The emergence of a new era reaching beyond current state-of-the-art ultrashort and ultraintense laser technology has been enabled by the approval of around V 850 million worth of structural funds in 2011–2012 by the European Commission for the installation of Extreme Light infrastructure(ELi).The ELi project consists of three pillars being built in the Czech Republic,Hungary,and *** challenging proposal is based on recent technical progress allowing ultraintense laser fields in which intensities will soon be reaching as high as i0∼1023Wcm−*** tremendous technological advance has been brought about by the invention of chirped pulse amplification by Mourou and *** is hosting the ELi for Nuclear Physics(ELi-NP)pillar in M˘agurele near *** new facility,currently under construction,is intended to serve the broad national,European,and international scientific *** mission covers scientific research at the frontier of knowledge involving two *** first is laser-driven experiments related to NP,strong-field quantum electrodynamics,and associated vacuum *** second research domain is based on the establishment of a Compton-backscattering-based,high-brilliance,and intenseγbeam with Eγ≲19.5 MeV,which represents a merger between laser and accelerator *** system will allow the investigation of the nuclear structure of selected isotopes and nuclear reactions of relevance,for example,to astrophysics with hitherto unprecedented resolution and *** addition to fundamental themes,a large number of applications with significant societal impact will be *** implementation of the project started in January 2013 and is spearheaded by the ELi-NP/Horia Hulubei National institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering(iFiN-HH).Experiments will begin in early 2020.

We report on the generation and delivery of 10.2 PW peak power laser pulses,using the High Power Laser System at the Extreme Laser infrastructure–Nuclear Physics *** this work we demonstrate for the first time,to the best of our knowledge,the compression and propagation of full energy,full aperture,laser pulses that reach a power level of more than 10 PW.

We report on a two-arm hybrid high-power laser system(HPLS)able to deliver 2×10 PW femtosecond pulses,developed at the Bucharest-Magurele Extreme Light infrastructure Nuclear Physics(ELi-NP)Facility.A hybrid frontend(FE)based on a Ti:sapphire chirped pulse amplifier and a picosecond optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier based on beta barium borate(BBO)crystals,with a cross-polarized wave(XPW)filter in between,has been *** delivers 10 mJ laser pulses,at 10 Hz repetition rate,with more than 70 nm spectral bandwidth and high-intensity contrast,in the range of 1013:*** high-energy Ti:sapphire amplifier stages of both arms were seeded from this common *** final high-energy amplifier,equipped with a 200 mm diameter Ti:sapphire crystal,has been pumped by six 100 J nanosecond frequency doubled Nd:glass lasers,at 1 pulse/min repetition *** than 300 J output pulse energy has been obtained by pumping with only 80%of the whole 600 J available pump *** compressor has a transmission efficiency of 74%and an output pulse duration of 22.7 fs was measured,thus demonstrating that the dual-arm HPLS has the capacity to generate 10 PW peak power femtosecond *** reported results represent the cornerstone of the ELi-NP 2×10 PW femtosecond laser facility,devoted to fundamental and applied nuclear physics research.
