Evaluation of redox-sensitive metals in marine surface sediments influenced by the oxygen minimum zone of the Humboldt Current System, Northern Chile

Upwelling coastal systems can be used to understand how dissolved oxygen and biological productivity control the accumulation of redox-sensitive metals in marine *** aluminium(Al),cadmium(Cd),iron(Fe),nickel(Ni),molybdenum(Mo),vanadium(V),total organic carbon(TOC),total nitrogen(TN)and total sulfur(TS)contents in surficial sediment collected from different water depths(30,70,and 120 m)in three northern Chilean bays influenced by coastal upwelling and oxygen minimum zones(OMZs)were *** component analysis(PCA),cluster analysis,and Spearman’s rank correlation were used to identify the mechanisms responsible for the redox-sensitive metal *** content of redox-sensitive metals and organic components in sediment increased with increasing water column depth,whereas lithogenic metals *** the Mejillones del Sur and Caldera bays,the enrichment factors of the redox-sensitive metals showed enrichment for all metals with *** Cd and V enrichments are mainly the product of biogenic flow to the seabed,and the Mo and Ni enrichments are due to preservation under low subsurface oxygen *** reduction is not an important mechanism in the accumulation of redox-sensitive metals in the sediment of the three *** PCA showed that the behaviors of the redox-sensitive metals and organic components reflect differences in the effects of the OMZ in sediment along the coast of northern Chile,with a more intense OMZ in Mejillones del Sur bay and weaker OMZs in Caldera and Inglesa ***,the high degree of enrichment in redox-sensitive metals in Caldera Bay can be attributed to the intense activity of the mining industry near the bay,a situation that produces geochemical behavior similar to that observed in Mejillones del Sur Bay.

Hepatic encephalopathy(HE) remains a diagnosis of exclusion due to the lack of specific signs and symptoms. Refractory HE is an uncommon but serious condition that requires the search of hidden precipitating events(i.e.,portosystemic shunt) and alternative diagnosis. Hypothyroidism shares clinical manifestations with HE and is usually considered within the differential diagnosis of HE. Here,we describe a patient with refractory HE who presented a large portosystemic shunt and post-ablative hypothyroidism. Her cognitive impairment,hyperammonaemia,electroencephalograph alterations,impaired neuropsychological performance,and magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy disturbances were highly suggestive of HE,paralleled the course of hypothyroidism and normalized after thyroid hormone replacement. There was no need for intervention over the portosystemic shunt. The case findings support that hypothyroidism may precipitate HE in cirrhotic patients by inducing hyperammonaemia and/or enhancing ammonia brain toxicity. This case led us to consider hypothyroidism not only in the differential diagnosis but also as a precipitating factor of HE.

Applicability of an eddy covariance system based on a close-path quantum cascade laser spectrometer for measuring nitrous oxide fluxes from subtropical vegetable fields

The soil of subtropical vegetable fields is an important source of the atmospheric greenhouse gas nitrous oxide（N2O）. In a field study in subtropical China, the authors used an eddy covariance（EC）system based on a close-path quantum cascade laser（QCL） spectrometer to measure N2O fluxes from a vegetable field. during the experimental period from 9 October 2014 to 18 February 2015,the observed half-hourly N2O fluxes ranged from.10.7 to 1077.4 μg N m^-2h^-1, with a mean value of99.3 μg N m^-2h^-1. The detection limit（95% confidence level） of the EC system for half-hourly fluxes was estimated at 18.5 μg N m^-2h^-1, i.e. smaller than 97.5% of all measured fluxes, and within the range of the lower limit of reported N2O emissions from subtropical vegetable fields. The random uncertainties in the half-hourly fluxes were estimated at 60% on average, of which 62% was due to stochastic variations caused by turbulence and 38% by instrumental noise. The flux systematic uncertainties were estimated at.18% on average, mainly due to the spectral attenuation; however,this negative bias had already been corrected for by calculating half-hourly fluxes. In conclusion,the close-path QCL-based EC technique is capable of measuring the N2O fluxes from the subtropical vegetable fields of China with high reliability and accuracy.

Aims In plants,resource allocation to growth and reproduction may depart from trade-off expectations if(i)investment in growth and reproduction relies on different resource pools,(ii)allocation to reproduction is dependent upon reaching some growth threshold or(iii)reproduction is developmentally linked to growth,both functions relying on the same resource *** examined the effects of enhanced resource level on patterns of resource allocation to growth and reproduction in holm oak(Quercus ilex ***),a Mediterranean evergreen *** In the experimental year(2003),we manipulated the amount of soil nutrients in autumn(to increase nutrient uptake during shoot elongation in the following spring)and soil water in summer(to increase water uptake during acorn growth).Indicators of growth and male and female reproduction were estimated in the preexperimental(2002),experimental(2003)and post-experimental(2004)*** Findings Fertilized trees produced significantly longer shoots,but the number of female flowers per shoot was not affected by *** production of male catkins was also enhanced by *** did not affect the production of female flowers or abortion *** and female reproduction showed no consistent relationship in untreated trees,but resource addition elicited a growth-female reproduction trade-off in the experimental *** sign of this significant relationship changed in the post-experimental year,indicating the existence of lagged effects of resource manipulation on acorn ***,patterns of allocation to growth and reproduction varied as a function of sex,resource availability and year,a result consistent with extreme allocational plasticity in holm oak.

AIM:The pathogenesis of hypogonadism in liver cirrhosis is not well *** results from our laboratory showed that IGF-1 deficiency might play a pathogenetic role in hypogonadism of *** administration of IGF-1 for a short period of time reverted the testicular atrophy associated with advanced experimental cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to establish the historical progression of the described alterations in the testes, explore testicular morphology,histopathology,cellular proliferation,integrity of testicular barrier and hypophyso- gonadal axis in rats with no ascitic cirrhosis. METHOdS:Male Wistar rats with histologically-proven cirrhosis induced with carbon tetrachloride(CCI_4)for 11 wk, were allocated into two groups(n=12,each)to receive recombinant IGF-1(2 μg/100 gd,sc)for two weeks or *** rats receiving vehicle were used as control group(n=12). RESULTS:Compared to controls,rats with compensated cirrhosis showed a normal testicular size and weight and very few histopathological testicular abnormalities. However,these animals showed a significant diminution of cellular proliferation and a reduction of testicular transferrin *** addition,pituitary-gonadal axis was altered,with significant higher levels of FSH(Pd increased levels of LH in untreated cirrhotic ***,IGF-1 treatment normalized testicular transferrin expression and cellular proliferation and reduced serum levels of LH(P=ns vs controls,and Pd cirrhotic group). CONCLUSION:The testicular barrier is altered from an early stage of cirrhosis,shown by a reduction of transferrin expression in Sertoli cells,a diminished cellular proliferation and an altered gonadal *** treatment with IGF-1 could be also useful in this initial stage of testicular disorder associated with compensated cirrhosis.

Adult stem cells,especially from bone marrow,have a tremendous therapeutic potential,and its application in regenerative medicine has been increasingly studied [1,2].It is well known that three-dimensional (3d)cell culture matrix promotes many biological relevant functions not observed in two-dimensional (2d) monolayer cell culture [3]and therefore,engineering 3d cell culture platforms to mimic the native in vivo biological systems represents a realistic approach for studies of bone marrow stem cells. High-throughput microfluidics constitutes a promising technology to generate hydrogel three dimensional constructs [4,5],however, its application to host adult stem cells remains still a challenge.

目的在重症监护病房(Intensive Care Unit,ICU),护士难免会遇到需要限制治疗努力(limiting therapeutic effort,LTE)的患者,尽管多数护十还缺乏为这些临终患者及其家庭提供支持的准备。本综述旨在描述ICU护士在LTE中需要具备的能力。方法对2010年—2023年发表的文献进行综述。系统检索了5个数据库:Medline、Wiley Online Library SciELO、Sciencedirect和Web of Science。使用关键评估项目工具西班牙语版(Critical Appraisal Skills Programme in Spanish,CASPe)作为评判性阅读工具。使用牛津循证医学中心(Center for Evidence-Based Medicine,CEBM)评估工具确定证据级别和推荐强度。结果共纳入25篇文献。ICU护士LTE护理的能力包括对患者的直接护理、以家庭为中心的护理以及护士在团队中的作用。该综述确定了3个类别的能力:作为患者、家庭与跨学科团队之间维护者的能力,在LTE方面的决策能力,在患者生命末期治疗和护理干预的能力。结论 ICU护十在LTE方面需要具备相应的能力,这对患者的生活质量、死亡尊严以及患者家庭应对悲伤的全面支持至关重要。
