The steady progress in medical diagnosis and treatment of diseases largely hinges on the steady development and improvement of modern imaging *** spectroscopy has attracted increasing attention for clinical applications as it is label-free,non-invasive,and delivers molecular fingerprinting information of a *** combination with fiber optic probes,it also allows easy access to different body parts of a ***,image acquisition with fiber optic probes is currently not ***,we introduce a fiber optic probe-based Raman imaging system for the real-time molecular virtual reality data visualization of chemical boundaries on a computer screen and the physical *** approach is developed around a computer vision-based positional tracking system in conjunction with photometric stereo and augmented and mixed chemical reality,enabling molecular imaging and direct visualization of molecular boundaries of three-dimensional *** proposed approach achieves a spatial resolution of 0.5 mm in the transverse plane and a topology resolution of 0.6 mm,with a spectral sampling frequency of 10 Hz,and can be used to image large tissue areas in a few minutes,making it highly suitable for clinical tissueboundary demarcation.A variety of applications on biological samples,i.e.,distribution of pharmaceutical compounds,brain-tumor phantom,and various types of sarcoma have been characterized,showing that the system enables rapid and intuitive assessment of molecular boundaries.

Apoplastic barriers of Populus×canescens roots in reaction to different cultivation conditions and abiotic stress treatments

Populus is an important tree genus frequently cultivated for economical ***,the high sensitivity of poplars towards water deficit,drought,and salt accumulation significantly affects plant productivity and limits biomass *** cultivation and abiotic stress conditions have been described to significantly induce the formation of apoplastic barriers(Casparian bands and suberin lamellae)in roots of different monocotyledonous crop ***,this study aimed to investigate to which degree the roots of the dicotyledonous gray poplar(Populus×canescens)react to a set of selected cultivation conditions(hydroponics,aeroponics,or soil)and abiotic stress treatments(abscisic acid,oxygen deficiency)because a differing stress response could potentially help in explaining the observed higher stress *** apoplastic barriers of poplar roots cultivated in different environments were analyzed by means of histochemistry and gas chromatography and compared to the available literature on monocotyledonous crop ***,dicotyledonous poplar roots showed only a remarkably low induction or enhancement of apoplastic barriers in response to the different cultivation conditions and abiotic stress *** genetic optimization(e.g.,overexpression of biosynthesis key genes)of the apoplastic barrier development in poplar roots might result in more stress-tolerant cultivars in the future.

ORS1, an H2O2-Responsive NAC Transcription Factor, Controls Senescence in Arabidopsis thaliana

We report here that ORS1, a previously uncharacterized member of the NAC transcription factor family, controls leaf senescence in Arabidopsis thaliana. Overexpression of ORS1 accelerates senescence in transgenic plants, whereas its inhibition delays it. Genes acting downstream of ORS1 were identified by global expression analysis using transgenic plants producing dexamethasone-inducible ORSl-GR fusion protein. Of the 42 up-regulated genes, 30 （-70%） were pre- viously shown to be up-regulated during age-dependent senescence, We also observed that 32 （-76%） of the ORSl-dependent genes were induced by long-term （4 d）, but not short-term （6 h） salinity stress （150 mM NaCI）. Furthermore, expression of 16 and 24 genes, respectively, was induced after 1 and 5 h of treatment with hydrogen peroxide （H2O2）, a reactive oxygen species known to accumulate during salinity stress. ORS1 itself was found to be rapidly and strongly induced by H2O2 treatment in both leaves and roots. Using in vitro binding site selection, we determined the preferred binding motif of ORS1 and found it to be present in half of the ORSl-dependent genes. ORS1 is a paralog of ORE1/ ANACO92/AtNAC2, a previously reported regulator of leaf senescence. Phylogenetic footprinting revealed evolutionary conservation of the ORS1 and ORE1 promoter sequences in different Brassicaceae species, indicating strong positive selection acting on both genes. We conclude that ORS1, similarly to ORE1, triggers expression of senescence-associated genes through a regulatory network that may involve cross-talk with saltand H2O2-dependent signaling pathways.

Sperm quality improvement after date seed oil in Vitro supplementation in spontaneous and induced oxidative stress

In vitro supplementation with date seed oil （DSO） can protect spermatozoa against hydrogen peroxide （HiO2）- mediated damage and can improve sperm function, possibly owing to antioxidant properties. We tested the antioxidant effects of DSO on human sperm motility, sperm viability, reacted acrosome and lipid peroxidation assessed in vitro after H202-mediated oxidative damage in spermatozoa. Sixteen patients （mean age： 35 years; range： 25-45 years） referred to the Histology-Embryology Laboratory of the Medicine Faculty of Sfax for semen analysis after 12-24 months of sexual intercourse without conception were selected. After spermiogram, sperm selection by twointerface discontinuous Sill Select gradient was performed, and selected spermatozoa were used in four experimental assays： control; incubation with 100um H2O2; incubation with 0.1% DSO; and co-incubation with 0.1% DSO and 100 um H2O2. Motility and viability were determined using World Health Organization criteria. Acrosome reaction and lipid peroxidation were assessed by staining with fluorescein isothiocyanate-Pisum sativum and spectrophotometric measurement of malondialdehyde, respectively. Results showed that incubation with H2O2 alone led to a significant increase in lipid peroxidation （57.83%, P 〈 0.05） associated with a significant decrease in sperm motility, sperm viability （after 30 min and 24 h） and percentage of reacted acrosome （P 〈 0.05）. Date seed oil im- proved sperm motility after 24 h of incubation （P 〈 0.05） and protected spermatozoa against the deleterious effects of H2O2 on motility, viability, acrosome reaction and lipid peroxidation. We conclude that supplementation with DSO may have a function in antioxidant protection against male infertility.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is closely related to insulin resistance,type 2 diabetes mellitus,and *** is nowadays considered a multisystem disease with a strong association with cardiovascular disease and arterial hypertension,which interfere with changes in the coagulation *** disorders are common in patients with hepatic impairment and are dependent on the degree of liver *** with NAFLD may have preserved overall hemostatic profile,but many studies suggest a trend toward a procoagulant *** state in NAFLD patients may even induce progression of hepatic *** dysfunction is present in the systemic and portal vein circulation in NAFLD patients,and platelets are being recognized as modulators of liver diseases through various *** a literature review,we discuss possible disorders in the coagulation cascade and fibrinolysis,endothelial dysfunction,and platelet abnormalities in patients with *** the processes and mechanisms involved in the hemostatic abnormalities associated with NAFLD,directly related to liver disease or indirectly related through inflam-matory processes and metabolic disorders,several potential therapeutic targets have been identified and reviewed here.

Cheese whey proteins are natural vehicles for biological agents that are used as an inexpensive and effective coating material in the encapsulation of *** this work,the yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus,of probiotic potential,was associated with the prebiotic Plantago ovata(Psyllium)in particles coated with cheese *** efficiency of encapsulation,gastrointestinal tract(GIT)viability,particle morphology,and adhesion to enteral cells were *** was encapsulated in different formulations with alginate(alg),psyllium(psy),and cheese whey(cw)through an extrusion process associated with vibrational *** encapsulated in different wall materials[alginate-psyllium-cheese whey(alg-psy-cw),alginate(alg),alginate-psyllium(alg-psy),and alginate-cheese whey(alg-cw)]were adequately protected,resulting in high cell viability(11.32,9.77,9.13,10.95 log CFU.g􀀀1,respectively).Regarding the bioavailability assay after three months of storage under refrigeration(±4℃),cells encapsulated in wall material alg-psy-cw demonstrated the best viability(>6 log CFU.g^(-1)).Encapsulated yeasts showed greater resistance to acidic conditions when exposed to simulations of the gastrointestinal tract,demonstrating a lower diffusion rate in the formulation made with wall material alg-psy-cw(10.03 log CFU.g^(-1)).The adhesion rate to Caco-2 cells was high(±3,166 yeasts/100 Caco-2 cells).Finally,the developed product in this study was found to be suitable for incorporation in functional foods,as well as in pharmaceutical products,demonstrating its biotechnological potential.

Bariatric surgery offers the best health results in overweight and obese patients but is not a risk and/or complication-free *** cases with additional hyperglycemia,the burden of surgery can be even higher and alter both shortterm and long-term *** bariatric surgery offers glycemic improvements and in the case of early onset diabetes disease remission,weight loss results are lower than for obese patients without *** multimodal programs,usually including interventions related to patients’performance,nutritional and psychological status as well as currently available pharmacotherapy before the surgery itself might considerably improve the immediate and late postoperative ***,there are still no clear guidelines addressing the prehabilitation of obese patients with dysglycemia undergoing bariatric surgery and therefore no unique protocols to improve patients’*** this minireview,we summarize the current knowledge on prehabilitation before bariatric surgery procedures in patients with obesity and dysglycemia.
