Bitter gourd extract improves glucose homeostasis and lipid profile via enhancing insulin signaling in the liver and skeletal muscles of diabetic rats

Objective:To investigate the modulatory effects of bitter gourd extract on the insulin signaling pathway in the liver and skeletal muscle tissues of diabetic ***:The ethanolic extract of bitter gourd was prepared and its contents of total polyphenols and flavonoids were assayed.A neonatal streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat model was established and the diabetic rats were assigned into different groups and were treated with different doses of bitter gourd extract(100,200,400,or 600 mg/kg)or with glibenclamide(0.1 mg/kg)for 30 *** blood glucose,insulin,and lipid profile were evaluated and the insulin signaling pathway in the liver and skeletal muscle of rats was *** correlations between homeostasis model assessment(HOMA)and the components of insulin signaling pathway were also ***:Different doses of bitter gourd extract significantly ameliorated fasting blood glucose level and HOMA index for insulin ***,bitter gourd extract increased serum insulin and improved disrupted serum lipid *** levels of insulin receptor substrate-1(IRS-1),p-insulin receptorβ(p-IR-β),protein kinase C(PKC),GLUT2,and GLUT4 were improved by treatment with bitter gourd *** best results were obtained with 400 mg/kg dose of the extract,the effect of which was equivalent to that of *** in the bitter gourd treated rats was negatively correlated with p-IR-β,IRS-1 and PKC in hepatic and skeletal *** was also negatively correlated with skeletal muscle ***:Bitter gourd extract improves glucose homeostasis and lipid profile in diabetic rats via enhancement of insulin secretion and ***,bitter gourd can be used as a potential pharmacological agent for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Natural Resource Governance in Unrecognized Settings: What Are Emerging Political, Legal and Fiscal Issues Affecting “Somaliland”?

Somaliland declared independence after the fall of the Central Government of Somalia in 1991. Early peace settlements and state-building efforts led to transitional government and early democratic contestations including presidential elections in a hybrid state framework. This emerging democracy in a conflict-torn region is challenged by weak accountability and power imbalances between the three government branches. Over the past few years, the current ruling party started to engage with foreign companies to carry out exploration activities in onshore blocks utilizing existing information on the distribution of natural resources of oil, and gas and to lesser extent mining. Following an informal auction of selling licenses for resource exploration among various companies, Genel Energy amongst others;Somaliland has no competent institutions in managing revenues for long-term development due to two distinctive factors: 1) absence of strong legal and political frameworks specific to governance of extractive industry;2) weak fiscal regimes across spectrum of extractive companies, the state and investors.

AIM:To analyze cases of obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct which creates a fertile environment for secondary bacterial Infection and can result in dacryocystitis,which is a constant threat to cornea and orbital soft tissue and a potential source of endophthalmitis following intraocular *** majority of obstructions of the lacrimal excretory outflow system are acquired ones occurring in adulthood and involving the distal parts of the *** obstruction may be primary/idiopathic or secondary to a wide variety of infectious,inflammatory,traumatic,mechanical,toxic or neoplastic causes mimicking idiopathic *** cases are treated by dacryocystorhinostomy(DCR).METHODS:The present study was conducted to determine the histopathologic,immunohistochemical and current microbiologic characteristics of lacrimal sac specimens in patients undergoing external ***:Non-specific lacrimal sac pathology was present in all 33 cases and 81.8%of the cases showed moderate chronic inflammation with a chronic inflammatory score(CIS)ranging between 4 and 6,whereas 12.12%showed severe inflammatory changes with a CIS of *** degree of inflammation was seen in6.06%with a CIS of *** total prevalence of grampositive,gram-negative,and culture-negative samples were 59.4%,37.5%,and 3%***:Non-specific chronic inflammation withfibrosis is indeed the most commonly reported histopathological finding in lacrimal sac wall biopsy specimens.

Can miRNA712＿3p be a promising biomarker for early diagnosis of toxoplasmosis?

Objective: To assess the role of miRNA712_3p as a specific biomarker in early detection of toxoplasmosis in plasma of mice acutely infected with Toxoplasma gondii. Methods: Real-time PCR was used to measure the level of miRNA712_3p in plasma of infected mice. Immunecompetent and immune-suppressed mice were examined, three and five days post-infection. Results: Results revealed significant up-regulation of plasma miRNA712_3p in both immunecompetent and immune-compromised groups in comparison to the control non-infected group. Additionally, an increase in the level of miRNA712_3p was noticed correspondently in the parasite density detected in liver impression smears. Conclusions: miRNA712_3p can be used as a novel biomarker for the detection of Toxoplasma gondii infection in both immunecompetent and immune-compromised host.

Spectrofluorimetric method for determination of some angiotensin II receptor antagonists

A simple, rapid, accurate and highly sensitive spectrofluorimetric method has been developed for determination of some angiotensin II receptor antagonists (AIIRA’s), namely Losartan potassium (Los-K), Irbesartan (Irb), Valsartan (Val) and Candesartan cilexetil (Cand) in pure forms as well as in their pharmaceutical dosage forms. All the variables affecting the relative fluorescence intensity (RFI) were studied and optimized. Under the optimum conditions, linear relationships with good correlation coefflcients (0.9982–0.9991) were obtained over the concentration range from 0.006 mg/mL to 1.7 mg/mL. Good accuracy and precision were successfully obtained for the analysis of tablets containing each drug alone or combined with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) without interferences from the co-formulated HCTZ or the additives commonly present in tablets.

Flavonoid chemical composition and antidiabetic potential of Brachychiton acerifolius leaves extract

Objective:To evaluate Brachychiton acerifolius leaf extracts as antidiabetic potential agent and to identify the main active constituents using bioactivity guided ***:In vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated for *** different extracts using DPPH assay and vitamin C as *** activity was then determined using STZ-induced rats treated daily with ethyl acetate and 70% ethanol leaf extracts for4 weeks at a dose of 200 g/kg body weight against gliclazide reference *** glucose,a-amylase,lipid profile,liver function enzymes and oxidative stress markers were assessed along with histopathological study for liver and pancreatic *** and structural elucidation of active compounds were made using Diaion and Sephadex followed by spectral ***:The results indicated that ethyl acetate and ethanol leaf extracts exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity compared to that of vitamin C(IC500.05,0.03 and 12 mg/m L,respectively).Both extracts showed potent anti-hyperglycemic activity evidenced by a significant decrease in serum glucose levels by 82.5% and 80.9% and a-amylase by45.2% and 53.6%,as compared with gliclazide 68% and 59.4%,*** of ethanol extract resulted in the isolation of 9 flavonoids including apigenin-7-O-arhamnosyl(1/2)-b-D-glucuronide,apigenin-7-O-b-D-glucuronide,apigenin-7-O-b-Dglucoside and ***:This study highlights the potential use of *** leaf extract enriched in flavones for the treatment of diabetes that would warrant further clinical trials investigation.

This paper derives necessary and sufficient conditions of optimality in the form of a stochastic maximum principle for relaxed and strict optimal control problems with *** problems are governed by multi-dimensional forward-backward doubly stochastic differential equations(FBDSDEs)with Poisson jumps and has firstly relaxed controls,which are measure-valued processes,and secondly,as an application,the authors allow them to have strict *** FBDSDEs with jumps are fully-coupled,the forward and backward equations work in different Euclidean spaces in general,the backward equation is Markovian,and the control problems are considered under full information or partial information in terms ofσ-algebras that provide such *** formulation of these equations as well as performance functionals are given in abstract forms to allow the possibility to cover most of the applications available in the ***,coefficients of such equations are allowed to depend on control variables.

Thermal performance of cooling strategies for asphalt pavement: A state-of-the-art review

Asphalt pavements absorb and store more heat than natural surfaces. Thus, high temperatures are emitted from conventional asphalt pavements, subsequently releasing heat into the atmosphere and contributing to the urban heat island(UHI) phenomenon. Several cool pavement strategies, including the provision of additives and materials, surface coating and layer design, have been introduced to reduce the impact of UHI. This article provides a detailed review of the thermal properties of these mitigation measures in the context of cool asphalt pavements. The literature can be divided into three segments. The first segment discusses the impact of pavements on UHI and heat transfer mechanisms in pavements. The second segment focuses on various thermo physical properties that play an important role in mitigation measures;these properties include albedo(a), emissivity(e),solar reflective index, thermal conductivity(k), specific heat capacity(Cp) and thermal diffusivity. The third segment discusses cool asphalt pavement strategies which specifically cover the ability of the pavement to absorb and reflect solar energy on the basis of the materials and treatments used. The literature reveals that cooling strategies that deal with the pavement surface are important due to its direct incident solar effect, which depends on surface colour, material, shape and roughness. By using high-albedo and high-emissivity surfaces, the pavement can store less heat and lower the surface temperature. These results can also be achieved by designing the materials and pavement layers with low thermal conductivity and high specific heat capacity to reduce thermal diffusivity and pavement temperature and thus combat the heat radiated by the asphalt pavement.

Effect of Si-addition as a grain refiner on microstructure and properties of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy

Two different Ti alloys were cast in a graphite mould using vacuum induction skull melting furnace. The first alloy was Ti-6Al-4V and the second was Ti-6Al-4V 0.5Si. Silicon as a grain refiner was added into Ti-6Al-4V alloy, and the effects of Si-addition on the microstructure and properties of the as-cast and swaged alloys were investigated. Hot swaging at 900 °C was performed on the cast samples and then two different thermal treatments were applied. The first treatment was done by heating the swaged samples at 1050 °C to produce fine lamella structure, while the second treatment was carried out at 1050 °C and then decreased the temperature to 800 °C for getting coarse lamella structure. An addition of 0.5% Si to Ti-6Al-4V alloy decreased the grain size of the as-cast sample from 627 to 337 μm. There was an increase in ultimate tensile strength of about 25 MPa for the as-cast Ti-6Al-4V 0.5Si alloy compared to Ti-6Al-4V due to the refinement effect caused by Si addition. A maximum ultimate tensile strength of 1380 MPa and a minimum corrosion rate （1.35×10 6 mm/a in Hank’s solution and 5.78×10 4 mm/a in NaCl solution） were reported for the heat treated fine lamella structure of Ti-6Al-4V 0.5Si alloy. The wear rate was decreased to about 50% by adding 0.5% Si at low sliding speeds and to about 73% at high sliding speeds.

Multidrug resistance Acinetobacter species at the intensive care unit,Aseer Central Hospital,Saudi Arabia:A one year analysis

Objective:To identify and to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of Acinetobacter baumannii(***) clinical isolates from ICU at Aseer Central ***:The study was conducted in the Intensive Care Unit,Aseer Central Hospital,Saudi Arabia over 13 months period(2014-2015).Acinetobacter species(n= 105) were isolated from various clinical *** were identified using selected phenotypic criteria and confirmed using the Vitek 2 automated *** system was used to determine the susceptibilities of 21 antimicrobial ***,isolates and drug data were analyzed using the SPSS statistical software package to determine some epidemiological and microbiological ***:Of the 105 stains,*** accounted for 49(46.67%),*** complex,19(18.09%),***/haemolyticus 32(30.47),Acinetobacter haemolyticus 4(3.81%),Acinetobater lwoffii 1(0.95%) and unidentified Acinetobater species 2(1.3%).Of the 105 Acinetobacter strains,103(98.1%) were found multidrug resistant(MDR).*** strain were 100% sensitive to colistin and 74.5% to trimethoprim + *** remaining 19 antimicrobial agents revealed low or no sensitivities:amikacin 16.3%; ampicillin 7.7%; ceftazidime 7.3%.Distribution of similar sensitivities was shown by other Acinetobacter *** number of isolates from males and females indicates no statistical variation(P=0.867) whereas age groups showed significant differences(P= 0.008) as it is clear from the high percentage of infected individuals more than 60 years followed by those aged 20 to 29 years old(19.05%).Upper respiratory tract(30.48%),lower respiratory tract(47.65%) and subcutaneous tissue(9.5%) were the main sources of Acinetobacter *** mean numbers of isolates from these specimens indicate no discrepancy between specimens(P=0.731).Conclusions:Acinetobacterspecies including *** were found MDR(98.1%) according to the current Acinetobacter *** categorization.A
