Chronic activation of microglial cells endangers neuronal survival through the release of various proinflammatory and neurotoxic factors. The root of Paeonia lactiflora Pall has been considered useful for the treatment of various disorders in traditional oriental medicine. Paeonol, found in the root of Paeonia lactiflora Pall, has a wide range of pharmacological functions, including anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective activities. The objective of this study was to examine the efficacy of paeonol in the repression of inflammation-induced neurotoxicity and microglial cell activation. Organotypic hippocampal slice cultures and primary microglial cells from rat brain were stimulated with bacterial lipopolysaccharide. Paeonol pretreatment was performed for 30 minutes prior to lipopolysaccharide addition. Cell viability and nitrite （the production of nitric oxide）, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-lbeta products were measured after lipopolysaccharide treatment. In organotypic hippocampal slice cultures, paeonol blocked lipopolysaccharide-related hippocampal cell death and inhibited the release of nitrite and interleukin-lbeta. Paeonol was effective in inhibiting nitric oxide release from primary microglial cells. It also reduced the lipopolysaccharide-stimulated release of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and intefleukin-1β from microglial cells. Paeonol possesses neuroprotective activity in a model of inflammation-induced neurotoxicity and reduces the release of neurotoxic and proinflammatory factors in activated microglial cells.

＜正＞Objective Arterial stiffness is an important, independent determinant of cardiovascular risk. Pulse wave velocity （PWV） has been used as a valuable index of arterial stiffness and as a surrogate marker for atherosclerosis. The Framingham risk score was developed using categorized risk factors to predict the 10 - year absolute risk of developing coronary heart disease （CHD）. This algorithm is established using recommended guidelines for blood pressure, total cholesterol, and high - density lipoprotein cholesterol in addition to age, smoking history and history of diabetes. Tongxinluo（TXL） has been shown to have anti - hyperlipidemic activity and anti - atherogenic effects. To determine its efficacy and safety, we examined whether TXL improves PWV, ABI, Framingham score, blood pressure, and lipid profile in high risk group of cardiovascular diseases. Methods 49 subjects with the high risk of cardiovascular diseases were recruited. Subjects were administered TXL with the dose of 1110mg three times a day for 8 weeks. baPWV, ABI, Framingham risk score, Blood pressure and serum lipid profile were assessed at baseline and after 4 and 8weeks. Results Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglyceride, total lipid and phospolipid significantly decreased after 4 weeks of medication. Total cholesterol, total lipid and phospolipid significantly decreased after 8 weeks of medication. There were no significant changes in Framingham risk scores, ABI, PWV and blood pressure. On safety assessment, there were no adverse effects, hepatic or renal toxicity. Conclusion We suggest that TXL is a safe and useful herbal medicine for hyperlipidemia and as for anti - atherognic effects, further research would be necessary.

Pancreatic cancer is a challenging disease with an increasing incidence and extremely poor *** clinical outcomes of pancreatic cancer depend on tumor biology,responses to treatments,and malnutrition or *** represents a severe catabolic condition defined by the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength and affects as much as 70%of malnourished pancreatic cancer *** lumbar skeletal muscle index,defined as the total abdominal muscle area at the L3 vertebral level adjusted by the square of the height,is widely used for assessing sarcopenia in patients with pancreatic *** studies have suggested that sarcopenia may be a risk factor for perioperative complications and decreased recurrence-free or overall survival in patients with pancreatic cancer undergoing *** could also intensify chemotherapyinduced toxicities and worsen the quality of life and survival in the neoadjuvant or palliative chemotherapy ***,not only at the time of diagnosis but also during treatment,decreases survival in patients with pancreatic ***,multimodal interventions may improve sarcopenia and clinical outcomes;however,no study has reported positive *** prospective studies are needed to confirm the prognostic role of sarcopenia and the effects of multimodal interventions in patients with pancreatic cancer.

Conventional synthetic aperture radar(SAR)interferometry(InSAR)has been successfully used to precisely measure surface deformation in the line-of-sight(LOS)direction,while multiple-aperture SAR interferometry(MAI)has provided precise surface deformation in the along-track(AT)*** of the InSAR and MAI methods enables precise measurement of the two-dimensional(2D)deformation from an interferometric pair;recently,the integration of ascending and descending pairs has allowed the observation of precise three-dimensional(3D)*** 3D deformation measurement has been applied to better understand geological events such as earthquakes and volcanic *** surface deformation related to the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake was large and complex near the fault line;hence,precise 3D deformation retrieval had not yet been *** objectives of this study were to①perform a feasibility test of precise 3D deformation retrieval in large and complex deformation areas through the integration of offset-based unwrapped and improved multiple-aperture SAR interferograms and②observe the 3D deformation field related to the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake,even near the fault *** ascending pairs and one descending the Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2(ALOS-2)Phased Array-type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2(PALSAR-2)pair were used for the 3D deformation *** in situ Global Positioning System(GPS)measurements were used to validate the 3D deformation measurement *** achieved accuracy was approximately 2.96,3.75,and 2.86 cm in the east,north,and up directions,*** results show the feasibility of precise 3D deformation measured through the integration of the improved methods,even in a case of large and complex deformation.

The recently developed technologies that allow the analysis of each single omics have provided an unbiased insight into ongoing disease ***,it remains challenging to specify the study design for the subsequent integration strategies that can associate sepsis pathophysiology and clinical ***,we conducted a time-dependent multi-omics integration(TDMI)in a sepsis-associated liver dysfunction(SALD)*** successfully deduced the relation of the Toll-like receptor 4(TLR4)pathway with *** TLR4 is a critical factor in sepsis progression,it is not specified in single-omics analyses but only in the TDMI *** finding indicates that the TDMI-based approach is more advantageous than single-omics analyses in terms of exploring the underlying pathophysiological mechanism of ***,TDMI-based approach can be an ideal paradigm for insightful biological interpretations of multi-omics datasets that will potentially reveal novel insights into basic biology,health,and diseases,thus allowing the identification of promising candidates for therapeutic strategies.

Hepatic hemangiomas need to be treated surgically in cases where they are accompanied with symptoms, have a risk of rupture, or are hardly distinguishable from malignancy. The present authors conducted embolization of the right hepatic artery one day before an operation for a huge hemangioma accompanied with symptoms and confirmed a decrease in its size. The authors performed a right trisegmentectomy through a J-shape incision, using a thoracoabdominal approach, and safely removed a giant hemangioma of 32.0 cm × 26.5 cm × 8.0 cm in size and 2300 g in weight. Even for inexperienced surgeons, a J-shape incision with a thoracoabdominal approach is considered a safe and useful method when right-side hepatectomy is required for a large mass in the right liver.
