BACKGROUND The predictive value of bleeding risk scores for atrial fibrillation in older patients is not as well *** goal of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of HASBLED,ORBiT and ATRiA for major bleeding(MB)and intracranial hemorrhage(iCH)in patients≥75 years with atrial fibrillation and oral anticoagulation(OAC).METHODS A retrospective unicenter study including patients≥75 years with atrial fibrillation(AF)and OAC.A total of 7613 patients≥75 years with AF and OAC included between 2014 and 2018(registry:NCT04364516).We analyzed the discriminative value of HASBLED,ATRiA and ORBiT scores for bleeding endpoints(major bleeding as primary endpoint and intracerebral hemorrhage as secondary).Cox regression was used to predict major bleeding with each scale and also for searching other variables potentially predictor of major *** discrimination was assessed using Harrell’s *** was assessed with goodness-of-fit test proposed by Gronnesby and *** During a mean follow up of 4.0 years(iQR:2.4–5.7 years),729 patients developed MB(2.61 per 100 patients/year)and 243 patients developed iCH(0.85 per 100 patients/year).Three scores showed a low discrimination for major bleeding,being ORBiT the best(HASBLED C statistic=0.557;ATRiA C statistic=0.568;ORBiT C statistic=0.595)and also a low discrimination for iCH(HASBLED C statistic=0.509;ATRiA C statistic=0.522;ORBiT C statistic=0.526).Among the variables that are part of the scores and other baseline characteristics,after multivariable adjustment only sex(male),dementia,prior admission for bleeding,anemia and liver disease were found as a predictors of *** in older patients under oral anticoagulation with atrial fibrillation,the risk scores HASBLED,ATRiA and ORBiT showed a weak discrimination for major bleeding and intracranial ***,other better alternatives should be evaluated for this purpose.

A differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) method for amantadine (AT) determination is developed. To this end, all the chemical and instrumental variables affecting the determination of amantadine are optimized. These studies have used three types of glassy-carbon electrode, first electrode which has not undergone surface modification or coating, to then modify the working electrode surface with two kinds of suspensions: graphene and graphene-cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]). From studies of the mechanisms governing the electrochemical response of amantadine, it was concluded that it is an electrochemically system with a diffusive reduction phenomenon. Under optimal conditions and with the appropriate electrode modification, we proceed to study the relation between the peak intensity with the analyte concentration. Thus, we find that when the electrode surface is covered with graphene-CB[7], two linear sections are obtained, the first one in the concentration range of between 0.05 μg·mL﹣1 and 0.75 μg·mL﹣1;and the second one between 1.00 μg·mL﹣1 and 6.00 μg·mL﹣1, with Er (%) = 87 and R.S.D. = 0.94% (n = 10 at 0.5 μg·mL﹣1 level). The minimum detectable amount was 15 ng·mL﹣1 while a concentration of 44 ng·mL﹣1 was calculated as determination limit. The optimized method was applied to the determination of amantadine in biological fluids.

introduction: Every year, more than 10 million women are diagnosed worldwide with breast cancer. Breast cancer remains the leading cause of death from malignancy in women. in Mexico about 12 Mexican women die every day from this disease. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) family consists of a group of isoenzymes involved in Phase ii detoxification of xenobiotics by glutathione conjugation. There have been reports showing GST polymorphisms as a risk factor for developing cancer. Objective: Determine if the frequencies of polymorphisms of GSTT1, GSTM1 and GSTP1 are associated with breast cancer development. Materials and Methods: We studied 22 women with breast cancer and a control group of 30 women. DNA was extracted from blood. Polymorphisms of T1 and M1 were identified by multiplex PCR. The identification of GSTP1b (exon 5) and GSTP1c (exon 6), was performed separately by RFLP-PCR, using BsmAi and Acii enzymes respectively. Results: Frequencies of polymorphisms were as follows: for breast cancer group 33% null GSTT1 vs 40% null in the control, 32% null GSTM1 vs 63% of control;63% heterozygote GSTP1b P1a/P1b and 18% homozygote P1b/P1b, vs 53% heterozygote and 20% homozygote in the control, 41% heterozygote P1a/P1c GSTP1c and 0% homozygote vs 10% heterozygote P1c/P1c and 0% homozygote control. Significant differences were found between GSTM1 and GSTP1c polymorphisms with GSTM1 null percentage higher in the control group and a higher frequency of P1c heterozygotes in the cancer group. Conclusion: As this is a pilot study where the results showed no association with breast cancer, further investigation is required on the involvement of GST genes in neoplasm development.

The treatment of chronic hepatitis C （CHC） is still far from optimal, particularly for those subpopulations that do not respond to the standard combination therapy with interferon-α （iFNα） plus ribavirin. Although in some cases the use of higher doses or longer treatment periods may be effective, these approaches are generally associated with a higher incidence of adverse events, which may either lead to a reduction in patient compliance or require drug withdrawal. iFNβ could represent an interesting alternative for treating CHC patients. Controversial data about iFNβ efficacy in CHC exist, the main reason being that many results stem from pilot studies with small cohorts of patients. However, promising results have been obtained in some subgroups of patients that fail to respond to iFNα. Additionally, the good tolerability of iFNβ represents an important advantage of the drug. The rates of dropouts in controlled clinical trials, as well as the need for dose reductions or treatment discontinuation are very low. it might be worth assessing the value of iFNβ plus ribavirin in randomized studies with a larger cohort of patients, not eligible or not tolerating standard therapy, and for non-responders.

Callus cultures of Annona muricata and Annona purpurea were induced in Murashige and Skoog(MS)medium supplemented with different concentrations of 1-naphthylacetic acid(NAA),6-benzyladenine(BA)and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid(2,4-D)utilized hypocotyls with *** highest percentage of callus formation was the treatment supplemented with 3 mg L-1 NAA for ***(100%)while for *** in lower percentage(75%).BA stimulated the formation of shoots in all the evaluated concentrations,being the concentration of 2 mg L-1 the one that induced the greater formation of shoots for ***(23 shoots/explant)and ***(28 shoots/explant).The content of total phenols,flavonoids and antioxidant activity was measured in the callus obtained from both *** results showed that a higher content of total phenols was quantified in callus of ***(27.8 mg g-1 dw)compared to ***(23.2 mg g-1 dw).The highest content of total flavonoids was observed in the callus of ***(8.0μg g-1 dw).Antioxidant activity was determined by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydracil radical *** concentration required for 50%inhibition(iC50)of the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydracil radicals were 4.22μg mL-1 in methanolic extracts of callus of ***,while in extracts of callus of *** was 2.86μg mL-1,in both cases was greater than that found for *** culture of the species studied in this work represents an alternative for the production of natural antioxidants.

in Mexico, the medicinal plants have been for used since ancient times and still continue to use by rural populations to treat conditions such as infectious diseases (skin, gastrointestinal or respiratory), metabolics, inflammatory problems, among others. This work includes a proposal that initiates the study and development of new biomaterials or vehicles with therapeutic application. The nanomolecular interaction of the organic extract of a plant (EOV) Distictis buccinatoria (dc) with different materials inert supports of inorganic type (bentonite, gel) determining their and combined anti-inflammatory activity is studied individually [1] [2]. The importance of the characterization of biomaterials by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is ability to analyze the structure on the surface of materials (organic, inorganic and biological) in the micro and nanometrics levels in order to correlate it with the sample surface properties such as roughness, interfacial phenomena, etc. With this technique we can also perform the chemical analysis at different levels (micro and nano) for information on the nature and composition of the materials [3] [4]. The biomaterial shows that higher anti-inflammatory activity is to be generated through the combination of EOV-gel, the nanostructure interaction SEM shows integrated particles agglome-rated form and porous due to the presence of EOV and some flat areas indicated the gel preponderance situation generated by the low interaction between materials of organic type and polar type (gel).

Alcohol use disorders represent a heterogeneous spectrum of clinical manifestations that have been defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5. Excessive alcohol intake can lead to damage of various organs, including the liver. Alcoholic liver disease includes different injuries ranging from steatosis to cirrhosis and implicates a diagnostic assessment of the liver disease and of its possible complications. There is growing interest in the possible different tools for assessing previous alcohol consumption and for establishing the severity of liver injury, especially by noninvasive methods.

Effect of low level laser therapy on dental pulp during orthodontic movement

AiM: To validate the protocol described here to be used in future clinical trials related to the effect of laser therapy on dental pulp. METHODS: Histologically treated samples from eight human healthy premolar teeth obtained from the middle root level were distributed in four groups: group 1(G1) absolute control; group 2(G2) only laser irradiation; group 3(G3) exposed only to orthodontics; and group 4(G4) treated with orthodontics and laser. Laser treatment was performed at 830 nm wavelength, 100 mW(energy 80 J/cm2, 2.2 J), for 22 s in the vestibular surface and 22 s in the palatal surface, 1 mm away from the dental root mucosa. Three staining methods were performed: hematoxylin-eosin(HE), Masson's Trichrome method and Gomori's ***: The pulp histology parameters were evaluated and the results classified in to 3 parts: an inflammatory response, soft tissue response(dental pulp) and hard tissue response(dentin and predentin). There was no inflammation(chronic or acute) in any of the evaluated groups. The zones of pulp necrosis were found in one premolar of G3 and in one of G4; in groups G2 and G4 there was higher angiogenesis than in the other two groups. G4 group presented the highest level of vascularization. A reduced nerve density was observed in G3. A G2 specimen showed increased nerve density. A higher rate of calcification was observed in G1 compared to G2. Denticles, either real or false, were observed in G1, G2 and G3. Sclerosis of dentin and focal dentin loss was observed among all the groups. Secondary dentin was present in one sample in G1 and G2. A necrosis zone was found in one sample of G3 and G4. No differences between groups were observed in the odontoblast irregularity layer but the layer was wider in the group treated with laser only. A notable difference was detected in reduction of the cell-free layer between the groups G1 and G4. The findings in pulp tissue favor its adaptative response against dental movement induced by orthodontics.
