Pyunkang-hwan (Pyunkang-Tang) ameliorates air pollutant-induced inflammatory hypersecretion of airway mucus and bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis in rats

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of Pyunkanghwan(Pyunkang-tang) extract(PGT) on secretion of airway mucin in an experimental animal model involving hyperplasia of goblet cells and mucus hypersecretion, and to test its effects on bleomycin(BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis in ***: The protective activity of orally administered PGT was assessed in two rat pulmonary disease models. Effects on hypersecretion of pulmonary mucin in sulfur dioxide(SO_2)-induced bronchitis in rats were assessed by quantifying the amount of mucus secreted and examining histopathology in the tracheal epithelium. In a rat model for BLMinduced pulmonary fibrosis, toxicity to the pulmonary system was examined by measuring levels of malondialdehyde and hydroxyproline,indicators of lipid peroxides and collagen,respectively, in lung tissue 28 days post-BLM treatment. Serial sections of lung tissue were stained with Masson trichrome to visualize collagen deposition. Effects of PGT on collagen synthesis were also assessed in vitro, in a cell culture ***: PGT inhibited mucin secretion and normalized SO_2-induced increased muco- substances in goblet cells. In the BLM- induced model,PGT decreased the characteristic histopathological features of lung fibrosis and inhibited fibrotic lesions, as indicated by decreased hydroxyproline content. PGT also inhibited the BLM-induced increase in malondialdehyde levels, demonstrating its protective effect against lipid peroxidation in cell membranes of the lung. In MLg 2908 mouse lung fibroblast cells, PGT decreased transforming growth factor(TGF)-β-stimulated type I collagen ***: PGT can inhibit both hypersecretion of airway mucins and pulmonary fibrosis.

Low-Programmable-Voltage Nonvolatile Memory Devices Based on Omega-shaped Gate Organic Ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) Field Effect Transistors Using p-type Silicon Nanowire Channels

A facile approach was demonstrated for fabricating high-performance nonvolatile memory devices based on ferroelectric-gate field effect transistors using a p-type Si nanowire coated with omega-shaped gate organic ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene)(P(VDF-Tr FE)). We overcame the interfacial layer problem by incorporating P(VDF-Tr FE) as a ferroelectric gate using a low-temperature fabrication process. Our memory devices exhibited excellent memory characteristics with a low programming voltage of ±5 V, a large modulation in channel conductance between ON and OFF states exceeding 105, a long retention time greater than 3 9 104 s, and a high endurance of over 105 programming cycles while maintaining an ION/IOFFratio higher than 102.

Development of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate resistance after complete viral suppression in a patient with treatment-na?ve chronic hepatitis B: A case report and review of the literature

Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate(TDF) is a potent nucleo-tide analogue that is recommended as first-line therapy for patients with chronic hepatitis B. The results of a longitudinal study of TDF treatment demonstrated no development of resistance. We observed one treatment-na?ve chronic hepatitis B(CHB) patient who developed TDF resistance after complete viral suppression during long-term TDF treatment. A 37-year-old HBe Ag-positive man received TDF 300 mg/d for 43 mo. The hepatitis B virus(HBV) DNA titer was 8 log_(10) copies/m L at baseline and became undetectable at 16 mo after treatment. However, the HBV DNA titer rebounded to 7.5 log_(10) copies/m L at 43 mo after treatment. We performed full sequencing to find mutation sites associated with virologic breakthrough. The results showed 9 mutation sites, most of which had not been well-known as mutation sites. We changed the therapy from tenofovir to entecavir with a regimen of 0.5 mg once daily. After 4 mo, the HBV DNA titer decreased to 267 copies/m L, and the liver enzyme levels were normalized.

AIM: To study the distributions and frequencies of intestinal endocrine cells in the C57BL/6 mouse with immunohistochemical method using seven types of specific antisera against chromogranin A (CGA), serotonin,somatostatin, glucagons, gastrin, cholecystokinin (CCK)-8 and human pancreatic polypeptide (hPP) after abdominal subcutaneous implantation of murine lung carcinoma (3LL).METHODS: The experimental animals were divided into two groups, one is non-implanted Sham and the other is 3LL-implanted group. Samples were collected from six regions of intestinal tract at 28th d after implantation of 3LL cells (1×105 cell/mouse).RESULTS: In this study, five types of immunoreactive (IR) cells were identified except for gastrin and hPP. The regional distributions of the intestinal endocrine cells in the 3LL-implanted group were similar to those of the non-implanted Sham. However, significant decreases of IR cells were detected in 3LL-implanted group compared to those of non-implanted Sham. CGA- and serotonin-IR cells significantly decreased in 3LL-implanted groups compared to that of non-implanted Sham. Somatostatin-IR cells in the jejunum and ileum and CCK-8-IR cells in the jejunum of 3LL-implanted groups significantly decreased compared to that of non-implanted Sham. In addition,glucagon-IR cells were restricted to the ileum and colon of non-implanted ***: Implantation of tumor cell mass (3LL)induced severe quantifiable changes of intestinal endocrine cell density and the abnormality in density of intestinal endocrine cells may contribute to the development of gastrointestinal symptoms such as anorexia and indigestion, frequently encountered in patients with cancer.

The determinant of performance of cross-border M＆As in China： A comparative study between overseas Sino and Anglo firms

This study examines the factors that affect the performance of foreign acquiring firms in Chinese M＆As （mergers and acquisitions） market. Comparing between overseas Sino-Group and Anglo-Group, this study found that familiarity and location were the most important factors influencing performance of M＆A transactions in China. It also found that unrelated M＆A deals should be merged with familiarity for gaining positive acquisition performance. The total sample used in this study was 3,442 cases from October 1980 to March 2005. Because this period included all deals of M＆As after the opening of Chinese market in China. The authors＇ finding provided a more universal explanation in the cross-border M＆As in China.

Changes of the gastric endocrine cells in the C57BL/6 mouse after implantation of murine lung carcinoma: An immunohistochemical quantitative study

AIM: The regional distributions and relative frequencies of some gastric endocrine cells of C57BL/6 mice were studied by immunohistochemical method using seven types of specific antisera against chromogranin A (CGA), serotonin, somatostatin, gastrin, cholecystokinin (CCK)-8, glucagon and human pancreatic polypeptide (HPP) after subcutaneous implantation of murine lung carcinoma (3LL) cells. METHODS: The experimental animals were divided into two groups, one is non-implanted sham and the other is 3LL-implanted group. Samples were collected from the two regions of stomach (fundus and pylorus) at 28 d after implantation of 3LL cells (1x105 cell/mouse). RESULTS: In this study, all the seven types of immunoreactive (IR) cells were identified except for HPP. Most of these IR cells in the gastric portion were generally spherical or spindle in shape (open-type cell) while cells showing round in shape (closed-type cell) were found occasionally. The regional distributions of gastric endocrine cells in the 3LL-implanted group were similar to those of non-implanted sham. However, significant decreases of some types of IR cells were detected in 3LL-implanted group compared to those of non-implanted sham. In addition, the IR cells showing degranulation were numerously detected in 3LL-implanted group. CGA-, serotonin- and somatostatin-IR cells in the fundus and pylorus regions, and gastrin-IR cells in the pylorus regions of 3LL-implanted groups significantly decreased compared to those of non-implanted sham. However, no changes on frequencies of CCK-8- and glucagon-IR cells were demonstrated between 3LL-implanted and non-implanted groups. CONCLUSION: Endocrine cells are the anatomical units responsible for the production of gut hormones, and the change in their density would reflect a change in the capacity of producing these hormones. Twisted bilayer graphene(tBLG)has received substantial attention in various research fields due to its unconventional physical properties originating from Moire *** electronic band structure in tBLG modified by interlayer interactions enables the emergence of low-energy van Hove singularities in the density of states,allowing the observation of intriguing features such as increased optical conductivity and photocurrent at visible or near-infrared ***,we show that the third-order optical nonlinearity can be considerably modified depending on the stacking angle in *** third-harmonic generation(THG)efficiency is found to significantly increase when the energy gap at the van Hove singularity matches the three-photon resonance of incident *** study on electrically tuneable optical nonlinearity reveals that the gate-controlled THG enhancement varies with the twist angle in tBLG,resulting in a THG enhanced up to 60 times compared to neutral monolayer *** results prove that the twist angle opens up a new way to control and increase the optical *** tBLG,,suggesting rotation-induced tuneable nonlinear optics in stacked two-dimensional material systems.

Microalgae are one of the promising feedstocks for biorefinery,contributing significantly to net-zero emissions through carbon capture and ***,the disposal of microalgal byproducts from the manufacturing process causes additional environmental pollution,thus,a new application strategy is *** this study,the Tetraselmis suecica byproduct from the carotenoid extraction process was carbonized and converted into *** converted biochar was proved to be nitrogen-doped biochar(NDB),up to 4.69%,with a specific surface area of 206.59m^(2)/g andwas used as an electrode for a *** NDB electrode(NDB-E)in half-cell showed a maximum specific capacitance of 191 F/*** a full-cell test,the NDB-E exhibited a high energy density of 7.396 Wh/kg and a high-power density of 18,100 W/kg,and maintained specific capacity of 95.5%after charge and discharge of 10,000 *** conclusion,our study demonstrated that the carotenoid-extracted microalgal byproducts are a useful resource for the supercapacitor *** approach is the first to convert *** into active materials for supercapacitors.

Ru/NiMnB spherical cluster pillar for highly proficient green hydrogen electrocatalyst at high current density

Advanced OER/HER electrocatalytic alternatives are crucial for the wide adaptation of green hydrogen ***,Ru/NiMnB spherical cluster pillar(SCP),denoted as Ru/NiMnB,is synthesized using a combination of electro-deposition and hydrothermal *** investigation of Ru doping in the NiMnB matrix revealed significant improvements in electrocatalytic *** Ru/NiMnB SCPs demonstrate superior OER/HER activity with low overpotentials of 150 and 103 mV at 50mA/cm^(2)in 1 M KOH,making them highly competitive with state-of-the-art ***,the Ru/NiMnB SCPs exhibit a low 2-E cell voltage of 2.80 V at ultra-high current density of 2,000 m A/cm^(2)in 1 M KOH,outperforming the standard benchmark electrodes of RuO_(2)||Pt/C,thereby positioning Ru/NiMnB as one of the best bifunctional *** SCPs exhibit exceptional high-current characteristics,stability and corrosion resistance,as evidenced by continuous operation at 1,000 mA/cm^(2)high-current density for over 150 h in 6 M KOH at elevated temperatures under harsh industrial *** a small amount of Ru incorporation significantly enhances the electrocatalytic performances of NiMnB,attributed to increased active sites and improved intrinsic properties such as conductivity,adsorption/desorption capability and reaction ***,Ru/NiMnB SCPs present a promising bi-functional electrode concept for efficient green H_(2)production.
