Mucosal surfaces that line the respirat.r.,gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts are the major int.r.aces between the immune system and the *** unique immunological landscape is charact.r.zed by the necessity of balancing tolerance to commensal microorganisms and other innocuous exposures against protection from pathogenic t.r.ats such as *** pathogenic viruses,including herpesviruses and retroviruses,exploit this environment to establish chronic *** and regulat.r. t-cell populations,including effect.r.and resident memory t cells,play instrumental roles in mediating the transition from acute to chronic infection,where a degree of viral replication is tolerated to minimize *** antigen exposure during chronic viral infection leads to the evolution and divergence of these *** this review,we discuss advances in the understanding of mucosal t-cell immunity during chronic viral infections and how feat.r.s of t-cell responses develop in different chronic viral infections of the *** consider how insights into t-cell immunity at mucosal surfaces could inform vaccine strategies:not only to protect hosts from chronic viral infections but also to exploit viruses that can persist within mucosal surfaces as vaccine vect.r..

Palmer and rock proposed that uniform connectedness (UC) occurs prior to classical Gestalt fact.r. to define the primitive units for visual perception. Han, humphreys and Chen, how-ever, found that grouping by proximity can take place as quickly as that based on UC in a lett.r.discrimination task. the present study employed a lett.r.detection task to examine the relationship between UC and proximity grouping in 3 experiments. We showed that.r.action times to t.r.ets defined by proximity or UC were equally fast when one or two global objects were presented in the visual field. However, as the number of global objects was increased, responses were fast.r.to t.r.ets defined by UC than to t.r.ets defined by proximity. In addition, the advantage of UC over proximity was not affected by the space between global objects. the results suggest that UC was more effective than proximity in forming perceptual units under multiple object conditions. Possible reasons for this finding are discussed.

this study examined the effects of attention on forming perceptual units by proximity grouping and by uniform connectedness (UC). In Experiment 1 a row of t.r.e global lett.r. de- fined by either proximity or UC was presented at the cent.r.of the visual field. Participants were asked to identify the lett.r.in the middle of stimulus arrays while ignoring the flankers. the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) between stimulus arrays and masks varied between 180 and 500 ms. We found that.r.sponses to t.r.ets defined by proximity grouping were slower than to those defined by UC at median SOAs but there were no differences at short or long SOAs. In- congruent flankers slowed responses to t.r.ets and this flanker compatibility effect was larger for UC than for proximity-defined flankers. Experiment 2 examined the effects of spatial precueing on discrimination responses to proximity- and UC-defined t.r.ets. the advantage for t.r.ets de- fined by UC over t.r.ets defined by proximity grouping was great.r.at uncued relative to cued locations. the results suggest that the advantage for UC over proximity grouping in forming perceptual units is contingent on the stimuli not being fully attended, and that paying attention to the stimuli differentially benefits proximity grouping.

the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) of human adults is involved in at.r.buting mental states to real human agents but not to virtual artificial charact.r.. this study examined whether such differential MPFC activity can be observed in children who are more fascinated by cartoons than adults. We measured brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMrI) while 10-year-old children watched movie and cartoon clips, simulating real and virtual visual worlds, respectively. We showed neuroimaging evidence that, in contrast to adults, the MPFC of children was activated when perceiving both human agents and artificial charact.r. in coherent visual events. Our findings suggest that, around the age of 10 years, the MPFC activity in children is different from that in adults in that it can be spontaneously activated by non-human agents in a virtual visual world.

the reinforcement of premating barriers due to reduced hybrid fitness in sympatry may cause secondary sexual isolation within a species as a by-product. Consistent with this, in the fly Drosophila subquinaria, females that are sympatric with D. recens mate at very low rates not only with D. recens, but also with conspecific D. subquinaria males from allopatry. Here, we ask if these effects of re- inforcement cascade more broadly to affect sexual isolation with other closely related species. We assay reproductive isolation of these species with D. transversa and find that choosy D. subquinaria females from the region sympatric with D. recens discriminate strongly against male D. transversa, whereas D. subquinaria from the allopatric region do not. this increased sexual isolation cannot be explained by nat.r.l selection to avoid mating with this species, as they are allopatric in geographic range and we do not identify any intrinsic postzygotic isolation between D. subquinaria and D. transversa. Variation in epicuticular hydrocarbons, which are used as mating signals in D. subquinaria, follow patt.r.s of premating isolation： D. transversa and allopatric D. subquinaria are most similar to each other and differ from sympatric D. subquinaria, and those of D. recens are distinct from the other two species. We suggest that the secondary effects of reinforcement may cascade to strengthen reproductive isolation with other species that were not a t.r.et of selection. these effects may enhance the divergence that occurs in allopatry to help explain why some species are already sexually isolated upon secondary contact.
