Piglet gut microbial shifts early in life:causes and effects

The gut microbiome has long been known to play fundamentally important roles in the animal health and the well-being of its host. As such, the establishment and maintenance of a beneficial gut microbiota early in life is crucial in pigs, since early gut colonizers are pivotal in the establishment of permanent microbial community structures affecting the health and growth performance of pigs later in life. Emphasizing this importance of early gut colonizers, it is critical to understand the factors impacting the establishment of the piglet gut microbiome at weaning. Factors include, among others, diet, in-feed antibiotics, probiotics and prebiotic administration. The impact of these factors on establishment of the gut microbiome of piglets at weaning includes effects on piglet gut microbial diversity, structure, and succession. In this review, we thoroughly reviewed the most recent findings on the piglet gut microbiome shifts as influenced by weaning, and how these microbiome changes brought about by various factors that have been shown to affect the development of microbiota in piglets. This review will provide a general overview of recent studies that can help to facilitate the design of new strategies to modulate the gut microbiome in order to enhance gastrointestinal health, growth performance and well-being of piglets.

Ultra-small PbSe Quantum Dots Synthesis by Chemical Nucleation Controlling

Ultra-small PbSe quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized using conventional hot-injection method.A small amount of Sn was used as a nucleation promotion agent to control nucleation and growth during the QDs synthesis *** average diameter of the QDs is about 1.6 nm,of which absorption peak centers at 550 nm and photoluminescence peak centers at 750 nm under 350 nm laser excitation with power as low as 500 μ*** electron microscopy images confirm that the QDs size well matches with the calculated diameter from Brus *** match and electron energy loss spectroscopy analysis proves that Sn is not involved into the final structure of the ultra-small PbSe *** ion-exchange process was proposed for the nucleation control and ultra-small QDs *** prepared ultra-small QDs could be a promising candidate for luminescence,solar cell devices,and others.

Preparation of human decellularized peripheral nerve allograft using amphoteric detergent and nuclease

Animal studies have shown that amphoteric detergent and nuclease(DNase I and ribonuclease A) is the most reliable decellularization method of the peripheral nerve. However, the optimal combination of chemical reagents for decellularization of human nerve allograft needs further investigation. To find the optimal protocol to remove the immunogenic cellular components of the nerve tissue and preserve the basal lamina and extracellular matrix and whether the optimal protocol can be applied to larger-diameter human peripheral nerves, in this study, we decellularized the median and sural nerves from the cadavers with two different methods: nonionic and anionic detergents(Triton X-100 and sodium deoxycholate) and amphoteric detergent and nuclease(3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]-1-propanesulfonate(CHAPS), deoxyribonuclease I, and ribonuclease A). All cellular components were successfully removed from the median and sural nerves by amphoteric detergent and nuclease. Not all cellular components were removed from the median nerve by nonionic and anionic detergent. Both median and sural nerves treated with amphoteric detergent and nuclease maintained a completely intact extracellular matrix. Treatment with nonionic and anionic detergent decreased collagen content in both median and sural nerves, while the amphoteric detergent and nuclease treatment did not reduce collagen content. In addition, a contact cytotoxicity assay revealed that the nerves decellularized by amphoteric detergent and nuclease was biocompatible. Strength failure testing demonstrated that the biomechanical properties of nerves decellularized with amphoteric detergent and nuclease were comparable to those of fresh controls. Decellularization with amphoteric detergent and nuclease better remove cellular components and better preserve extracellular matrix than decellularization with nonionic and anionic detergents, even in large-diameter human peripheral nerves. The alpha-case formation reactions between Ti and investment molds （Al-2O-3,ZrSiO-4,ZrO-2,CaO stabilized ZrO-2） were evaluated in a plasma arc melting *** of thermodynamic approaches,there were distinct alpha-case *** reaction products were characterized by electron probe micro-analysis and transmission electron ***α-case generation between Ti and Al-2O-3 mold was not able to be explained by the conventionalα-case formation mechanism,which is known to be formed by the interstitials,especially oxygen dissolved from mold ***,from our experimental results and thermodynamic calculations,it was confirmed that theα-case is formed not only by an interstitial element but also by substitutional metallic elements dissolved from mold *** newly establishedα-case formation mechanism will surely lead to a variety of significant applications of theα-case controlled Ti casting.

A 75 kDa glycoprotein isolated from Cudrania tricuspidata Bureau induces colonic epithelial proliferation and ameliorates mouse colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium

Cudrania tricuspidata Bureau(CTB),a species of the Moraceae plant,has been used as a bruise recovery *** study aimed to determine whether the 75 kDa phytoglycoprotein extracted from CTB has a regulatory effect on the proliferation of human colon epithelial cells and the pathological process of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).We found that CTB glycoprotein significantly induces the proliferation of human colon epithelial HT-29 cells by activating protein kinase *** glycoprotein stimulated the phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase and transcription factor nuclear factor-κB,which are responsible for the expression of cell-cycle-related proteins(CDK2,CDK4,cyclin D1 and cyclin E)during its promotion of cell *** colitis was induced in mice by adding dextran sulfate sodium to their drinking water at a concentration of 4%(W/V)for seven *** found that CTB glycoprotein ameliorates the pathological process of IBD and lowers the disease activity index score,which was composed of body weight change,diarrhea,and hematochezia in ICR mice treated with dextran sulfate ***,we suggest that CTB glycoprotein has the ability to prevent IBD by promoting cell proliferation signaling events via the activation of PKC,JNK and NF-κB in colon epithelial cells.

Luminescence characteristics of Dy^(3+) doped Gd_2O_3-CaO-SiO_2-B_2O_3 scintillating glasses

Glasses were prepared from the compositions of 25Gd_2O_3-10 CaO-10 SiO_2-（55–x）B_2O_3-xDy_2O_3（where x is 0.0 mol.%–1.0 mol.%） by the conventional melt-quenching technique at 1400 oC. The results demonstrated the increase in the glass density with respect to the increase in the doping concentrations of Dy_2O_3. Nine absorption bands were observed. The emission spectra of the developed glass showed two strong peaks at 577 nm（~4F_（9/2）→~6H_（13/2）） and 482 nm（~4F_（9/2）→~6H_（15/2））. The highest emission intensity was observed from the developed glass prepared at 0.4 mol.% of Dy_2O_3, as the efficient energy transfer took place from Gd^（3＋） to Dy^（3＋）. From the X-ray induced optical luminescence, the emission spectra were identical to those from PL measurements, but with the highest intensity observed from the glass quenched at 0.45 mol.% of Dy_2O_3. Finally, the integral scintillation efficiency of the developed glass was determined at 27% of that of the commercially available BGO crystal.

Effect of substrate bias on microstructure and tribological performance of GLC films using hybrid HIPIMS technique

The Cr-doped hydrogen-GLC films were prepared by a hybrid magnetron sputtering system composed of a direct current magnetron sputtering (DC-MS) source of carbon and a high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) source of Cr with reactive gas of *** hydrogen-free GLC and Cr-doped GLC films were also prepared for *** influence of substrate bias on the Cr-doped hydrogen-GLC films was *** the increase of substrate bias from 100 V to 250 V,the re-sputtering of weak bonding sp2 firstly occurred and induced an increased sp3 ***,the following sp3 to sp2 transformation resulted in a decreased sp3 *** change trends of surface roughness and friction coefficient with the increased bias voltages were the same as those of sp3 *** lowest surface roughness and lowest friction coefficient corresponded to the highest sp3 with the Cr-GLC-H films at the bias voltage of-100 V.

研究了由单铜辊真空熔融纺丝技术制备的扁平带状铁基磁性非晶态合金Fe(85-x)CoxTi7Hf6B2(x=20, 30, 35,原子分数)的电学特性。这种软铁磁性非晶合金与其他含FeCo类合金一样,当Co含量达到30%附近时其饱和磁化强度会呈现最大值。尽管如此,体系中Co含量的改变并没有对这种铁基非晶合金的磁性能产生较大的影响。值得注意的是,在这种铁基非晶合金体系中Co含量的改变可导致其电学特性发生显著的转变。比如:当Co含量为20%时,其电阻温度系数为负值,表现出类似于半导体的电阻温度特性和P型半导体的电学特性;然而,当Co含量增加到30%和35%时,其电阻温度系数则转变为正值,呈现出类似一般金属导体的电阻温度特性。不仅如此,根据该非晶合金中各组成元素的电负性和电离势揭示了Co含量可调控载流子(空穴)浓度的物理机制,为新型铁基非晶合金材料的设计提供新方法。
