Autologous tissue patch rich in stem cells created in the subcutaneous tissue

AIM:To investigate whether we could create natural autologous tissue patches in the subcutaneous space for organ repair. METHODS: We implanted the following three types of inert foreign bodies in the subcutaneous tissue of rats to produce autologous tissue patches of different geometries:(1) a large-sized polyvinyl tube(L = 25 mm,internal diameter = 7 mm) sealed at both ends by heat application for obtaining a large flat piece of tissue patch for organ repair;(2) a fine polyvinyl tubing(L = 25 mm,internal diameter = 3 mm) for creating cylindrically shaped grafts for vascular or nerve repair; and(3) a slurry of polydextran particle gel for inducing a bladder-like tissue. Implantation of inert materials was carried out by making a small incision on one or either side of the thoracic-lumbar region of rats. Subcutaneous pockets were created by blunt dissection around the incision into which the inert bodies were inserted(1 or 2 per rat). The incisions were closed with silk sutures,and the animals were allowed to recover. In case of the polydextran gel slurry 5 m L of the slurry was injected in the subcutaneous space using an 18 gauge needle. After implanting the foreign bodies a newly regenerated encapsulating tissue developed around the foreign bodies. The tissues were harvested after 4-42 d of implantation and studied by gross examination,histology,and histochemistry for organization,vascularity,and presence of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)(CD271+CD34+ cells). RESULTS: Implanting a large cylindrically shaped polyvinyl tube resulted in a large flat sheet of tissue that could be tailored to a specific size and shape for use as a tissue patch for repairing large organs. Implanting a smaller sized polyvinyl tube yielded a cylindrical tissue that could be useful for repairing nerves and blood vessels. Touristic urbanization and greening of coastal dune fields:A long-term assessment of a temperate sandy barrier of Argentina

Dune barrier systems represent highly sought-after coastal landscapes for tourism and urban development around the world. However, a century ago, they were considered hazardous environments due to their great dynamic nature. As a result, stabilization practices were considered necessary. The systematic introduction of fast-growing exotic trees helped stabilize the sand, making it easier for tourism urbanization to take place, but also leading to erosion processes. This paper aims to assess long-term changes in vegetation cover over a large temperate barrier in Argentina. This complex region includes urban resorts, afforestation zones, and protected areas. A GIS-based geospatial analysis was conducted using a large satellite database(> 350 images), and the future evolution of the vegetation was modeled. The results revealed two primary spatiotemporal patterns associated with a gradual expansion of vegetation cover, accompanied by a concurrent reduction in sandy areas. In 1986, the dune area comprised 75% more surface than vegetation, whereas in 2021, it represented 60% less than vegetation. Furthermore, the 2050 scenario suggests a potential 40% reduction of dunes in certain areas. It is necessary to enhance management actions aimed at maintaining dune mobility and ensuring local and regional sediment balance. Long-term management strategies must focus on restoring native plant communities and controlling invasive species, and avoiding new dune fixation initiatives based on the introduction of exotic species.

A generalization of the half-normal distribution

In this paper we introduce an extension of the half-normal distribution in order to model a great variety of non-negative data. Its hazard rate function can be decreasing or increasing, depending on its parameters. Some properties of this new distribution are presented. For example, we give a general expression for the moments and a stochastic representation. Also, the cumulative distribution function, the hazard rate function, the survival function and the quantile function can be easily evaluated. Maximum likelihood estimators can be computed by using numerical procedures. Finally, a real-life dataset has been presented to illustrate its applicability.

To the Editor:We read with great interest the recent article by Zhu et al.[1].In the study,the authors analyzed the outcomes of 26 patients diagnosed with hepatic artery occlusion(HAO)and treated with an endovascular approach(EVT)within the first 30 days after ortho-topic liver transplantation(LT).The median interval from LT to EVT was 7 days,most patients were treated with angioplasty and only two(7.7%)needed stent *** authors should be congrat-ulated as they achieved a 100%of success rate with an 80.8%of 1-year survival rate.

Recently, Clancy [SIR epidemic models with general infectious period distribution, Statist. Prob. Left. 85 （2014） 1-5] has shown how SIR epidemics in which individuals＇ infection periods are not necessarily exponentially distributed may be modeled in terms of a piecewise-deterministic Markov process （PDMP）. In this paper, we present a more detailed description of the underlying PDMP, from which we analyze the population transmission number and the infection probability of a certain susceptible individual.

Comparison between type-2 and type-1 myocardial infarction：clinical features, treatment strategies and outcomes

Objective To assess the differences in incidence, clinical features, current treatment strategies and outcome in patients with type-2vs. type-1 acute myocardial infarction （AMI）.Methods We included 824 consecutive patients with a diagnosis of type-1 or type-2 AMI. Dur-ing index hospitalization, clinical features and treatment strategies were collected in detail. At 1-year follow-up, mortality, stroke, non-fatal myocardial infarction and major bleeding were ***-1 AMI was present in 707 （86%） of the cases while 117 （14%） were classified as type-2. Patients with type-2 AMI were more frequently female and had higher co-morbidities such as diabetes, previous non-ST segment elevation acute coronary syndromes, impaired renal function, anaemia, atrial fibrillation and malignancy. However, preserved left ventricular ejection fraction and normal coronary arteries were more frequently seen, an invasive treatment was less common, and anti-platelet medications, statins and beta-blockers were less prescribed in patients with type-2 AMI. At 1-year follow-up, type-2 AMI was associated with a higher crude mortality risk （HR： 1.75, 95% CI： 1.14-2.68;P = 0.001）, but this association did not remain significant after multivariable adjustment （P = 0.785）. Furthermore, we did not find type-2 AMI to be associated with other clinical *** In this real-life population, compared with type-1, type-2 AMI were predominantly women and had more co-morbidities. Invasive treatment strategies and cardioprotective medications were less used in type-2, while the 1-year clinical outcomes were similar.

Laurel forests are quite relevant for biodiversity conservation and are among the island ecosystems most severely damaged by human *** the past,Canary laurel forests have been greatly altered by logging,livestock and *** remains of laurel forests are currently protected in the Canary Islands(Spain).However,we miss basic information needed for their restoration and adaptive management,such as tree longevity,growth potential and responsiveness to natural and anthropogenic *** dendrochronological methods,we studied how forest dynamic is related to land-use change and windstorms in two well-preserved laurel forests on Tenerife *** cores were collected from over 80 trees per stand at three stands per *** used ring-width series to estimate tree ages and calculate annual basal area increments(BAI),cumulative diameter increases,and changes indicative of released and suppressed *** tree species were found in all stands,with Laurus novocanariensis,Ilex canariensis and Morella faya being the most common *** some individuals were over 100 years old,61.8%-88.9% of the trees per stand established between 1940 and 1970,coinciding with a post-war period of land abandonment,rural exodus and the onset of a tourism *** trees have shown growth rates larger than 1 cm diameter per year and most species have had increasing BAI trends over the past *** growth releases occurred after windstorms at both sites,but the effects of windstorms were site-dependent,with the 1958 storm affecting mainly the eastern tip of the island(Anaga massif)and the 1991 storm the western tip(Teno massif).Given the great ability of laurel forest trees to establish after land use cessation and to increase growth after local disturbances such as windstorms,passive restoration may be sufficient to regenerate this habitat in currently degraded areas.
