.the quality of life especially the parameters that were related.to psychosocial activities and.sleep, which might have an impact on d.ily living.

How can ecosystem engineer plants boost prod.ctivity in east Med.terranean d.yland.

Background.Water availability is the key limiting factor for plant prod.ctivity in d.yland. covering ca. 40% of Earth's land.surface. For such ecosystems to retain prod.ctivity and.biod.versity und.r climatic change, it would.be valuable to id.ntify/promote keystone plant species that(i) have d.veloped.strategies to more efficiently utilize moisture resources not easily accessible and.ii) improve moisture cond.tions for neighboring plants. The very d.ep-rooted.Ziziphus lotus, consid.red.an ecosystem engineer, is one such example. However, it is not known which biotic traits:(a) canopy interception of moisture/rainfall,(b) hyd.aulic red.stribution of d.ep ground.moisture by roots, or nonbiotic factors:(c) soil's volume, and.d. organic matter content, Z. lotus activates/mod.lates to play such a role. We, thus, selected.d.yland.ecosystems where the plant d.minates and.measured.for potential effects on the less d.ep-rooted.Thymbra capitata. For assessing impacts on ecosystem prod.ctivity, we measured.the spatial aggregation of ca. 3600 T. capitata plants. As a proxy for soil moisture availability and.its spatial variability, we cond.cted.a 7-year-long stud. using thymes' nighttime rehyd.ation. Sampling extend.d.up to 15 m away from Z. *** The d.nsity of T. capitata plants growing up to 5 m around.Z. lotus vs. thymes growing 10–15 m away was found.significantly increased.2.5–4.5 times), while their stem/leaf moisture was ca. 10% higher at pred.wn compared.to nightfall d.ring the d.y season. This suggests that ecosystem prod.ctivity is d.iven by a greater soil moisture availability around.Z. lotus permitting more thyme d.ytime transpiration, in contrast to thymes growing further away. The phenomenon appeared.only und.r d.y topsoil(d.ring the d.y season; becoming stronger d.ring d.y years).
