Association of low muscle strength with metabolic dysfunctionassociated fatty liver disease:A nationwide study

BACKGROUND There is limited evidence regarding the association between muscle strength and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD).AIM To investigate the association between muscle strength and MAFLD in the general population in Korea.METHODS This nationwide representative cross-sectional study included 31649 individuals aged≥19 years who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2015 and 2018.Odds ratios(ORs)and 95%confidence intervals(95%CIs)for MAFLD according to sex-specific quartiles of muscle strength,defined by relative handgrip strength,were calculated using multivariable logistic regression analysis.Additionally,multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association between muscle strength and probable liver fibrosis in patients with MAFLD.RESULTS Of all the participants,29.3%had MAFLD.The prevalence of MAFLD was significantly higher in the lower muscle strength quartile groups for all participants,sexes,and age groups(Pdose-dependent manner(P for trend<0.001).These associations persisted in both sexes.An inverse association between muscle strength and the risk of MAFLD was observed in all subgroups according to age,obesity,and diabetes mellitus.In patients with MAFLD,the odds of severe liver fibrosis were higher in Q1(OR=1.83,95%CI:1.25–2.69)than in other groups(Q2–Q4).CONCLUSION Among Korean adults,low muscle strength was associated with an increased risk of MAFLD and liver fibrosis in patients with MAFLD.

Comparison of linac-based fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy and tomotherapy treatment plans for intra-cranial tumors

This study compares and analyzes stereotactic radiotherapy using tomotherapy and linac-based fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy in the treatment of intra-cranial tumors,according to some cases.In this study,linac-based fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy and tomotherapy treatment were administered to five patients diagnosed with intra-cranial cancer in which the dose of 18–20 Gy was applied on 3–5 separate occasions.The tumor dosing was decided by evaluating the inhomogeneous index （II） and conformity index （CI）.Also,the radiation-sensitive tissue was evaluated using low dose factors V1,V2,V3,V4,V5,and V10,as well as the non-irradiation ratio volume （NIV）.The values of the II for each prescription dose in the linacbased non-coplanar radiotherapy plan and tomotherapy treatment plan were （0.125±0.113） and （0.090±0.180）,respectively,and the values of the CI were （0.899±0.149） and （0.917±0.114）,respectively.The low dose areas,V1,V2,V3,V4,V5,and V10,in radiation-sensitive tissues in the linac-based non-coplanar radiotherapy plan fell into the ranges 0.3%–95.6%,0.1%–87.6%,0.1%–78.8%,38.8%–69.9%,26.6%–65.2%,and 4.2%–39.7%,respectively,and the tomotherapy treatment plan had ranges of 13.6%–100%,3.5%–100%,0.4%–94.9%,0.2%– 82.2%,0.1%–78.5%,and 0.3%–46.3%,respectively.Regarding the NIV for each organ,it is possible to obtain similar values except for the irradiation area of the brain stem.The percentages of NIV10%,NIV20%,and NIV30%for the brain stem in each patient were 15%–99.8%,33.4%–100%,and 39.8%–100%,respectively,in the fractionated stereotactic treatment plan and 44.2%–96.5%,77.7%–99.8%,and 87.8%–100%,respectively,in the tomotherapy treatment plan.In order to achieve higher-quality treatment of intra-cranial tumors,treatment plans should be tailored according to the isodose target volume,inhomogeneous index,conformity index,position of the tumor upon fractionated stereotactic radiosurgery,and radiation dosage for radiation-sensitive tissues.

dominant intermediate Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type C（DI-CMTC） is a dominantly inherited neuropathy that has been classified primarily based on motor conduction velocity tests but is now known to involve axonal and demyelination features.DI-CMTC is linked to tyrosyl-t RNA synthetase（YARS）-associated neuropathies,which are caused by E196 K and G41 R missense mutations and a single de novo deletion（153-156 del VKQV）.It is well-established that these YARS mutations induce neuronal dysfunction,morphological symptoms involving axonal degeneration,and impaired motor performance.The present study is the first to describe a novel mouse model of YARS-mutation-induced neuropathy involving a neuron-specific promoter with a deleted mitochondrial targeting sequence that inhibits the expression of YARS protein in the mitochondria.An adenovirus vector system and in vivo techniques were utilized to express YARS fusion proteins with a Flag-tag in the spinal cord,peripheral axons,and dorsal root ganglia.Following transfection of YARS-expressing viruses,the distributions of wild-type（WT） YARS and E196 K mutant proteins were compared in all expressed regions; G41 R was not expressed.The proportion of Flag/green fluorescent protein（GFP） double-positive signaling in the E196 K mutant-type mice did not significantly differ from that of WT mice in dorsal root ganglion neurons.All adenovirus genes,and even the empty vector without the YARS gene,exhibited GFP-positive signaling in the ventral horn of the spinal cord because GFP in an adenovirus vector is driven by a cytomegalovirus promoter.The present study demonstrated that anatomical differences in tissue can lead to dissimilar expressions of YARS genes.Thus,use of this novel animal model will provide data regarding distributional defects between mutant and WT genes in neurons,the DICMTC phenotype,and potential treatment approaches for this disease.

众所周知,氟利昂(CFCs)会导致平流层中臭氧的减少,加剧全球变暖。为此,许多研究团队都在致力于研究氟利昂的替代品。本文基于大豆油和菜子油制备两种生物表面活性剂,并将其分别应用于W/O和O/W型清洗剂配方。将上述生物表面活性剂与月桂醇、蓖麻油和油酸混合,研究了它们在4～60℃冷热循环的相变化,从而确定最佳的单相的形成参数。分析了生物表面活性剂的生物降解性能、清洗效率和在工业清洗过程中对基质材料(金属、聚合物)的腐蚀伤害。结果显示:大豆油甲酯(SME)在W/O和O/W配方中的生物降解度分别为94.66%和95.60%,在最佳清洗条件下对模型污染物的清洗效率分别为99%和97%;而菜籽油乙酯(CEE)在W/O和O/W配方中的生物降解度分别为94.43%和93.87%,对模型污染物的清洗效率分别为58%和15%。SME的W/O和O/W清洗剂配方、CEE的W/O和O/W清洗剂配方对生铁和聚氯乙烯的腐蚀伤害是最大的,最大腐蚀度分别为0.11/7.65、0.44/5.79、0.11/11.80、和0.12/2.84(rmg/cm^3)。SME的W/O清洗剂相较于传统工业清洗剂中所使用的三氯乙烯(TCE),可以在更短时间(<5min)内实现更高的清洗效率(99%),因此,有望在工业清洗中作为CFC的替代品使用。

The healthcare industry is in dire need of rapid microbial identification techniques for treating microbial infections.Microbial infections are a major healthcare issue worldwide,as these widespread diseases often develop into deadly symptoms.While studies have shown that an early appropriate antibiotic treatment significantly reduces the mortality of an infection,this effective treatment is difficult to practice.The main obstacle to early appropriate antibiotic treatments is the long turnaround time of the routine microbial identification,which includes time-consuming sample growth.Here,we propose a microscopy-based framework that identifies the pathogen from single to few cells.Our framework obtains and exploits the morphology of the limited sample by incorporating three-dimensional quantitative phase imaging and an artificial neural network.We demonstrate the identification of 19 bacterial species that cause bloodstream infections,achieving an accuracy of 82.5%from an individual bacterial cell or cluster.This performance,comparable to that of the gold standard mass spectroscopy under a sufficient amount of sample,underpins the effectiveness of our framework in clinical applications.Furthermore,our accuracy increases with multiple measurements,reaching 99.9%with seven different measurements of cells or clusters.We believe that our framework can serve as a beneficial advisory tool for clinicians during the initial treatment of infections.

The development of sulfur cathodes with high areal capacity and high energy density is crucial for the practical application of lithium-sulfur batteries(LSBs).LSBs can be built by employing(ultra)high-loading sulfur cathodes,which have rarely been realized due to massive passivation and shuttling.Herein,microspheres of a carbon-carbon nitride composite(C@CN)with large mesopores are fabricated via molecular cooperative assembly.Using the C@CN-based electrodes,the effects of the large mesopores and N-functional groups on the electrochemical behavior of sulfur in LSB cells are thoroughly investigated under ultrahigh sulfur-loading conditions(>15 mgS cm^(-2)).Furthermore,for high-energy-density LSBs,the C@CN powders are pelletized into a thick free-standing electrode(thickness:500^m;diameter:11 mm)via a simple briquette process;here,the total amount of energy stored by the LSB cells is 39 mWh,corresponding to a volumetric energy density of 440 Wh L-1 with an areal capacity of 24.9 and 17.5 mAh cm^(-2) at 0.47 and 4.7 mA cm^(-2),respectively(at 24mgS cm^(-2)).These results have significantly surpassed most recent records due to the synergy among the large mesopores,(poly)sulfide-philic surfaces,and thick electrodes.The developed strategy with its potential for scale-up successfully fills the gap between laboratory-scale cells and practical cells without sacrificing the high areal capacity and high energy density,providing a solid foundation for the development of practical LSBs.

Measuring nasolacrimal duct volume using computed tomography images in nasolacrimal duct obstruction patients in Korean

AIM: To investigate nasolacrimal duct(NLD) volume in Korean patients and to examine the correlation between NLD volume and obstruction. METHODS: Of patients who underwent orbital computed tomography from March 2013 to January 2016, patients diagnosed with NLD obstruction were classified into the patient group and patients without obstruction were classified into the control group. The NLD volume was measured using the Image J program, which showed the NLD in axial,coronal, and sagittal images on computed tomography. RESULTS: The average value of men's NLD volume,265.33±90.57 mm3, was significantly larger than women's,211.87±68.61 mm3(P=0.009). In the patient group, the NLD volume of the obstructed eyes, 242.49±82.93 mm3,and the non-obstructed eyes, 225.20±73.20 mm3, were significantly higher than the control group, 217.61±82.04 mm3(P<0.001, P<0.001). CONCLUSION: The NLD volume is larger in men than in women in Korean adults. If there is NLD obstruction in women, the NLD volume is larger and it is judged that inflammatory reaction caused a chronic change in the bone around the NLD and affect the measurement of NLD volume.

Risk factors for posterior synechiae of the iris after 23-gauge phacovitrectomy

AIM:To identify risk factors for the development of posterior synechiae of the iris(PSI) after 23-gauge phacovitrectomy.METHODS:A retrospective chart review was performed in consecutive Asian patients treated with 23-gauge phacovitrectomy with a 3-piece intraocular lens(IOL) or a single-piece 4 haptics IOL.RESULTS:A total of 263 eyes from 242 patients were included in the study. Postoperative PSI was identified in16(6.1%) eyes. In multivariate analysis, C3F8 gas tamponade, oil tamponade, and long operation time were significantly associated with PSI formation. There was no difference in the incidence of PSI between the groups using two different types of IOL(P =0.779).·CONLUSION: C3F8 gas or oil tamponade and long operation time increased the incidence of PSI after 23-gauge phacovitrectomy. The single-piece 4 haptics IOL,in lieu of a 3-piece IOL, may be inserted into the capsular bag with a comparable incidence of PSI.

Universal bound on sampling bosons in linear optics and its computational implications

In linear optics, photons are scattered in a network through passive optical elements including beam splitters and phase shifters, leading to many intriguing applications in physics, such as Mach–Zehnder interferometry, the Hong–Ou–Mandel effect, and tests of fundamental quantum mechanics. Here we present the fundamental limit in the transition amplitudes of bosons, applicable to all physical linear optical networks. Apart from boson sampling, this transition bound results in many other interesting applications,including behaviors of Bose–Einstein condensates(BEC) in optical networks, counterparts of Hong–Ou–Mandel effects for multiple photons, and approximating permanents of matrices. In addition,this general bound implies the existence of a polynomial-time randomized algorithm for estimating the transition amplitudes of bosons, which represents a solution to an open problem raised by Aaronson and Hance(Quantum Inf Comput 2012; 14: 541–59). Consequently, this bound implies that computational decision problems encoded in linear optics, prepared and detected in the Fock basis, can be solved efficiently by classical computers within additive errors. Furthermore, our result also leads to a classical sampling algorithm that can be applied to calculate the many-body wave functions and the S-matrix of bosonic particles.

Management of Schemes and Threat Prevention in ICS Partner Companies Security

An analysis of the recent major security incidents related to industrial control systems,revealed that most had been caused by company employees.Therefore,enterprise security management systems have been developed to focus on companies’personnel.Nonetheless,several hacking incidents,involving major companies and public/financial institutions,were actually attempted by the cooperative firms or the outsourced manpower undertaking maintenance work.Specifically,institutions that operate industrial control systems(ICSs)associated with critical national infrastructures,such as traffic or energy,have contracted several cooperative firms.Nonetheless,ICT’s importance is gradually increasing,due to outsourcing,and is the most vulnerable factor in security.This paper proposes a virtualized security management scheme for the resident cooperative firms in the industrial control infrastructure.Since such companies often cannot afford adequate investment in security,the scheme is to let an ICS company provide the virtualized system.One of its merits is the convenience of controlling a VDI server at the center.The cooperative firms were classified,based on their respective security levels,and statistics were collected throughout a four-year period for the results.This paper analyzes the policies and virtualization systems that have been applied to the security of the partner companies,which engaged in ICS security.A suitable model for ICS security was then proposed by analyzing their effects on the system efficiencies,based on the comparisons of the security inspection results obtained before and after virtualization.The proposed system is expected to contribute to industrial safety.
