Wi.h X-ray di.fracti.n and DSC analysi., i. i. found that 4 cycles of si.teri.g at 593 K are necessary for the complete producti.n of the low-temperature phase (LTP) MnBi. The c/a of the fabri.ated LTP MnBi.i. 1.4286. Metastable phase MnBi. formed i. pri.ary si.teri.g stage of LTP MnBi.has the si.i.ar crystal structure and latti.e constant wi.h the quenched hi.h-temperature phase (HTP) Mn1.08Bi. The structural di.ferences between MnBi. phase and Mn1.08Bi.phase are di.cussed. The LTP MnBi.phase i. unstable for strong mechani.al mi.li.g as Bi.appears after mi.li.g over 7200 s i. the present mi.li.g condi.i.n. Strai.s caused by the mechani.al attri.i.n are di.fi.ult to accumulate i. the MnBi.crystals, and the crystal si.e of the mi.led MnBi.i. only 30 nm before the presence of grai.s coalescence. The whole mi.li.g process can be classi.i.d i.to 3 stages i.di.ated by the structural changes. Based on the structural parameter calculati.n, the changes of atomi. confi.urati.ns i. every stage have been di.cussed. The exi.tence of Bi.equi.alent vacancy si.e i. consi.ered to play an i.portant role i. the di.orderi.g processes of Mn and Bi.atoms.

The mi.robi.l communi.y structures of two mesophi.i. anaerobi. chemostats, one fed wi.h glucose, the other wi.h starch as sole carbon sources, were studi.d at vari.us di.uti.n rates （0.05-0.25 d-1 for glucose and 0.025-0.1 d-1 for starch） duri.g two years conti.uous operati.n. i. the glucose-fed chemostat, the aceti.lasti. methanogen Methanosaeta spp. and hydrogenotrophi. methanogen Methanoculleus spp. predomi.ated at low di.uti.n rates, whereas Methanosaeta spp. and the hydrogenotrophi. Methanobacteri.m spp. predomi.ated together when di.uti.n rates were greater than 0.1 d 1. Bacteri. affi.i.ted wi.h the phyla Bacteroi.etes, Spi.o- chaetes, and Acti.obacteri. predomi.ated at di.uti.n rates of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15 d-l, respecti.ely, whi.e Fi.mi.utes predomi.ated at hi.her di.uti.n rates （0.2 and 0.25 d-l）. i. the starch-fed chemostat, the aceti.lasti. and hydrogeno- trophi. methanogens coexi.ted at all di.uti.n rates. Although bacteri. belongi.g to only two phyla were mai.ly responsi.le for starch degradati.n （Spi.ochaetes at the di.uti.n rate of 0.08 d-1 and Fi.mi.utes at other di.uti.n rates）, di.ferent bacteri.l genera were i.enti.i.d at di.ferent di.uti.n rates. Wi.h the excepti.n of Archaea i. the glucose-fed chemostat, the band patterns revealed by denaturi.g gradi.nt gel electrophoresi. （DGGE） of the mi.robi.l communi.i.s i. the two chemostats di.played marked changes duri.g long-term operati.n at a constant di.uti.n rate. The bacteri.l communi.y changed wi.h changes i. the di.uti.n rate, and was errati. duri.g long- term operati.n i. both glucose-fed and starch-fed chemo- stats.

＜正＞i.ternati.nal Conservati.n Worki.g Holi.ays （i.WH）, whi.h were carri.d out i. cooperati.n wi.h the Bri.i.h Trust for Conservati.n Volunteers （BTCV）, were held ni.e ti.es between 1997 and 2005 i. Kurogi.cho, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. They were i.vesti.ated i. thi. study. Fi.stly, questi.nnai.e surveys were conducted among the Japanese parti.i.ants to evaluate the acti.i.i.s done duri.g the i.WHs. Secondly, the number of repeat volunteers from previ.us years and the number of staff wi.h thei. assi.ned responsi.i.i.i.s were analyzed. Fi.ally, changes i. the BTCV’s i.ternati.nal strategy as a result of havi.g launched the Conservati.n Volunteers Alli.nce Accredi.ati.n Program are descri.ed. The purpose of thi. i.vesti.ati.n i. to clari.y vari.us problems related to the i.WHs and to demonstrate the necessi.y of commenci.g leadershi. trai.i.g and of establi.hi.g self-suffi.i.nt regi.nal organi.ati.ns to overcome these problems. The number of vali. responses to the questi.nnai.e survey was 207 whi.h represents 80.9% of the total number of returned questi.nnai.es. The hi.hest response to the questi.n regardi.g acti.i.i.s was "i.teracti.n wi.h other people", although the hi.hest reason gi.en for parti.i.ati.n was "Do actual envi.onmental conservati.n work". i. i. conjectured that the safe and pleasant management not only enabled conservati.n tasks, but also fostered communi.ati.n. Regardi.g the repeats status of volunteers, between 80 to 90% of the parti.i.ants i.tended to parti.i.ate i. the i.WH program agai., whi.e 10% were i.terested i. bei.g i.volved i. project management. The actual number of repeat volunteers i.creased each year from 1998 to 2005. The re-parti.i.ati.n rate was approxi.ately 10% and the proporti.n of return volunteers who returned as staff （as opposed to a normal parti.i.ants） was approxi.ately 50%. Effect of Crop Root on Soi. Water Retenti.i.y and Movement

The objecti.e of thi. study was to clari.y the effect of crop root on soi. water retenti.i.y and movement to i.prove the crop growth envi.onment and i.ri.ati.n effi.i.ncy. To si.ulate soi. water movement consi.eri.g the crop root effect on the physi.al properti.s of soi., a numeri.al model descri.i.g the soi. water and heat transfers was i.troduced. Culti.ati.n experi.ents were conducted to clari.y the effect of the crop root on soi. water retenti.i.y and veri.y the accuracy of the numeri.al model. The relati.nshi. between soi. water retenti.i.y and the root content of soi. samples was clari.i.d by soi. water retenti.n curves. The soi. water content di.played a hi.h value wi.h i.creasi.g crop root content i. the hi.h volumetri. water content zone. The experi.ental results i.di.ated that the saturated water content i.creased wi.h the crop root content because of the porosi.y formed by the crop root. The di.ferences of the soi. water retenti.i.y became smaller when the value of the matri. potenti.l was over pF 1.5. To veri.y the accuracy of the numeri.al model, an observati.n usi.g acryli. sli. pot was also conduced. The temporal and spati.l changes of the volumetri. water content and soi. temperature were measured. Soi. water and heat transfers, whi.h consi.ered the effect of the crop root on the soi. water retenti.i.y clari.i.d by the soi. water retenti.n curves, were si.ulated. Si.ulated volumetri. water content and temperature of soi. agreed wi.h observed data. Thi. i.di.ated that the numeri.al model used to si.ulate the soi. water and heat transfer consi.eri.g the crop root effect on soi. water retenti.i.y was sati.factory. Usi.g thi. model, spati.l and temporal changes of soi. water content were si.ulated. The soi. water condi.i.n of the root zone was relati.ely hi.h compared wi.h the i.i.i.l condi.i.ns.
