strong>Purpose:strong> Report of series of cases of cortical blindness that occurred after neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic by analysing its epidemiological frequency in black Africa. strong>Methodology:strong> This is the report of two clinical cases received in consultation on Monday 16sup>thsup> November 2020 and Thursday 7sup>thsup> January 2021 in the paediatric ophthalmology department of the IOTA-University Hospital. strong>Results:strong> They are two infants, aged 05 and 17 months respectively, who were brought in for consultation by their mother for lack of eye-tracking movement since birth. Both infants were born at term following a dystocic delivery. At birth, both infants had a very poor Apar score and were given a resuscitation treatment. The clinical examination coupled with the results of the paraclinical examinations allowed us to conclude at cortical blindness induced the neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. Their therapeutic management, in collaboration with the neurologist, included the combination of piracetam suspension and Valproate sodium syrup. The evolution after three months of treatment is marked by the regression of epileptic seizures and the perception of light. strong>Conclusion:strong> In black Africa, neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy is the second leading cause of cortical blindness in children, after the neuromalaria sequels.

Fertilization practices can influence the quality of pineapple fruit and consequently its acceptability by consumers who are increasingly oriented towards high quality agri-food products. This study aimed at evaluating the influence of N, P and K on some physico-chemical and organoleptic characteristics of pineapple (Ananas comosus L. Merr) for fresh consumption and juice processing. A complete NPK factorial design was installed in the south Benin. The treatments NPK in g plant-1 were randomized into four blocks: T1;T2;T3;T4;T5;T6;T7;T8;T9. Brix juice was determined using a refractometer and pH with a pH meter. An evaluation of sensory characteristics such as sweetness, acid taste and aroma of fresh pineapple pulp and processed juice was made by a panel of tasters selected and trained. A principal components analysis, followed by a numerical classification was performed on fruits’ sensory and physicochemical characteristics. Results showed that juice pH was significantly influenced by the phosphorus and potassium. Potassium influenced significantly juice yield. some physico-chemical characteristics and sensory attributes were correlated between them and groups of treatments are formed for both the juice and the fresh fruit.

Clinical Presentations and Outcome of Cardiovascular Emergencies in Yaounde: A Cross-sectional study

Background: Cardiovascular emergencies have become a public health problem with a high burden in low-income settings. This is due to the high rates of cardiovascular risk factors that are fast reaching epidemic?proportions. There is paucity of data on cardiovascular emergencies to guide repost strategies in our setting. Our aim was to determine the clinical presentation and outcome of cardiovascular emergencies at Yaounde Emergency Center.?Methods: We carried out this cross-sectional study between June 2015 and May 2017. We included all patients with confirmed cardiovascular emergency. We consecutively collected data on socio-demography, symptoms on admission, past history, clinical findings, and final diagnosis at discharge or in the event of death. Results: Of the 8285 patients admitted for medical emergencies, 388 (4.7%) were cardiovascular emergencies. Their mean age was 59.5 ± 13.8 years, and 59% were males. The Medical Emergency Aid service was the means of transporting 4% of patients. The median time of arrival at the hospital was 48 hours. symptoms on admission were mainly weakness of a limb (43.8%), and altered consciousness (33.5%). The most common cardiovascular emergencies were ischemic stroke (30.9%), hypertensive emergency (21.4%), and hemorrhagic stroke (16.5%). The most common comorbidity was diabetes (21.9%). The death rate in the 24 - 72 hours was 14.4%. The causes of death were hypertensive emergency (35.7%), and hemorrhagic stroke (30.3%). Conclusion: stroke and hypertensive emergency were the most frequent cardiovascular emergencies. The early mortality was high. Hemorrhagic stroke and hypertensive emergencies accounted for most cases of death.

Hydro-sedimentary Dynamics of the Grand-Popo Lagoon Located Upstream of the Mobile Embouchure “Bouche du Roy” in south-Western Benin

The problems of flooding, bank erosion and even the breaching of the barrier beach by the Grand-Popo lagoon are a concern in the south-western Beninese river-lagoon complex. The present study aims to improve the knowledge of the factors controlling the hydro-sedimentary functioning of this lagoon of Grand-Popo. It was based on bathymetric and sedimentological studies and the analysis of physical-chemical parameters of the water and allowed to know the morphology of the lagoon bottom and the distribution of sedimentary facies according to the intensity of the water current. The salinity of the lagoon waters shows a west-east gradient passing thus from 0‰ to 0.78‰ in the main direction of flow. Over the whole lagoon system, the average liquid flows vary from -38.499 to 159.13 msup>3sup>/s. The bathymetry indicates depths varying from 0.4 to 6.5 m, revealing type V and type U lagoon bottoms which reflect acute bottom concavities marked by hollowing under the effect of strong currents or by sandy terraces resulting from the continuous input of sediments carried by the Mono River. These sediments are heterogeneously distributed in the lagoon bottom and vary from free sand to mud. Given the complexity of the factors that control the hydro-sedimentary functioning of the Grand-Popo lagoon, it is recommended that periodic hydrological and bathymetric monitoring be carried out to locate exceptional variations in water levels to prevent not only the risks of overflowing lagoon waters and the flooding that follows but also spectacular erosion of the lagoon banks.

Context and Aim: Mesenchymal stem cells (MsCs) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) have emerged as ideal candidates for advanced therapies of various therapeutically-challenging diseases;however, their regenerative potential in diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) has not been well determined. In this study, we reviewed our clinical experience in mitigating chronic ulcer complications of diabetic foot through a conventional treatment of autologous adipose-derived MsCs embedded in PRF with pure PRF injections. Materials and Methods: The present study was carried out in 10 patients with an open DFU wound selected over a period of 1 year starting from April 2019. Patients were either injected with PRF alone (Group A) or injected with MsCs derived from adipose tissue (ADMsC) embedded in (PRF (Group B). Results: Patients in Group B had a better healing index when compared to Group A. Conclusion: Use of ADMsC embedded in PRF showed promising results to treat DFU.

By the functional B3LYP and M05-2X of DFT and in two bases set, more and more extended (6-311G and 6-311G (d, p)), theoretical study of antioxidant properties of four hydrazones was carried out. The calculations made concern the geometrical, spectroscopic and electronic parameters of the molecules. Analysis of the results relating to the geometrical parameters was carried out by calculating interatomic distances, relative errors between calculated values and those obtained experimentally by X-ray diffraction found in the literature. The 13C NMR spectra were calculated by GIAO (Gauge Including Atomic Orbitals) methods, and the results were subjected to statistical analysis by calculating Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD), Root Mean. square (RMs) and the correlation coefficient (R2), in comparison with experimental spectra. The analysis of the results of calculations of various electronic parameters (hardness (η), softness (s), electronegativity (χ), electrophile index (ω), energy gap (HOMO-LUMO)) reveals that, overall, the methods M05-2X/6-311G (d, p) and B3LYP/6-311G (d, p) found that (R) - (?) - carvone salicylhydrazone (N2) is the most antioxidant molecule of the four molecules and also classify them according to their stability. This confirms the results obtained on the antitrypanosomal activity, the toxicity, the cytotoxicity and the selectivity of the synthesized compounds. ?

In the framework of fighting against the poor quality medicines sold in developing countries using classical analytical methods easily accessible in those countries, four UV-Visible spectrophotometric methods for one antimalarial (quinine) and two antibiotics (amoxicillin and metronidazole) have been developed and validated according to the total error strategy using the accuracy profiles as a decision tool. The dosing range was 2 - 10 μg/mL (for quinine sulfate in tablet), 4 - 12 μg/mL (for quinine bichlorhydrate in oral drop-metronidazole benzaote in oral suspension) and 15 - 35 μg/mL (for amoxicillin trihydrate in capsule). The validated methods were then applied in determining the content of some analogous medicines sold in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Thus, the proposed UV-Visible spectrophotometric methods are simple and suitable to quantify quinine, amoxicillin and metronidazole in different pharmaceutical forms.

Congenital Malaria in the Borgou/Alibori Regional University Teaching Hospital: Myth or Reality?

Introduction: The occurrence of malaria is classically described as uncommon or exceptional in the neonatal period. This work aims to describe the epidemiological, diagnostic, therapeutic, clinical features and outcomes of congenital malaria in the Borgou/Alibori Regional University Teaching Hospital (CHUD B/A) located in Parakou. Patients and Methods: This research is a cross-sectional and descriptive study that was conducted in the neonatal intensive care unit of the CHUD B/A from January to December 2017. It included and involved all newborns less than eight (08) days old with positive thick smears. Comorbidities were taken into account to establish the diagnosis of congenital malaria with accuracy. Findings: A total of 170 newborns out of 892 newborns admitted tested positive with Plasmodium falciparum thick smears, i.e., a hospital-based frequency of 19%. The sex ratio was 1.1. The mean age was 22.44 ± 2.72 hours. There was malaria-bacterial infection comorbidity in 39.3% of cases. Among the 91 cases of thick smears testing positive without stigma of bacterial infection, G6PD deficiency and fetal-maternal Rhesus incompatibility, the main reasons for admission were prematurity (51.6%), low birth weight (44%), neonatal distress (31.8%) and respiratory distress (15.3%). In addition, the main signs found during the physical examination were neurological disorders or impairments (43.9%), respiratory distress (30%), hyperthermia (12.1%) and jaundice (4.4%). The mean or median parasitemia was 490 parasites/μl, with extremes ranging from 100 to 6500 parasites/μl. Treatment was based on artemisinin derivatives. The patient condition improved in 88.7% of cases. Overall mortality was estimated at 11.9%, and the specific mortality was 13.2%. Conclusion: Congenital malaria is a reality that actually prevails in the CHUDB/A. It has become vital and urgent to explore innovative, effective and efficient strategies to ensure its management and prevention. A study using PCR as t

strong>Background:strong> Druses of the papilla constitute abnormal deposits of calcified hyaline material at the level of the head of the optic nerve. They can be superficial or deep. strong>Aim:strong> The aim of this study is to show the utility of ocular ultrasound in ophthalmology in underdeveloped countries for the characterization of optic disc druse. strong>Case Presentation:strong> Our study relates to a clinical observation of buried papillary druses diagnosed by ocular ultrasound. The ophthalmologic examination revealed an aspect of false papillary edema in the fundus. The ocular ultrasound revealed hyperechogenic deposits buried in the papillary margins, which suggests the deep papillary druses. strong>Conclusion:strong> Ocular ultrasound still has a prominent place in the diagnosis of certain eye conditions despite the new sophisticated means available to ophthalmology to date.

Primary Headache Disorders in HIV-Infected Patients within a Hospital setting in sub-saharan Africa, Benin Case: Prevalence and Associated Factors

Introduction: Headache disorders are common in HIV-infected patients. These disorders are either primary or secondary. Objective: Determine prevalence and factors associated with primary headache disorders in HIV+ patients. Method: It was a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study conducted from 2nd May 2017 to 2nd August 2017 which included HIV+ patients aged 18 years and above. Diagnosis of primary headache disorders was carried out by a Neurologist on the basis of ICHD-II diagnostic criteria. The?dependent variable was primary headache disorders. Epi Info Version 7.***.1.0 and sTATA11 were used for data analysis. P Results: Primary headache disorders prevalence was 25.2% (124/493).Tension-type headache represented 77.41%. HIV+ patients were aged 42.63 ± 10.14 years. sex-ratio was estimated at 0.14. Factors associated with primary headache disorders in HIV+ patients were: male (0.36 [0.17 - 0.77];P = 0.008), Dendi ethnicity (14.8 [2.08 - 101.99];P = 0.007), trader (3.09 [01.25 - 7.62];P = 0.02), WHO clinical stage (3.20 [1.43 - 7.17];P = 0.005), screening duration (1.01 [1.00 - 1.01];P = 0.00), hypertension (10.28 [4.44 - 23.83];P ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: This study helped to determine the standard profile of HIV+ patient with primary headache disorders. It will contribute to save costs associated with paraclinical examinations, while in search of secondary etiologies within an African context with limited financial resources.
